Expense Model for CMCI PhD Programs Faculty or instructional support This is the cost of offering courses to PhD students. In general these costs are low for several reasons: None of the PhD programs in CMCI will require new faculty to be hired with teaching responsibilities solely in a PhD program. Many courses taken by PhD students will also be offerings in the various masters programs and those courses have been expensed there. Typically, fully one-half of the credit hours taken by PhD students are thesis or independent study credits for which there is no direct faculty cost. Faculty are expected to (and in fact seek the opportunity to) lead doctoral thesis work over and above normal course loads. Where there is actual expense of faculty course offerings in PhD programs, the counted expense is at the replacement rate of moving faculty from other teaching responsibilities.
Expense Model for CMCI PhD Programs Student support Most CMCI graduate students will be supported through employment in service of the undergraduate programs and thus are as an expense in those programs. Instructional expenses are directly tied to any student fee revenue collected in the PhD programs. Administrative expense This is modeled at 6 percent of overall tuition of each program similar to what CU-Boulder sees in like-sized programs. It is anticipated that much administrative expense will be collectively managed, so, for instance, there might be one graduate program assistant for all of the PhD programs.
Block 3: Information Science Teaching and research on the interface between humans and information systems Collection and analysis of big data and metadata, putting this information to scholarly and public use Explaining the fundamentals of computing in order to teach students how data are generated and organized, and so how to interpret and use them for human purposes

Employment Picture Information Science: Taulbee data indicate students earn jobs in such areas as data analytics, business analytics, systems analytics, program management, product management, user experience designer, information architecture, information assurance and cybersecurity that cross a range of fields, including energy, biology, medicine, safety-critical systems, health and medicine, and transportation. Critical Media Practices: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects a 14% increase in jobs in the motion picture and video industries over the period Governor Hickenlooper has stressed the opportunities for growth in the arts and creative industries. The Denver-Boulder area is now, arguably, the heart of the country s documentary industry. A recent Forbes survey of the 10 most surprising six-figure jobs includes: Multi-media Artists Art Directors Broadcast News Analysts Writers Authors Advertising, Design and Strategic Communication: There is clear evidence in industry publications for a growing demand for employees with the skills that will be provided by this degree. For example, a recent study by Bankrate puts advertising at the top of the list in terms of a degree that offers the best return on investment. Glassdoor.com lists starting average salaries for almost all of the above-mentioned jobs at or above $50,000 a year.
Employment Picture Journalism: University of Georgia annual surveys indicate that more than 50,000 students seek degrees in journalism. 67% of these students are employed within 18 months. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has the same optimistic outlook for media-related work. In a 2011 study of employment trends in media fields, the BLS projected that photographers, producers and directors, writers and authors, and editors are expected to be the largest media-related occupations in Of all the media-related employment sectors, only one was not expected to increase: correspondents for news organizations. Thus it seems that despite continuing layoffs at large news organizations, the occupations related to writing, directing and producing current information as well as fiction will increase as the array of emerging media continues to expand. A recent Forbes survey of the 10 most surprising six-figure jobs includes: Multi-media Artists Art Directors Broadcast News Analysts Writers Authors
Employment Picture Media Studies: Graduates with this degree will be able to find careers and jobs in a wide variety of fields. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects employment in media and communication occupations such as editors, public relations, radio/tv announcers, photographers, technical writers and authors, film and video editors and camera operators, interpreters and translators, to rise by 3% to 15 % in the decade, and employment in the motion picture and video industries to increase by 14%. Media Studies graduates strong conceptual and practical foundation makes them well-suited for a range of careers across the communications, telecommunications, high-tech and creative industries. The fact that Colorado is now a leader in new media industries only bolsters our confidence in being able to place our students. A recent Forbes survey of the 10 most surprising six-figure jobs includes: Multi-media Artists Art Directors Broadcast News Analysts Writers Authors PhD in Intermedia Art, Writing and Performance: These doctoral students will be poised to make the art works of the future. Their education in this unique program will prepare them to take on new kinds of positions with in the academy and industry.
Possible Duplication Issues Four of CMCI s units arise from existing units and degrees. Discussions have been held at CU-Boulder and with other campuses to avoid duplication. Information Science: Different from currently offered degrees in Computer Science at various institutions. As the next image shows, we will have no competitors within 800 miles Critical Media Practices: A unique program that provides a different kind of education from, say, film studies. A new blend of liberal education in critical thinking and practical education in production. Intermedia Art, Writing and Performance: No comparable programs in the state or, really, anywhere
CU-Boulder will have the only ischool within an 800-mile radius

Thank you.
Name Change for Existing Master s Degree Change of name from Master of Science degree in Information and Communication Technology for Development to Master of Science degree in Technology, Media and Society Students in the MS-ICTD program study technology, media and society in the context of the developing world. Renaming the master s degree to MS in Technology, Media and Society will better reflect the curriculum The proposed renaming also will help the program grow in size and stature, given increased interest in this field and better recognition of the new name by prospective students ATLAS Director, Mark Gross, and the faculty implementation committee have recommended and are fully supportive of this name change The curriculum of the degree will remain the same and there will be no costs associated with the proposed change
Action Needed Approve change of name from Master of Science degree in Information and Communication Technology for Development to Master of Science degree in Technology, Media and Society
