PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP #1: HEALTH, SAFETY, AND RISK MANAGEMENT FOR STUDY ABROAD: COMMUNITY COLLEGE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT NETWORK BEST PRACTICES This workshop will focus on key strategies for building high quality study abroad and service learning programs abroad with an emphasis on strategies for health, safety, and program design in the developing world. Key topics will include examples of Community College Sustainable Development (CCSDN) training models, site selection, pre-departure student data collection, orientations, and emergency response planning. CCSDN is a U.S. based national consortium managed by Madison College in Wisconsin, which aims to increase the capacity of community colleges to offer faculty-led short-term study abroad programs in STEM and sustainable development fields. Created with support from the U.S. Department of State, a centerpiece of the CCSDN network is a training model that emphasizes risk management and best practices to allow colleges to safely operate study abroad programs in developing world locations. In 2015, Madison College and the CCSDN program were nationally recognized by the Institute for International Education with the Andrew Heiskell Award for Innovation in International Education as a best practice model for expanding community college engagement in study abroad. PRESENTERS: Geoff Bradshaw, Ph.D., is the Madison College International Education Director and Director of the CCSDN network. Bradshaw has more than 15 years of experience in international education leadership and was recognized by CCID in 2011 with the Werner Kubsch award for outstanding achievement in international education. He has presented and provided consulting for numerous colleges on issues of study abroad risk management. Tammy Gibbs is the Madison College Study Abroad Coordinator and a lead trainer for the CCSDN Network. She has a background and Masters in Experiential Education and has led both study abroad and wilderness programs. She has been in the International Education field for a decade. Tammy currently is the Education Abroad Representative for the Wisconsin Association of International Educators. Page 3 of 8

PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP #2: INTERNATIONALIZATION 101 The definition of comprehensive internationalization is a commitment, confirmed through action, to infuse international and comparative perspectives throughout the teaching, research, and service missions of higher education (Hudzik, 2011, p. 1). This pragmatic workshop introduces CCID s System of Comprehensive Internationalization and demonstrates how to implement CCID s copyrighted and validated Framework for Comprehensive Internationalization (FCI) at your college. The overall outcome for this session is to demonstrate how other institutions have implemented the CCID framework as a self-study and continuous improvement to increase campus commitment to International Education and to scale up international education at their respective institutions. Through the use of role play, sharing experience and walking participants through the FCI process, participants will learn how to build buy-in, increase campus collaboration toward internationalizing their campus, deliver a successful workshop on their campuses and develop a strategic internationalization plan. As a tool for continuous improvement, FCI may be used at colleges with active international programming, colleges in the exploration stage of internationalization, or colleges in between. PRESENTERS: Austin Baade, International Education Coordinator, Waukesha County Technical College, Wisconsin, USA Chet Shaw, Dean of Student Services, Moraine Valley Community College, Illinois, USA Tandra Sbrocco, Global Education Coordinator, Lakeshore Technical College, Wisconsin, USA Tod Treat, Executive Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs, Tacoma Community College, Washington, USA Page 4 of 8

PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP #3: CULTURALLY INCLUSIVE EDUCATORS A key element in Humber College's award winning internationalization strategy is ensuring that faculty are equipped to support internationalization efforts across the campus. With more than 3,600 international students from over 100 different countries and over 500 students going abroad, Humber is committed to ensuring faculty can support the development of global citizenship across the campus. Humber's Culturally Inclusive Educator's program provides faculty with the tools needed to support this development. With content stemming from this certificate program participants in this workshop will gain an understanding of the array of adjustment challenges facing international students including English language acquisition. Explore the domains of culture and how this knowledge may reduce and reframe our interactions with students. Come away with creative ideas for enhancing your classroom to engage and support international students and internationalize your curriculum. This session will include group discussions, videos, and activities to support faculty in adapting and expanding their teaching practice to support international higher education students. PRESENTERS FROM HUMBER COLLEGE, TORONTO: Rebecca Fitzgerald, Manager, International Mobility Denise Gardner, Director, Professional Development Sigrid Johnson, Professor, School of Liberal Arts & Sciences Diane Simpson, Dean, International Bianca Sorbera, Professor and Program Coordinator, Culturally Inclusive Educator Certificate Page 5 of 8

PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP #4: RESOURCES TO ESTABLISH AND ENHANCE EAST ASIAN LANGUAGE PROGRAMS This workshop will explore available opportunities for community colleges to establish and enhance Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language programs. Speakers will detail funding opportunities and program models that have a record of success both at the university and community college levels. The workshop will cover available third-party institutional partnerships, faculty recruitment, instructor training, professional development, curriculum issues, program advocacy, and recommendations to develop long-term institutional commitment. Importantly, the workshop will present success stories that can serve as models for new institutions hoping to establish high quality programs in these languages. Representatives from partner organizations as well as community colleges that have established strong language programs will form the presenting panel. PRESENTERS: Thomas Mason, Executive Director, Alliance for Language Learning and Educational Exchange (ALLEX Foundation), New York, USA Xuejun (Jim) Yu, Ph.D., Director, Confucius Institute & China Initiatives at Miami Dade College, Florida, USA Ms. Cheryl L. Berman, Professor of World Languages, Howard Community College, Maryland, USA. Fearghal Rafferty, Fulbright Language Teaching Assistant in Irish, Davidson County Community College, North Carolina, USA Omar Khedr, Fulbright Language Teaching Assistant in Arabic, Davidson County Community College, North Carolina, USA Page 6 of 8

PEER LEARNING COMMUNITIES Each Peer Learning Community will feature a panel of experts for about 45 minutes, and the opportunity to network with peers on the specific topic for the duration of the session. Topics will be available in CCID s online learning communities before, during, and after the event because learning never stops! Topics include: University Partnerships/Pathway Programs Pathways to higher education flow across borders in ever increasing complexity. Experienced panelists may address topics such as secondary/high school completion for international students; joint degree programs; transfers from community/technical colleges to universities; and accredited offshore programs. Learn how your colleagues started and nurture partnerships for international study. Education Abroad The Education Abroad Peer Learning Community will discuss successful study abroad models at various community colleges. Topics will include opportunities for funding/capacity building, marketing strategies, risk management, study abroad consortia, the use of third party providers and successful program components. The discussion will include IIE s Generation Study Abroad initiative to double the number of U.S. students who study abroad by 2020 and ways to reach under-served populations. Whether you re just getting study abroad off the ground or if you re already running numerous programs, these sessions will give you the opportunity to learn from your peers and share your successes. International Student Recruitment International student recruitment ranks among the most common strategies to internationalize college campuses as well as generate revenue for the institution. Common challenges are creating and scaling support structures when beginning to recruit and integrating international students with domestic students for meaningful interactions. These networking sessions will allow you to ask questions and provide answers for colleagues in various stages of recruitment. Panelists will represent institutions with varying levels of experience, and of varying sizes, to provide relevant information for the breadth of institutions attending the conference. Faculty Forum CCID s Faculty Forum is designed specifically for faculty, to assist them in developing all things international. This year s Forum will focus on using international travel experiences as stepping stones in globalizing courses and curriculum. Faculty will have an opportunity to hear several brief presentations from faculty who have incorporated their travel experiences into course content. Everyone will then have the opportunity to talk informally with the presenters and offer their own experiences in several round table discussions. This session will only be offered twice, once in each Peer Learning Community block on Sunday. Federal Resources for Community College Internationalization Hear from panelists representing numerous U.S. government agencies about how technical and community colleges can forge deeper global engagement, and access information and funding opportunities to support the efforts. Panelists will provide brief overviews, and the session will change to roundtable discussions for attendees to gather more details from presenters. Pending confirmation, expected agencies may include the U.S. Department of State, Department of Education, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and others. Page 7 of 8

Getting to Know CCID & Meet the CCID Board Attendees will learn about CCID s new operating model and programs, including CCID PartnerFind; CCID Learning Communities; Global Service Fellowships; and the International Experience Student Survey program, among other CCID efforts. Newcomers and repeat conference attendees can all gain new knowledge about the association. CCID s Board Members, each a college President or Chancellor, will be on hand after the presentation for networking and to answer questions about the organization. This session will only be offered on Saturday. During the Awards Luncheon on Sunday, February 21, 2016: Sy Fersch Global Forum: Collaboration to Document the State of the Field There is currently no association that can assess how many community colleges are involved with international education. As such, there is a need to not only profile the State of the Field at individual colleges/districts, but to build a database for what is occurring nationwide and around the world. This panel shares a process that started as an initial discussion on a specific program and which grew to discussing alignment and engaging colleges in Florida to do a first time ever state of the field report. There is now the opportunity to begin stateto-state comparative data and of course to make new plans for the future. This panel will share how collaboration is at the heart of new efforts to document the State of the Field. PRESENTERS: Shawn Woodin, CCID Interim Executive Director/CEO- Collaboration: CCID PartnerFind Project Paloma Rodriguez, Coordinator of International Education, Santa Fe College, and CCID Project Manager- Documenting the Field: CCID Global Certificate survey and Learning Community Karen Borglum, AVP, Office of Curriculum and Assessment, Valencia College- Documenting the Field: Valencia College s role in program alignment with FCIE colleges and universities Vilma Fuentes, AVP of Academic Affairs and SIO, Santa Fe College- Documenting the Field: Using the Florida State of the Field Report to benchmark program development among Florida state colleges and to inform the state of Florida about International Education initiatives. Rosalind Latiner Raby, Director of California Colleges for International Education (CCIE): Using the CCIE State of the Field reports for advocacy at the local, state, and national levels. Look for program updates in the coming weeks! Page 8 of 8
