1 OBO Blast OCTOBER 12, 201 VOLUME 2, NUMBER 6 October Monthly Board of Education Meeting Acknowledges Perfect Scores and Students/Parent of the Month At the October monthly Board of Education Meeting held on Tuesday, October 9, 2012, students were presented with certificates for being selected Student of the Month (SOTM). On a monthly basis, students are recognized for exemplary behavior, academics and citizenship by their school. Students selected for the month of September are: Name School Grade Jamar S. Sanchez Rosa Parks Central Community School Math At the October monthly Board of Education Meeting students were also acknowledged for receiving a perfect score on the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge (NJASK). Nineteen students representing 6 elementary schools received certificates for Academic Excellence, bumper stickers and medals. After students were acknowledged, the Parent of the Month, selected by the meeting s host school, Park Avenue, was presented with a certificate. The POTM for September is Mr. De Shon R. Parks (pictured right with his son, Principal Hackett, Superintendent Lee and BOE President Arthur). Mr. Parks is the proud father of six sons, five biological and one adopted. He is also a devoted and loving husband who volunteers as a football coach and assistant Sunday School Teacher. Mr. Parks is a reformed gang member who is a mentor in the community to assist youngsters in becoming productive members of society. He is the founder and co-president of the newly formed non-profit organization, "Not Orange". Teen Summit 2012 Begins with ManUp the Play Teen Summit 2012 begins, Friday, October 12, 2012 with ManUp the Play, written and produced by Elijah M. Brown and Jamal T. Hinnant who play a total of 6 different characters in this production (scenes are pictured below) which "captures what it means to be a man. The play is open to students in grades 8 12 who are registered to attend the Teen Summit. Following the play will be a panel discussion led by Natasha Akinyele with students from area colleges. On Saturday, October 13, 2012, the Teen Summit is also open to 6th and 7th grade students. Saturday will have a full day of events including seminars for young men and young women; there will be a special presentation from Reginald Rosarian from Planned Parenthood and seminars in Spanish and Creole. Students can also participate in a variety of workshops including a performance presentation, a hip-hop dance class and an Ultimate Frisbee lesson. There will also be a video workshop where students will learn how to put together a set, shoot a video, and breakdown the set. This workshop will be lead by Orange Preparatory Academy's Smartlab teacher, Justin Niemczyh. A celebrity publicist, who has worked with Alicia Keys, Whitney Houston, Ruben Studdard, Tyrese Gibson, and many others, will teach another workshop. 3 Pink-Out Event Raises $3,641 for the American Cancer Society On Friday, October 5, 2012, the Orange High School (OHS) Tornadoes hosted their third annual Pink-Out football game in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The team played in pink jerseys in their 35 to 19 win over Millburn High School. The game extended the district s daylong recognition of cancer awareness, which included a Dress Down Day fundraiser and the sale of pink jerseys. The entire district observed the event (see Forest Street School Cares picture on left) with staff and student joining together for a worthy cause. This year the district raised $3,641 for the American Cancer Society, bringing the total contribution to over $13,000 in the past 3 years. The American Cancer Society contributed informational brochures and breast cancer awareness giveaways for Orange High School s Pink-Out Game patrons. Volunteer organizations including Angies Angels, Not Orange and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity distributed the items on their behalf. All monies raised by the school district will be donated to the American Cancer Society. During the Pink-Out game s halftime ceremonies, there was a check presentation to Michele Petrino, Director, Distinguished Events for the Metro NJ Region of the American Cancer Society. Oakwood Avenue School s Week of Respect Activities I AM A Bucket Filler: As a school wide project, beginning Friday, September 28, 2012, Oakwood Avenue School students, faculty and staff were presented with a great challenge to be kind and respectful; offer words of encouragement and show empathy without dipping into anyone s feelings or (bucket). The school rose to the challenge, not only displaying behaviors as bucket fillers in their actions, but also using bucket slips to fill one another's actual buckets in the classroom, with notes of positive comments. Doing something nice for someone else fills your OWN bucket and the bucket of the person you help!! This challenge was presented during the Week of Respect to discourage any type of bullying or disrespectful behaviors. Respecting Ourselves and Internet Safety:

4 The Orange Police Department visited Oakwood on October 2nd and 3rd. Detective Hill and Officer Brown began the first day discussing respect and internet safety. The officers discouraged the students from using computers and posting mean and cruel statements about their peers. What one might believe to only be a joke could lead to greater problems. Hurtful words often last a lifetime. Oakwood s students were reminded that some people seek ways to hurt themselves and or others when they are constantly teased or made to feel ashamed. Face book and other internet sites were discouraged, however, several 6th and 7th grade students volunteered that they have a Face book page. The officers stressed, unless you are in the presence of a responsible adult you should not be allowed to access the internet. Lieutenant Cody addressed the group of 6th and 7th graders and reminded them of the importance of being respectful. He explained that it is okay to have a good time, however, there is a proper place for all things and fooling around in school isn t one of those places. Lieutenant Soto and Detective Hill returned for a second day of respecting ourselves. They addressed the importance of being equipped with the tools to be positive and productive citizens in the community. Through the use of technology grades K through 7 created video presentations of the importance of being respectful versus being mean disrespectful bullies. This project was presented during our assembly program held in our Multipurpose Room. We also enjoyed some Role Play which was presented by some of our teachers to demonstrate to the students some negative behaviors they often display. The staff acted out the negative and then the positive behaviors and had some audience participation with questions and answers. In collaboration with one of Oakwood s community partners, Mrs. Peaks, a mentor from St. Matthew Church, helped to invite a motivational speaker, Rev. Dana Owens, Pastor of Messiah Baptist Church located in East Orange, NJ to speak at to the school. The message received during Oakwood s culminating activity: We face a choice every moment of every day. We can fill one another's buckets, or we can dip from them. It's an important choice -- one that profoundly influences our relationships, productivity, health, and happiness.
