1 6 th Graduate Course on Neuropsychopharmacology October 9-17, 2008 This 6 th graduate Neuropsychopharmacology course is organized by the Graduate School Neurosciences Amsterdam Rotterdam (ONWAR) and the Rudolf Magnus Graduate School of Neurosciences and designed for PhD students and postdocs in the field of neurosciences. The course addresses our current understanding of drug targets in the brain, the pharmacology of CNS active drugs as well as drug discovery strategies, allowing students to become familiar with the fascinating field of neuropsychopharmacology. In this respect, the major classes of pharmacotherapeuticals for the clinical management of major neurological and psychiatric diseases and the pathological mechanisms of these brain disorders will be discussed. Each day addresses a particular type of neurological or psychiatric disorder from basics to bedside. The program also includes a visit to the R&D unit of Solvay Pharmaceuticals BV. Lectures are primarily scheduled in the mornings. The afternoon sessions include demonstrations and site visits. Four keynote lectures, that are open to all interested scientists, are scheduled at the end of the day and will be presented by leading experts in the field. The different topics of the course will be presented at different locations in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Weesp. Travel instructions and local maps are attached. Attendance of all lectures is mandatory and will be honoured with a certificate. Accreditation covers 56 hours/2,0 ECTS in the graduate teaching programs on neuroscience. 8 HOW TO GET TO VU UNIVERSITY AMSTERDAM / VU UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER From Central Station metro tram 51, direction Amstelveen Westwijk (16 minutes), stop at: De Boelelaan/VU tram 5, direction Amstelveen Binnenhof (25 minutes), stop at: De Boelelaan/VU tram 16 or 24, direction VUmc, final stop From Station Amsterdam Zuid express tram 51 (1 minute), direction Amstelveen Westwijk tram 5 (1 minute), direction Amstelveen Binnenhof it's a 10 minute walk to the VU from Station Amsterdam Zuid Car (discouraged) The A-10 Amsterdam ring road can be reached from all directions. Follow the A-10 to the Zuid/Amstelveen exit S 108. Turn left at the end of the slip road onto Amstelveenseweg: after about three hundred yards (at the VU University hospital building) turn left again onto De Boelelaan. VU University Amsterdam can be reached via city routes S 108 and S 109. Parking There is a limited amount of parking space around VU University Amsterdam itself in De Boelelaan, which has parking bays, and also in Karel Lotsylaan. There is paid parking on VU Amsterdam parking lot to the right of the Hospital Outpatient Clinic. There is even more parking space on the east side of Buitenveldertselaan at the junction with Willem van Weldammelaan, within 5 minutes walking distance of VU University Amsterdam. A number of parking places for the handicapped are reserved in front of the VU University Amsterdam Main Building and within its grounds. 9 HOW TO GET TO UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER UTRECHT Restaurant Stratenum is on the 1st floor of the Stratenum, Universiteitsweg 100, Utrecht (De Uithof) With the car from Amersfoort: to Urecht via the A28; take turn De Uithof/UMC. After leaving the highway go left at the traffic lights. You are at the Universiteitsweg. Parking facilities closest to the Stratenum are the parking facilitities of the UMC (location Academisch Ziekenhuis Utrecht). from Amsterdam via the A1: take turn Hilversum (A27) and follow signs De Uithof/UMC. 12 HOW TO GET TO UNIVERSITY OF AMSTERDAM SCIENCE PARK WATERGRAAFSMEER Science Park Amsterdam is situated in the Oost/Watergraafsmeer district, on the eastern city limits. All buildings of the University of Amsterdam in this area are situated on the Kruislaan. By public transport The Science Park is well accessible by bus 40 from railway stations Amsterdam Amstel and Amsterdam Muiderpoort. This bus keeps a highly regular service, and traveling time is less than 10 minutes. For a timetable of bus 40, click on the link below. Refer to Look for timetable bus 40 from Amstel Station or Muiderpoort Station (in Dutch) By car All motorways to Amsterdam come onto the Amsterdam ring road, the A10'. * Coming from Amersfoort, follow the signposts for Utrecht/Den Haag when you get onto the ring. * Coming from Utrecht, Den Haag, Schiphol, Haarlem or Zaandam, follow the signposts for Amersfoort when you get onto the ring. * In both cases, choose exit Watergraafsmeer / S113 ( Ring Oost') * At the end of the exit lane, follow directions Watergraafsmeer / Sciencepark onto the Middenweg. You will see what looks like a park, the cemetary "Oosterbegraafplaats" on the left-hand side. Turn right onto Kruislaan at the first major intersection. * After about 1 kilometer you pass through a tunnel under the railway, beyond which Science Park Amsterdam is located: on the left-hand side Astronomy, Computer Science, NIKHEF, FOM and SARA, on the right-hand side Biology Centre Anna's Hoeve and the Matrix buildings II, III en IV.
