This handbook should be read in conjunction with the Newcastle University Business School Postgraduate Study Guide. Together, these documents will provide you with a guide to the facilities offered to you both by the School and the wider University and are designed to complement other information provided by the University. This handbook provides an accurate picture of the programme at the time of writing, but this may be subject to minor change during the course of the academic year. 6 Newcastle University Business School: Postgraduate Handbook Executive MBA programme This section aims to provide you with some key information on your degree programme. Generic information relating to postgraduate degrees can be found on the Business School Postgraduate Blackboard Community and in the Postgraduate Study Guide. Newcastle University Business School has offered a Master of Business Administration (MBA) qualification since 1982 and has been accredited by the Association of MBAs since The design of the Newcastle MBA is underpinned by the increasing demand of professional managers to enhance their skills and knowledge to cope with the everchanging global business environment. The MBA programmes are post-experience programmes, suitable for those with a significant degree of management work experience already and who are seeking to develop their career into more senior positions. 5 The Executive MBA is ideal for working professionals looking to combine full interaction with their studies together with the responsibilities of a demanding career and family life. The Executive MBA provides students with the ability to build their managerial knowledge and capacity while enhancing their professional managerial skills in a highly applied manner within the block taught two-year programme of study. Focused group teaching (average intake of 20 students). International programme content centred on globalisation and change. Highly experienced cohort (average age 35 years old) providing opportunities to gain extensive exposure to fellow students business experience. The Executive MBA affords the opportunity to share experiences with a group of like-minded individuals, from varied backgrounds, and will challenge you by bringing cutting-edge academic thinking together with relevant, topical and up-to-date advice and case studies from active practitioners. 7 Programme structure The period of study for the part-time MBA is normally two years. Teaching starts with a three-day induction on Wednesday 2 October The basic teaching pattern is from 08:30 to 13:00 and then 14:00 to 18:30 across regular Wednesday Friday blocks of teaching. Some teaching, eg guest lectures, industrial visits or additional academic activities, may take place outside these times. Please refer to the Executive MBA timetable for detailed teaching time and venues. The Executive MBA timetable is also available on Blackboard under EMBA Programme Info. Programme delivery The delivery mechanism of all lectures combines theory with practice. MBA students are often required to reflect on their professional experiences through active group discussions and debates on relevant theories as well as academic lectures. An active learning attitude is essential during the process of studying for an MBA. Students will be provided with reading lists and case studies during the course of the programme. Delivery methods also include business simulations, guest speakers, team activities and industrial visits, subject to the arrangement of module leaders. 6 MORE: ncl.ac.uk/nubs

9 Elective modules All Executive MBA students will select elective modules with a total value of 30 credits over the two-year programme, to be taken in Semester 2 of Year 2. Dissertation The dissertation is worth 40 credits and is the opportunity for you to integrate and apply your learning to real-world situations and problems. The dissertation process commences during the second year. We will then allocate you a supervisor who will provide guidance through the dissertation writing process. The dissertation is a major piece of work (12,000 words), which will enable you to apply the knowledge and skills developed during the taught element of your degree programme. You will be expected to demonstrate evaluative and analytical ability, gain an in-depth knowledge of the topic and understand the relevance of the context in which the investigation is set. The dissertation also allows you to challenge and contribute to management knowledge, understand the complexity of the world of organisations and business, and appreciate the practical applicability of management theory. Submission of dissertation The submission deadline will be in September The PEC committee may, in exceptional circumstances, grant an extension of up to three months to the time for submission of the dissertation. An extension of more than three months can only be granted by the Dean of Postgraduate Studies in the HASS Faculty. MORE: ncl.ac.uk/nubs
