4 BENEFIT No.3 Professional guidance on ETHICS ISSUES. PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCE The Professional Guidance Committee has a two-pronged approach in assisting members with ethical dilemmas and questions. The Committee maintains an ethics hotline that is administered by a licensed Pennsylvania attorney, who has handled in excess of 15,000 calls since the hotline s inception in January He addresses not only ethics but risk management and professionalism questions. He brings a wealth of experience and expertise to these complex and ever-changing areas of the law that are so important to all practicing attorneys. In addition to the hotline, the attorney serves as counsel to the Professional Guidance Committee which provides Bar Association members with formal written opinions from the Committee on ethical issues pertaining to their own conduct in the future. Formal opinions issued by the Committee since 1987 can be found on the Association s website. The identity of hotline callers as well as those requesting formal opinions is held in the strictest confidence and is known only to the counsel to the Committee and its chair. The monthly meetings of the Committee are conducted in confidence and in closed session, except in such cases as the Committee otherwise specifically determines. The Committee, in its discretion, may publish its opinions, without the names of the persons involved. RESOLVE FEE DISPUTES The Philadelphia Bar Association s Fee Disputes Committee has two programs designed to resolve disagreements over legal fees.

5 The Lawyer-Client Fee Dispute Resolution Program is a free service that handles disagreements between clients and lawyers over fees charged for legal representation. The Program offers two methods to help clients and attorneys resolve their disagreements: mediation and arbitration. The Lawyer Fee Dispute Resolution Program seeks to resolve disagreements between lawyers over legal fees out of court and at a low cost. Mediation and/or arbitration is offered to parties who request the services of this program. LEGISLATIVE ACTION CENTER The Philadelphia Bar Association is unique among metropolitan bar associations in its commitment to a comprehensive legislative action program. Association members have opportunities to affect governmental decision-making at the federal, state and local levels. Association Sections and Committees have the opportunity to review city, state and federal legislation and to make suggestions regarding legislation of interest. Sections and Committees are often called upon to take a proactive stance by assisting in the drafting of legislation, and are sometimes the impetus for initiating legislation. In order for legislators to understand the interests and needs of their constituency, they need to hear from you directly. You can make a difference in legislative outcomes and be successful in directing the actions of your legislators by being in direct communication with them. The Philadelphia Bar Association has made that process as simple as possible by including an automated electronic communication vehicle in the Legislative Action Center at philadelphiabar.org. BENEFIT No.4 A legislative program to CHAMPION YOUR INTERESTS to lawmakers in Philadelphia, Harrisburg and Washington, D.C. OFFICE OF DIVERSITY The Association s Office of Diversity strives to ensure greater opportunities for the inclusion of diverse attorneys in the legal profession. The Office partners with hiring partners and managers at law firms, legal departments and public agencies to develop educational and community outreach activities. The Office guides, supports and leads the diversity and inclusion efforts for the entire Association, including the Board of Governors, the Association s Sections, Committees, Divisions, Task Forces and external efforts. It also serves as a resource for local affinity bar associations/organizations, law firms, corporate law departments and law schools that seek support advancing diversity and inclusion. The Association s commitment to diversity and inclusion is reflected in the recent adoption of a formal Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan.
