Social media is media designed to be disseminated through social interaction, created using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques.... media that is created to be shared freely Social media are primarily Internet- and mobile-based tools for sharing and discussing information among human beings.[1] The term most often refers to activities that integrate technology, telecommunications and social interaction, and the construction of words, pictures, videos and audio.... Social media are works of user-created video, audio, text or multimedia that are published and shared in a social environment, such as a blog, wiki or video hosting site. Any website or web service that utilizes a 'social' or 'Web 2.0' philosophy. This includes blogs, social networks, social news, wikis, etc. Software tools that allow groups to generate content and engage in peer-to-peer conversations and exchange of content (examples are YouTube, Flickr, Facebook, MySpace etc) Social media is any form of online publication or presence that allows end users to engage in multi-directional conversations in or around the content on the website. social media is the use of technology combined with social interaction to create or co-create value. A category of sites that is based on user participation and user-generated content. They include social networking sites like LinkedIn or Facebook, social bookmarking sites like Del.icio.us, social news sites like Digg or Reddit, and other sites that are centred on user interaction.

8 So In the last 20 years the world has changed The way we consume media has changed The way we interact with our friends and colleagues has changed The way our children interact and play has changed Approximately 70% of the businesses surveyed agreed that social media marketing was changing the way they communicate. Approximately 48% were adding budget for social media marketing, mostly increased staff allocation (time). The biggest barrier to implementing social media strategies (46%) was lack of knowledge. (source Marketing Sherpa 2009) Have we as businesses changed with it?
9 Who is doing it? Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Social media You Tube Innovators Early Adopters Early Majority Late Majority Laggards This is open to lots of debate. But most businesses are slow to adopt. Even businesses whose consumers are early adopters.
10 Some quick facts 93% of social media users believe a company should have a presence in social media. 85% believe a company should not only be present but also interact with its consumers via social media. 56% of users feel both a stronger connection with and are better served by companies when they can interact with them in a social media environment. 70% of consumers want to use social media to communicate with businesses. 60% of consumers said the use of social media would even improve their loyalty to a company. 57% of consumers also expect companies to monitor social networks for customer feedback and to respond. 96% of people born in 2000 have already joined a social network 20% of search results for the worlds Top 20 Brands are links to user generated content and it s growing. 78% of consumers trust peer recommendation, only 14% trust advertisements Sources: CONE Business in Social Media study and Yankee Group
