What is Social Networking? A Web site that provides a virtual community for people interested in a particular subject or just to "hang out" together. Members create their own online "profile" with biographical data, pictures, likes, dislikes and any other information they choose to post. They communicate with each other by voice, chat, instant message, videoconference and blogs, and the service typically provides a way for members to contact friends of other members.

Social Networking Uses by Adults Today, people use the Internet to conduct many tasks: To research financial, family, and other personal decisions Network with other business associates and clients Attend virtual classes to obtain online degrees or certifications Connect with other hobbyists who share your passion for the same interests and activities Conduct scientific or academic collaboration and research Accumulate and spread news or rumor across the global community

Popular Social Networking Activities National School Boards Association (NSBA) Percentages of online tweens* and teens who say they do these activities at least weekly * A child between middle childhood and adolescence, usually between 8 and 12 years old.

Social Networking Risks These sites give kids a way to connect with people they know, but they also allow easy access from people they don t know. Strangers can use a student s profile to figure out where she goes to school, where she lives, what activities she participates in, and other personal information. Predators can use fake identities to give children a false sense of security and convince them into a meeting in person.

Social Networking Risks Access to information that may contain adult content Photos and videos may be taken from the online profiles and used in unauthorized ways Cyber bullying Identity Theft

The Positive Side: Educational Applications Global communities Wikis: Discussion groups Blogs: Journals Video conferences: Interacting with experts Epals Webkinz Discovery Education The School United The Global Education Collaborative Blogmeister

Survey Findings: Facebook is used by 48% of 3 rd, 4 th and 6 th grade students. Approximately 3-4 students in every 3 rd grade classroom has a Facebook account. It s cool to be on Facebook. Facebook is a social network to be used by people older than 13. Some students are aware of risks and have asked Technology teachers for support to manage their Facebook account in a safe way. Some parents have decided their children are not allowed to have an /facebook account.

What happens at ATS? TWO CONCERNS: a) The use of Facebook and MSN by Elementary Students without acknowledging risks (safety issues). Students decisions and risks regardless of what they have learned in school on how to protect themselves in cyberspace. b) Cyber-harassment and cyber bullying

Group Discussion: Jigsaw

Groups Negative Effects Parental Awareness Positive Effects School Involvement in e-safety Efectos Positivos Paola Marcela Luna Katie Martha Holguera Ofelia Stasha Abby Carrie Linda Rosie Martha Anna Jaime Paty de Leon Negative Effects E-relationship between T/S Parents Awareness El rol de la escuela en la seguridad en la red Yvonne Marilu Claire Rosalia Laura Solbes Elvia Rosa Alma Leiva Laura Ramirez Raquel Laura Lammoglia Gaby leal Perla Ortiz

Writing our ATS e-safety policy What are the positives and negative effects that may have the Social Networking Sites in our students lives? Our students are aware of what is considered risky behavior. They involve in it regardless. What else can be done so they can take better decisions? How could we include Social Networking sites in our lessons?

What steps can an educator take when online threats and harassment are brought to his or her attention? What can the school do? Can the school discipline a student for conduct that takes place outside of school on home computers or cellular phones?

Bibliography

7 things schools should do: 1. Schools should look at different social networking sites. Teachers and administers should explore different options on how to communicate with their students. 2. Schools should try to use social networking with teachers and administrators. 3. Schools should create ways to use social networking such as, blogs, test review sessions, and projects that need collaboration. 4. Schools should support students to use social networking. 5. Schools should work with students that enjoy social networking rather than normal teacher methods. 6. Schools should find ways that technology can help benefit schools. 7. Schools should encourage social networking sites to increase educational value.
