That programme is: the BA for Personal and Professional Development at All Hallows College - a part-time, flexible, modular BA that you design from the beginning.

4 All Hallows College All Hallows College is a college of Dublin City University and all degrees are validated and accredited by DCU. This BA programme is an innovative, challenging and exciting degree for adult learners, following an internationally recognised and pioneering model in Adult Education. The principle is simple: adults should not have to sit in a classroom and learn what they already know they should move on to new learning, to what they need to learn. Enhance your Employability This innovative BA programme allows you to take the classes you need, to take those that will enhance your job, promotional or employability opportunities. To tailor your courses to subjects of particular interest to you. And to plan your course of study at your own pace, around your personal and professional circumstances. As a student you will work independently, yet have the support of your own mentor, who will help you design your programme around your own goals. Uniquely, the programme is structured to award credits through achieving Learning Outcomes. These are pre-determined, demonstrable tasks, skills or abilities that develop your knowledge and competency by concentrating on the end result rather than being too focussed on the course content.

5 Take the Credit! Learning happens in many ways, formally and informally, planned and retrospectively, through study and through experience. In this BA, also known as ALBA, the Adult Learning BA, your progression through the course can be accelerated when you display competence in areas of previous educational or experiential learning. It might be completion of a previous college course or the development of a previous knowledge or expertise. It could be the ability to speak a second language. It may be a product of your work a report, a computer programme, an article you ve written. Whatever shape it takes, we have designed methods on the programme whereby you can explain the concepts and how you have used them: giving you credits to get your degree faster.

6 Objectives of the Programme The programme is structured so you can demonstrate Knowledge, Skills and Competence across a range of specific Outcomes established at the outset of the course. The BA degree can be awarded at Level 7 or Level 8 of the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ). It may be possible to exit at an earlier stage with a certificate or diploma. Flexible Pathway With classes on two or three evenings per week and selected weekends, studying between six-nine modules per academic year plus attendance at summer term courses, you may achieve a BA degree within 4-6 years. With previous work and life experience that can be translated into demonstrable items of prior learning, the degree may be completed faster. Credits may be awarded in a number of different ways: 1). Prior Learning you may have achieved 2). Prior Experience in a relevant area 3). Attendance at day and evening classes and 4). Summer term modules in the college 5). Attendance at other modules recognised by the college. Unique Features Applying the principles of the way adults learn, we have included three unique aspects to this programme: 1). Respecting the learner s experience we take account of Prior Experience and Prior Education 2). Focussing on the practical nature of adult learning, we concentrate on specific, measurable Outcomes rather than getting swamped in course content 3). One-to-One support and guidance is provided by the appointment of a personal Mentor

7 Programme Content Meeting the Needs of Working Adults The Programme consists of four Strands: Each strand offers a range of Learning Outcomes. You choose the 9 Learning Outcomes you plan to achieve in each strand. A BA is awarded at level 7 on the achievement of 36 Learning Outcomes. An honours BA is awarded on the achievement of 48 Outcomes.

8 ADULT LEARNING STRAND This strand enables students to develop the skills that support the degree. All students take this strand through nine modules in All Hallows College. Modules: Foundations of Adult Learning 1 Foundations of Adult Learning 2 Scholarly Writing Information Technology Quantitative Reasoning Critical Thinking Collaborative Learning Ethical Acting Summit Seminar By the end of this strand you will have the tools you need for a lifetime of learning, growth and success. HUMAN DEVELOPMENT STRAND This strand covers topics relevant to people and their cultures. Learning Outcomes in this area focus on three categories: Individual Development Outcomes in this category focus on personal growth and change, enabling students to understand and interact more effectively with others. Communities and Societies Outcomes in this category emphasise the ideas and abilities that help individuals thrive in an increasingly independent world. Institutions and Organisations Outcomes in this category help individuals understand and interact with social, cultural, political and economic institutions and organisations.

9 ARTS & IDEAS STRAND This strand addresses the creative and reflective aspects of life. Learning Outcomes in this area come under three categories: Interpreting the Arts Outcomes in this category allow students to relate their own experience to the work of artists, writers and other thinkers. Creative Expression Outcomes in this category encourage students in original creative activities and reflection about the creative process. Reflection and Meaning Outcomes in this category challenge students to explore fundamental questions about the meaning, purpose and values of their lives. PROFESSIONAL FOCUS STRAND The Professional Focus Strand is where you the student take direct ownership of your BA degree programme by choosing an area of particular interest to you to pursue in a very focussed, very concentrated way. You will choose a focus area that will enhance your career prospects. Whatever your area of interest is, your Mentor and the staff will work with you in designing a course of study based on your exact interests and goals. Currently there are six focus areas: Focus Areas: Pastoral Studies Facilitation Studies Business Studies Family Studies Education Community Development

10 Learning and Life go together Meet Your Team At All Hallows College we ll help you design your programme so you can achieve your goals and aspirations for your degree and we ll also provide you with the support system you need to succeed. The key to planning your course of study is your academic committee composed of staff members, a Mentor and you! Together, with your mentor you will assess and design a plan of study to pursue your goals. Perhaps you are planning a brand new career path we ll help you build your study path in the necessary direction. Maybe you want to further develop your skills in a particular area of work we ll help you get there too. Throughout your programme you ll meet and communicate with your Mentor and receive the support and direction you need to see your plan through. Our campus is ideally suited to adult learners, with its comfortable rooms, non-school atmosphere, IT and library facilities, refreshment and relaxation areas and consulting facilities. Central Location Our convenient central location is within easy access of the city centre and the M50 road network; there is ample free parking for students. Accreditation All Hallows College is a college of Dublin City University. The BA for Personal and Professional Development is validated and accredited by DCU. The degree awarded is a Level 7 qualification within the National Framework of Qualifications and for those students who wish to continue to Level 8, an Honours degree.
