1 Bell Tower Retirement December 2013 Bell Tower Retirement Welcomes New Owner Bell Tower Retirement is pleased to announce a change in ownership. On December 1, 2013, Joel Callahan, Founder and President of Callahan Construction, will become the new owner of Bell Tower Retirement. Joel and his management team have been managing Bell Tower Retirement since June He brings 23 years of experience in residential and commercial construction and has already completed several improvements to the community. Joel is the owner of two other assisted living communities, Grand Haven in Eldridge, IA and River Bend in Cascade, IA. He also owns Windsor Park, an independent senior living community, in Dubuque, IA. Judy Zeman Accepts Position of Manager Bell Tower Retirement is pleased to announce that Judy Zeman has accepted the position of Manager. Judy joined Bell Tower Retirement in April Her past experience includes cardiac nursing and coordinating cardiac-related research studies in Rockford, IL for the past 20 years. She truly enjoys working with the senior population and listening to their life experiences. Her duties will include overseeing day-to-day operations. I think about all of the changes that have occurred over the past several months and am pleased at how everyone, residents and staff, have come together to make such wonderful improvements. Together we all make a special community. I am looking forward to continuing the enhancements that Joel and the management team have already accomplished. My goals are to provide the best care for our residents in a safe and nurturing environment. I am excited to see the improvements that are yet to come and I look forward to serving all of you. 2 December Birthdays Eleanor Tigges December 26 Jack Elrick December 19 New Residents Nancy Ray, of Galena, IL, joined Bell Tower Retirement in November. Her husband s name is John. She has two children, Janet and Mark. She is a former guidance counselor and enjoys puzzles. Please welcome Nancy to Bell Tower Retirement. Richard Clark, of Galena, IL, joined Bell Tower Retirement in November. He is a former custom cabinetry builder and also wrote for the Galena Gazette. Richard enjoys reading and going for walks. Please welcome Richard to Bell Tower Retirement. Honoring Our Veterans Bell Tower Retirement held a ceremony on Veterans Day to honor our residents who served in our military. The ceremony included a mention of each veteran living at Bell Tower Retirement, a flag retirement ceremony, and a rifle salute.

Don t Miss These Upcoming Events Reflections in the Park Bell Tower Retirement will be taking our residents to enjoy the wonderful light displays at Murphy Park on Sunday, December 8th at 5:30 PM. Resident and Family Christmas Party Bell Tower Retirement will be throwing a Christmas Party for our residents and their families on Saturday, December 14th at 2:00 PM. The party will take place in the Community Dining Room. Appetizers and refreshments will be served and musical entertainment will be provided. All residents and families are welcome. Please sign-up at the front desk if you and your family would like to attend. Christmas Dinner Bell Tower Retirement will be serving Christmas dinner on Wednesday, December 25th at 11:30 AM. Residents and family members are welcome. We will be serving ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, green bean casserole, cranberries, and cherry pie. Cost for guests is $10.00 per person. Please sign-up at the front desk if you will be joining us. New Registered Nurse Hired Bell Tower Retirement would like to welcome Jill Hesselman to the management team. Jill is a registered nurse with 11 years of experience in the senior healthcare industry. She is originally from Storm Lake, IA. She is excited to be a part of the team and is looking forward to getting to know each resident.

4 From the Nurse s Desk Twelve Health and Safety Tips for the Holidays The winter season has arrived so please pay special attention to your health and be safe this holiday season. Give the gift of health and safety to yourself and others by following these holiday tips. 1. Wash your hands often to keep from spreading germs and getting sick. To properly wash your hands, use soapp and clean running water for at least 20 seconds. 2. Bundle up to stay warm and dry. Be sure to wear appropriate outdoor clothing: layers of light, warm clothing; mittens; hats; scarves; and waterproof boots. 3. Manage stress. Don t over commit yourself which will help prevent holiday anxiety and pressure. 4. Get enough sleep, at least 8 hours each night. 5. Don t drink and drive or let others drink and drive. Whenever anyone drives drunk, they put everyone on the road in danger. 6. Be smoke-free. Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke. There is NO safe amount of tobacco or secondhand smoke. Breathing even a little secondhand smoke can be dangerous. 7. Fasten seat belts while driving or riding in a motor vehicle. Use a seat belt on every trip, no matter how short the trip. 8. Get exams and screenings. Ask your physician what exams you need and when to get them. Update your personal and family history. 9. Get your vaccinations, especially flu and pneumonia shots, which help prevent diseases and save lives. 10. Monitor the clutter in your apartment. Arrange your furniture in an open and easy to get around manner so that you are able to access all areas. 11. Practice fire safety. Most residential fires occur during the winter months so don t leave space heaters, or stoves unattended, don t use candles or overload receptacles. Know your emergency evacuation plan and practice it regularly. 12. Prepare food safely. Remember these simple steps: wash hands and surfaces often, avoid cross-contamination, cook foods to proper temperatures, and refrigerate promptly. 13. Eat healthy, and get moving. Eat fruits and vegetables. Limit your portion sizes and foods high in fat, salt and sugar. Be active for at least 2½ hours a week.

Eugene Doc Tigges The staff and residents of Bell Tower Retirement are sadden by the loss of Doc Tigges. Doc was born December 30, 1931 in Dubuque, IA. Doc passed away Sunday, November 17, We offer our deepest condolences to his wife, Catherine, and his family and friends. Christmas Present Ideas Christmas!! It s that time of year again. The festive season looms large and shoppers are already searching high and low for the all the best deals. Holiday gift-giving is a custom filled with noble intentions that sometimes have the unintended effect of sapping the cheer from shoppers. At Christmas time, we set out to choose gifts that show our affection or appreciation, but the process of knowing who should be on our gift list and what to get them can create stress. It doesn t have to be that way. Keep up the holiday cheer in your gift-giving with these simple items that our residents might need: 1. Household goods - Never underestimate the importance of toilet paper, paper towels, and hand soap. 2. Toiletries - Moisturizing body soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and toothpaste are great items to have when winter zaps the moisture from your skin. 3. Socks - Who couldn t use a few good pairs of socks? 4. Warm winter clothes - You ve all seen the snow already! 5. Blankets - I don t know about the rest of you but I have 4 blankets on my bed.
