What is the purpose of a viva? For your examiners, it s an opportunity to check: whether the thesis is your own work whether you understand what you did and can defend your research whether your thesis is worth a PhD (i.e. is an original contribution to knowledge) Research Student Skills Programme
What is the purpose of a viva? For you, it s an opportunity to: Have a detailed conversation about your research with interested, experienced people Defend your decisions; account for any weaknesses Gain valuable feedback Showcase what you ve achieved Research Student Skills Programme
What to expect (normally) HOW LONG? Viva length varies, typically 1 3 hrs WHO ATTENDS? 2 examiners an internal and an external In some departments, an independent Chair or Examinations Advisor Research Student Skills Programme
5 Top Tips 1. Your examiners want you to do well; they will be fair but rigorous. 2. You are the expert in this field so be confident! (Your examiners want you to defend your work. They do not want to defeat you.) 3. Preparation, preparation, preparation. 4. Expect the unexpected. 5. Be well rested. (If you don t know your thesis the night before your viva you never will!) Research Student Skills Programme
Further support Preparing for your viva workshop (book via myadvantage): 4 February, 3pm-5.30pm 16 April, pm 9 June, 10am-12.30pm One-to-one advice from RSSP academic coach Good viva video (via RSSP website) links to advice and resources And finally... Research Student Skills Programme
Examiners Reports Pre-viva: each examiner has to submit an independent report Post-viva: examiners jointly submit a report to the Graduate School with a recommendation Joint and independent reports are sent to the Chair of the Faculty Graduate Studies Committee for approval Once approved, the Graduate School will inform you in writing (note that if minor corrections are required this will usually be communicated to you by your examiners at the end of the viva)
Possible outcome of viva Degree be Awarded No further action required congratulations! Minor Corrections (up to three months) Checked by Internal Examiner or nominated External Examiner Resubmission (up to twelve months) Major revisions needed. Examiners consider and can opt for re-viva. Expect the same examiners. Award Lower Degree MPhil or MRes. May be asked to make minor corrections to achieve this level. Right to appeal against examiners judgment not on academic grounds. Rare! No Degree be Awarded Recommendation only to be made when thesis cannot reach any level within 12 months. Very, very rare!
Once examinations process concluded Submit 1 x hard bound copy of thesis and 1 x CD with PDF to Student Reception Bind Library Declaration form into thesis before title page Only once both hard copy of thesis and CD received will you be placed on pass list Pass lists are considered by Steering Committee (Senate) fortnightly. Outside of term time less frequently Conferral letters normally sent to students on Tuesdays If in debt then conferral letter not sent until debt is paid off Graduation invite letter sent nearer to the ceremony Cut-off date for Summer Graduation pass list is still to be confirmed likely to be mid-june 2015
