Pierre Boulez, Georges Aperghis, Helmut Lachenmann, and Giuseppe Sinopoli: these names represent the highlights of the 59th Festival. There will be many composers from the newer generations on the programme, often unfamiliar to Italian audiences but frequently performed on international stages: Performing their works will be major European ensembles such as Klangforum Wien, Ensemble Recherche, Musikfabrik; recent companies such as the European Contemporary Orchestra and the Studio for New Music Moscow; the original wind quintet Slowind, the Lemanic Modern Ensemble, the Leonis quartet and the trio entitled to Josef Suk; and finally extraordinary performers such as the piano duo composed of the two Turkish sisters Ufuk and Bahar Dördüncü, and cellist Francesco Dillon with Emanuele Torquati on the piano. And two more pianists: Giuseppe Albanese, with a linear survey of Hungarian piano music from Liszt to Bartòk to Ligeti; and David Greilsammer, who relies on his virtuosity to activate a short-circuit between the arduous sonatas of Scarlatti and the new timbres of Cage s prepared keyboard.

The majority of the more than 120 paintings, sketches, drawings, photographs, and documents, some never before exhibited, are loaned by the Charles Pollock Archives, Paris, thanks to the artist s widow and daughter, Sylvia Winter Pollock and Francesca Pollock. A small number of works by Jackson Pollock, Thomas Hart Benton and a unique painting by Sanford Pollock complement Charles s early years in New York and Washington, shedding light on what amounted to a family enterprise studying to be artists of the Pollock family before World War II. Together with this exhibition, through November 16, 2015 the museum presents Jackson Pollock s Mural : Energy Made Visible. Curated by David Anfam, Senior Consulting Curator, Clyfford Still Museum, Denver, and a preeminent authority on Abstract Expressionism, this touring show focuses on Jackson Pollock s Mural (1943, University of Iowa Museum of Art, Iowa City), following its 18-month campaign of conservation and cleaning at the Getty Conservation Institute, Los Angeles. The immensely dynamic Mural is the largest painting Pollock created and it has exerted a seismic impact on American art down to the present day. Commissioned in the summer of 1943 by Peggy Guggenheim for her New York townhouse, Mural established a new sense of scale and audacity for the Abstract Expressionist movement, anticipating the classic poured abstractions that Pollock would begin four years later. Setting Mural into context, the selection includes Pollock s newly-restored Alchemy, as well as works by the artist s wife Lee Krasner, David Smith and Robert Motherwell. Crucially, it also sheds new light on Pollock s relationship to such photographers of action and energy as Herbert Matter, Barbara Morgan, Aaron Siskind and Gjon Mili. Furthermore, from October 3, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection presents V. S. Gaitonde: Painting as Process, Painting as Life, the first retrospective exhibition dedicated to the work of celebrated Indian modern painter Vasudeo Santu Gaitonde ( ). As current scholarship revisits traditions of mid-20thcentury modern art outside of the Euro-American paradigm, Gaitonde s work presents an unparalleled opportunity to explore Indian modern art as it played out in the metropolitan centers of Bombay (now Mumbai) and New Delhi from the late 1940s through the end of the 20th century. Born in Nagpur, India, Gaitonde was an artist of singular stature, known to fellow artists and intellectuals, as well as to later generations of students and admirers, as a man of uncompromising artistic integrity of spirit and purpose. Gaitonde began developing a nonobjective style in the late 1950s, employing palette knives and paint rollers and often using torn pieces of newspaper to create floating, abstract forms. This move towards non-objectivity dovetails with the history of the Guggenheim Foundation and the global circulation of art and ideas. Above, top right: V. S. 13 Glass and Laces: treasures in islands museums Murano and Burano islands, art and ancient traditions 13 Murano Glass Museum. New grounfloor set-up: detail of ex-conterie with sculptures of Luciano Vistosi Ph.: Andrea Marin During the summer season, a visit to the islands of the Lagoon offers a pleasant escape from the usual Venetian tours and an unforgettable experience at the same time. Among the most popular and fascinating itineraries are the islands of Murano and Burano with their museums, treasuries of ancient traditions. Reopened in February after a radical restyling, the Museo del Vetro (Glass Museum), founded in 1861 with the backing of Abbot Antonio Zanetti, has been completely renovated and the exhibition spaces and layout expanded. With an approach that is far clearer and more Lace Museum, Burano. New firstfloor set-up. linear, visitors can now learn about the key moments in the fascinating and ancient adventure that has made Murano glass famous worldwide. The layout now presents a chronological journey through a series of masterpieces laying bare the secrets of this extraordinary art-form: from its Roman origins between the first and fourth centuries AD to the golden age of the 14th to 17th centuries, which includes the invention of crystalline glass by Angelo Barovier ( ), and continues into the 18th and 19th centuries, with chalcedony and milk glass and the invention of murrine, beads and other innovative recent experiences in design and contemporary glass. This unmissable itinerary is rounded off with a visit to the newly-renovated spaces of the former Conterie, the old glass beads factory, turned into an intriguing white cube for hosting temporary exhibitions and events. Currently, it contains a tribute to the Muranese artist Luciano Vistosi, a leading exponent of artistic research associated with the design of glass, with a selection of sinuous glass sculptures, on display until August 30. One of the most refined and ancestral traditional artistic expressions in Venice is that of lace, which has made famous another island in the Lagoon: the beautiful and colourful Burano. Over one hundred valuable pieces from the school s rich collection are on display, including pieces of great value and important examples of Venetian production from the origins to the present day, offering an opportunity to discover how this noble and ancient art, born from the union of poor materials such as needle and thread, continues to this day with the creation of masterpieces, inspiring artists who present their own creations here from time to time in a continuous dialogue between antique and contemporary. 14 14 VENICE Venice Garden ORIAGO In the 16th and 17th centuries the Venetian aristocracy built aorun 60 splendid country houses here, like the Palladian Villa Malcontenta and the Villa Pisani, Villa Venier and the spectacular residences around the river that connect Padua and Venice Villa Franceschi, a true jewel. the 16th century home of a family of jewellers now stands, wonderfully restored and reborn, hosts charming suites boasting artisanal silk fabrics, splendid Rezzonico Murano glass chandeliers, stone fireplaces and original Venetian marble grit floors. It s an aristocratic setting infused with the familiarity Villa Widmann MIRA Villa Franceschi Villa Gradenigo Villa Foscari - Malcontenta Villa Foscarini Rossi is one of the many jewels to visit along the Riviera del Brenta. Very close to Stra city centre, it is a XVII century architectural complex formed by two buildings: the Foresteria (guesthouse) which, after an accurate restoration, hosts various events, and the Villa Padronale, where the Museo Rossimoda della Calzatura (Rossimoda Museum of the Shoe) is located. In the Foresteria, the Salone degli Affreschi (frescoes hall) decorated by De Bruni in 1652 stands out and it is here that cocktails, dinners, and meetings are hosted, extending up to the front park and especially to the wide portico. The Museum represents the cultural history of the shoe industry tradition of the Riviera del Brenta: 1700 million of women s shoes are here exhibited, created since 1947 for the most prestigious international fashion designers (Céline, Dior, DOLO Villa Pisani VENICE LAGOON Barchessa Valmarana STRA NOVENTA PADOVANA Villa Giovanelli N A V I G L I O B R E N T A PADOVA Fendi, Givenchy, Porsche, Ungaro, YSL etc.). The small but precious collection of Venetian shoes from 1700 is very interesting too. of a countryside home. The other part of the hotel occupies the old colonnades where coaches and carts were kept. The restaurant is also here. Inspired by Remigio Dal Corso, the host and a great food lover, chefs Gianluca Vulcano and Umberto Giraldo use the finest products from the countryside and lagoon. The vegetables are from the villa s organic garden or the sandy, briny soil of the Island of Sant Erasmo. The seafood, always fresh, is caught in the lagoon, and is always prepared with great respect for its natural taste and appeal. Just try the spider crab to see how true this is, or the local moeche crabs, caught after shedding their shell, and fried. And the schie, small shrimp from the lagoon, enjoyed round here with the local slow-cooked white polenta. The best way to experience Villa Franceschi s discreet luxury is to stroll in the shade of the ancient trees in the historic garden and let yourself be pampered by the infinite care of the Dal Corso family. 17 EVENTS 17 The magic Regata Storica show Don t miss this year edition: September 6th The Regata Storica is the main event in the annual Voga alla Veneta rowing calendar. This unique sport has been practised in the Venetian lagoon for thousands of years and today it is particularly wellknown for the spectacular historical water pageant that precedes the race. Scores of typically 16th century-style boats with gondoliers in period costume carry the Doge, the Doge s wife and all the highest ranking Venetian officials up the Grand Canal in a brightly coloured parade. An unforgettable sight and a true reconstruction of the glorious past of one of most the powerful and influential Maritime Republics in the Mediterranean. The Regata Storica dates back centuries, probably as far back as the mid thirteenth century when the Serenissima needed to train the crews of its huge navy in the art of rowing. Today there are four races divided in terms of age and type of craft. The best known and most exciting of these is the Campioni su Gondolini race, where a series of small, sporting gondolas fly down the Grand Canal to the finishing line at the famous machina, the spectacular floating stage located in front of the Ca Foscari palace.
