3 Welcome to ESEP Dear student, The nursing degree course guide that we now present has the intention of welcome you to become a student at Escola Superior de Enfermagem do Porto (ESEP). Our School is an institution dedicated to the education in nursing at undergraduate and post-graduate levels. ESEP is a place where one learns a nursing that is more relevant for people and to be interventive in the processes of caring in health. From our antient past emerged an institution that is linked to the community, making us a reference in teaching and research in nursing. 4 1. Life in Porto The city Known as the capital of the north, Porto is Portugal s second largest city and an industrial centre, with an atmosphere of unpretentious charm. Modern Porto is as much a cosmopolitan centre as it is a city steeped in the historical events of the past. Perched on the steep slopes of the River Douro, the granite city is best known for its striking bridges and the much celebrated Port wine, appreciated by wine lovers all over the world. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 1996, the ancient Ribeira riverside district is a warren of narrow and twisting streets. The ongoing restoration of this lively quarter is attracting a growing number of restaurants, bars and nightclubs.

5 Places to visit Porto has one of the richest artistic, cultural and historical heritages in Portugal. Porto was also chosen as a European Capital of Culture in 2001 and is proud of its large number of churches, monuments and museums that represent one of the most important stages in the historical development of the city and even of the country.

6 2. Escola Superior de Enfermagem do Porto (ESEP) Nursing School of Porto Portugal ESEP is a place where one learns a nursing that is more relevant for people and to be interventive in the processes of caring in health.

7 History ESEP is a non integrated polytechnic higher education institution, dedicated to the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate nursing sciences located in Porto, Portugal. It was created in the 1st of January 2007 and it is the result of the merging process of three other higher education nursing institutions in Porto, namely: Escola Superior de Enfermagem de D. Ana Guedes, Escola Superior de Enfermagem Cidade do Porto and Escola Superior de Enfermagem São João. The remote origin of ESEP, at the service of nursing education, remounts to 15th June 1896, date, in which the nursing diploma course was created at the Hospital Geral de Santo António, and is one of the countries first nursing schools. This day is celebrated as ESEP official school day. Keeping up with technical and caring developments of the mid 20th century, in 1954 the first public school in nursing was created in Porto and, more recently, in 1983, a new school emerges, focusing on specialised nursing training. The past three schools originate the Escola Superior de Enfermagem do Porto (ESEP), which consequently took advantage of what each school had of best to offer. It enabled the construction of an innovative school, opened to the community and today, it is a reference in what concerns nursing education and research.

8 Mission Identity Escola Superior de Enfermagem do Porto (ESEP) identifies itself as a public higher education institution with distinctive elements at a national and international level in what concerns excellence of nursing education and in the creation, communication and dissemination of culture, of knowledge and of science and technology through articulated study, education and research. ESEP mission statement consists of providing nursing education at degree level, as well as other training programs and oriented skill development in the nursing field. Parallel to this incumbency, ESEP mission statement also focuses the promotion of research and development programs that generate both, new disciplinary knowledge and health innovation. In this sense, and in the search for maximum effectiveness in its action, ESEP strategically promotes the articulation with other organizations and with national and international networks.

9 3. Nursing Bachelor - first cycle Curso de Licenciatura em Enfermagem (CLE) The syllabus is structured into two biennium s, the first integrates theoretical curriculum units and the second, clinical practice and training curriculum units, in a total sum of 240 credits (ECTS) (6.000 work hours). The curriculum units are semestrial and are constituted by theoretical classes and seminars with optional class attendance, theoretical and practical lessons, laboratory practice, tutorial orientation, clinical practice and compulsory practice attendance. The credits attributed to each curriculum unit correspond to the number of hours of total work spent by the student. The number of contact hours in each curriculum unit refers to the hours the student was present in the classroom. All curriculum hours are subjected to continuous, periodical or final evaluation (General System Evaluations, Attendance and Enrolment in the Curso de Licenciatura em Enfermagem Regulation). At the end of each school year there is a recourse and special examination period. To be able to write these exams, the student must hand in an exam request, until 72 hours, after the examination results have been displayed. At the end of each semester, there is a final examination period which includes the normal exams. The final classification of each curriculum unit, which is equal to or bigger than ten points, means, that the student achieved a pass mark. After being attributed the professional title of a registered nurse, by the Order of Nurses, they are then entitled to exercise nursing functions. The Curso de Licenciatura em Enfermagem enables students to apply to the 2nd cycle of studies (Master Degree).

14 5. Mobility Erasmus+ mobility ERASMUS+ program is the biggest initiative of student exchange in the world. More than a million students have already participated. This program is opened to all host universities. All higher education students may participate in the ERASMUS+ program, through the establishment of a previous agreement between the institutions involved. The students can apply just as long as they are enrolled in the 3rd or 4th year (Nursing degree course), and must apply until the end of March of each school year previous to the mobility period. Students must apply to a vacancy available in the bilateral agreements held by their institutions. Master degree courses students (2nd cycle) can also apply to a mobility period. The curriculum units attended in the scope of mobility must be credited in the respective curriculum unit of ESEP course, entirely in ECTS. Before the mobility period to ESEP, students must attend to portuguese language classes since all classes and clinical training are held in portuguese. Vasco da Gama mobility The Vasco da Gama program is a student exchange initiative between schools of Applied Sciences. The mobility period may be semestrial or annual and can be done in any other school belonging to another national Higher Education Polytechnic. All higher education students that have concluded the 2nd year, can participate in the Vasco da Gama Program, through the establishment of a previous agreement between the institutions involved. The mobility is subject to approval of the syllabus defined by the school of origin and by the host school.
