1 MODULE SPECIFICATION TEMPLATE SECTION 1: MODULE SPECIFICATIONS 1. Title of the module EL640 Mobile Application Design 2. 2 11. The intended subject specific learning outcomes On successful completion of the module, students will: 1. Be familiar with the different User Interface elements that can be used to construct the application interface on a mobile platform 2. Be able to develop application functionality with an appropriate programming language and SDK. 3. Be familiar with issues concerning privacy and computer security in the context of the digital economy. 4. Understand how XML documents are created and structured and form the basis of new Web applications such as SMIL and SVG. These outcomes contribute to the appropriate programme learning outcomes as follows: MTD/MTDwInd: A2-A4, A6, A9, A10, B2- B5, C1, C2, C4, C5 12. The intended generic learning outcomes On successful completion of the module, students will have improved their skills in the use of information and communication technology. These outcomes are related to the learning outcomes in the appropriate curriculum maps as follows: MTD/ MTDwInd curriculum maps as follows: D1-D2, D5- D7 13. A synopsis of the curriculum Lecture Syllabus MOBILE APP DEVELOPMENT AND DESIGN This course is concerned with the design, implementation and testing of applications for the Android Platform. Students will work at all stages of the development life-cycle from inception to testing, whilst considering usability and device capabilities for a mobile application capable of meeting a functional specification. Key topics include: Android Development Tools (ADT), Eclipse Development Platform. Activities and Intents. Android User Interface: Views and View Groups. Adapting to Display Orientation. UI Notifications. Basic Views, Picker Views, List Views. Using Image Views to Display Pictures. Data Persistence. Content Providers. Interfacing to Web Services. Publishing Android Applications. MOBILE WEB SECURITY Introduction to Computer Security Basic Methods of Security File and Network Security Cryptography, Public Key Cryptography, Digital Signatures Web Based Security, Firewalls WEB APPLICATIONS WITH XML 2

3 Introduction to XML. SGML, XML and Metadata. Creating and structuring XML documents. Using Document Type Definitions (DTD). CSS with XML. XSLT for transforming documents. Working with multiple XSL templates. Case Studies. Coursework APP DEVELOPMENT AND DESIGN Students are asked to design an E-Commerce app for the android platform that sells products of their choice to the consumer. This project will be supported by weekly workshops. Hughes, Addison Wesley, 2003 ISBN Learning and Teaching Methods, including the nature and number of contact hours and the total study hours which will be expected of students, and how these relate to achievement of the intended module learning outcomes There will be 41 contact hours consisting of 23 hours lectures, and 18 hours of workshops. In addition, students will develop an app as a project. They are expected to spend 160 hours researching, developing, implementing and testing their app. Students are also expected to undertake substantial private study relating to the lecture content. The total student workload will be 300 hours. 16. Assessment methods and how these relate to testing achievement of the intended module learning outcomes This module will be assessed 30% by examination and 70% by coursework. The examination will examine students understanding of theoretical concepts underpinning security and XML applications (learning outcomes 4 and 5). Their practical experience in developing an app for the Android platform (learning outcomes 1-3) will be assessed through the project. 17. Within this module we will make reasonable adjustments wherever necessary, including additional or substitute materials, teaching modes or assessment methods for students who have declared and 3

Arrangements for students with declared disabilities will be made on an individual basis, in consultation with the University s disability/dyslexia support service, and specialist support will be provided where needed. 19.
