Encouraging positive lifestyle changes among hard-to-reach men through a Football in the Community programme at an English Premier League Football Club Kathryn Curran Liverpool John Moores University, School of Sport and Exercise Sciences

THE OUTLINE PROBLEM Introduction The Problem - Men s Health in the UK & Liverpool A Solution? - English Premier League (EPL) Football Clubs Premier League Health - Everton Football Club Healthy Hearts Project What worked? and what didn t! Summary

THE PROBLEM THE PROBLEM

THE PROBLEM The UK has a major problem with the poor state of men s health Men have a lower life expectancy than women More men than woman are overweight or obese Men have a higher incidence rate for cancers, heart conditions and suicide More then 120,000 men in the UK die prematurely each year (DH, 2002) Men s Health Forum (2010) report that only 40% of men in the UK are achieving the recommended levels of moderate intensity physical activity (150 minutes per week (CMO, 2011).

Heart Health in Liverpool Male life expectancy in Liverpool is the third lowest in England 46.3% of men (16+) in Liverpool are classed as overweight (Liverpool PCT, 2007) Men in Merseyside have a higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease in comparison with the rest of England: 14.6% v 13.6% (Heart of Mersey, Annual Report )

THE PROBLEM Reluctance for men to engage with traditional health services Men in England visit their doctor less frequently than women and are also much less likely to use other health services (MHF, 2010).

Hard to reach?

Our Healthy Hearts Project

The aim of the project is to use the powerful brand of Everton Football Club as a vehicle to motivate and inspire otherwise hard-toreach males in Liverpool, to make positive, healthy lifestyle choices.

In order for men to engage in health issues they need to be on their own territory, where they are comfortable and feel unthreatened (Pete Westwood 2007)

A joint venture between Everton in the Community and Liverpool John Moores University, School of Sport and Exercise Sciences, saw the development of the Everton Active Family Centre (EAFC) which was a unique fitness facility based within the grounds of Goodison Park.

Aims Overall positive impact on heart health: Engage with men who have a lack of engagement with traditional health services Engage with men who are overweight/obese/at risk of heart disease Greater awareness and dissemination of heart health messages Reduction in resting heart rate Improved blood pressure Improved fitness Improvement in cardiac function

SO WHAT WORKED? AND WHAT DIDN T?

AIMS Overall positive impact on heart health: Engage with men who have a lack of engagement with traditional health services Engage with men who are overweight/obese/at risk of heart disease Greater awareness and dissemination of heart health messages Reduction in resting heart rate Improved blood pressure Improved fitness Improvement in cardiac function

THE FOOTBALL CLUB BRAND

THE FOOTBALL CLUB BRAND Men come to the sessions regardless of colour allegiance, so we have both Everton and Liverpool supporters. However, what comes up again and again is that being able to say: I train at Goodison Park is something that they boast about with their mates.

WEEKLY PHYSICAL ACTIVITY SESSIONS Fitness sessions per week: 1. Football (Monday PM) 2. Circuit Training (Tuesday PM) 3. Boxing (Thursday PM) Capacity of participants per session On going for duration of the project If I didn t come here, I wouldn t go anywhere, see anyone or do anything

Case Study- Tony Tony* joined the Look After Your Heart, Look After Your Soul programme in early January 2012 (at the beginning of the 12 week intervention). Tony is a taxi driver and joined the programme as he felt his health was suffering from working long days and nights in his taxi. Tony didn t like going to the gym as he felt intimated and also couldn t afford the fees but as he is a huge Everton Football Club fan and enjoys recreational football he thought that this project would be perfect for him. Tony engaged in the programme on a weekly basis and took part in all of the lab screening which he described as fascinating. During an interview with the project co-ordinator Tony stated that his favourite things about the project where the new friends he had made but also how it had made him become less embarrassed about caring about his health;

Continued I know I ve got too much weight on me, and I always used to make jokes about it with my mates because I thought I couldn t be seen to care, do you know what I mean, but really, it was a cover up, it s not funny, and now I m doing something about it I m not embarrassed anymore. During the course Tony felt that he has been become fitter, healthier and more outgoing. Following the 12 week intervention, Tony has gone on to regularly attend the evening physical activity sessions.

CONCLUDING REMARKS Poor health of men in UK, poor heart health of men in Liverpool Appeal to engage men in health through EPL football clubs community schemes Using the power of the FC brand is a useful tool Our Healthy Hearts Project- what worked and what didn t Community health programmes need to operate through shared practice in order to make an positive impact and produce sustainable programmes Make every penny count
