3 College Viewbook 2010 Our Mission Is You! Whether you ve known about us all your life, or you ve just recently heard of us, we re glad you re here. GTCC is a place where you can find your spot, walk new paths, and create your future. We know that college is challenging whether you re just returning to school from another life venture or you ve just graduated from high school. We also know that finding the time and money for school can be tough. At GTCC, we try to make it easier. We have many faculty and staff who are willing to help you through the challenges those who staff Financial Aid, the Counseling Center, the Speaking Center, the Writing Center, Cooperative Work Experiences, Academic Advising and others. Of course, we don t want your time at GTCC to be all work. College is also about your experiences as a student, and our active student government works hard to create great student experiences. You ll also have the chance to make your voice heard through participation in any of our 30 different student clubs and organizations. 4 Guilford Technical Community College GTCC is Affordable You can afford an education at GTCC. You shouldn t hesitate to apply for admission to GTCC because the cost seems more than you can manage. Financial aid is available to those who qualify, and GTCC s Financial Aid office will be happy to help you identify grants, work-study programs, loans and scholarships for which you may be eligible. Many of our programs also provide co-op opportunities where you can work in your field of study for course credit and pay. Tuition Rates In-state tuition $66.50 per credit hour Out-of-state $ per credit hour Please note: Tuition and fees are subject to change without notice. Why GTCC? Answer: GTCC will get you going places! GTCC is an affordable, diverse, and highly regarded community college. We are the third largest community college in North Carolina and we offer over 100 programs of study within our academic curriculum. We have three convenient campuses, an aviation center, a small business center, and we are currently under construction on the newest campus in Oak Ridge. GTCC strives for academic excellence and our graduates are living proof of that! Fees & Insurance All students must pay a campus access, parking, and security fee (CAPS Fee) each semester. Students enrolled in a course with shop/ lab or clinic hours will have to pay a shop/lab/clinic fee. This fee varies by academic program. Also some programs require Malpractice Insurance. There are also fees associated with applying for a certificate, applying for graduation, and obtaining official copies of your transcripts. Please see the current GTCC General Catalog or the GTCC website for more information and current rates for tuition and fees. So whether you want to start working towards a bachelors degree or learn how to fix an airplane engine GTCC can help you achieve your dreams. These college transfer programs give you the foundation you need to pursue a bachelor s degree in the field of study you choose. These programs are guaranteed to transfer to any college within the UNC System, giving you junior status once you complete the Associate Degree Program at GTCC. From college transfer programs such as Pre-Major Business Administration and Pre-Major Engineering to non-transfer programs such as Advertising & Graphic Design, the Division of Arts & Sciences gives students a well-rounded education and an opportunity to explore many fields of study. The goal of the division is to support students of all interests helping them obtain the goals they have set forth to achieve. 10 Guilford Technical Community College DIVISIoN of I.C.E.T Industrial, Construction & Engineering Technologies Imagine a classroom that has no walls, that puts what you learn into action through hands-on training. Now imagine a construction site. You ve just entered into one of the classrooms of the ICET Division. From the initial design stages to the plumbing and construction of cabinets to the landscaping of the yard and installation of the HVAC unit, ICET students have constructed homes from the ground up. ICET students get real world training and valuable experience that you could not get in a textbook, giving them a competitive advantage in today s job market. So if you are interested in architecture, engineering, furniture upholstery, welding, plumbing, machining, or turfgrass management, the ICET Division is right for you! We have state-of-theart equipment and highly trained and skilled faculty. We are ready to prepare you for an exciting career in a variety of medical fields. We offer degrees in nursing, medical assisting, dental hygiene, pharmacy technology, healthcare management, physical therapist assistant and surgical technology to name a few. The possibilities in the medical field are endless and our graduates are in high demand. Whether you want to work in a hospital, side by side with a dentist, or as a manager in a healthcare facility, the Health Sciences Division at GTCC can get you started on the right track in two years or less. Learn to work on airplane engines, get flight training to become a pilot, or learn the business side of things through aviation management. Not interested in the sky? No problem! GTCC can still put you on the road to success in no time by jumpstarting your career in Automotive, Collision Repair, or Heavy Equipment Transport Technologies. Want to learn from the best? 14 Guilford Technical Community College Basic Skills If you did not finish high school, GTCC offers classes in Basic Skills that can get you on your way to a high school diploma and into one of our degree programs. In addition to classes in Adult Basic Education, GTCC also offers compensatory education for those with learning disabilities as well as English for speakers of other languages. To find out what direction you should go, we encourage you to speak to a counselor on any campus. Developmental Education If you are worried about how to write a paper or if it has been awhile since you did word problems that use x and y, don t worry! Our developmental education division is prepared to give you the foundation you need to begin your college career.
