IMPORTANT DATES/DEADLINES TO REMEMBER December March 2009 Applications are available at area high school guidance offices and the Santa Fe College Web site, March 6, 2009 Deadline to submit applications to your high school guidance office or the Santa Fe College Office for Development, RAB-207 on the Northwest Campus. Health Related scholarship applications must be submitted to the Health Sciences Scholarship Committee, W-002 on the Northwest Campus. April 2009 The SFC Foundation Scholarship Committee meets and awards scholarships. May 1, 2009 Scholarship selection results will be posted outside the Foundation office. Scholarship recipients are notified via mail. Scholarships awarded to high school students are distributed at each high school awards ceremony. 3 SCHOLARSHIP PROCESS AND GENERAL REQUIREMENTS REQUIREMENTS 10GENERAL 1 Enroll at Santa Fe College. 2 Alachua or Bradford County resident (unless otherwise stated on scholarship announcement). 3 High School diploma or GED. 4 High School or postsecondary GPA 2.0 (unless otherwise stated on scholarship announcement). 5 Plan to enroll as a full-time student (12 credit hours per term). 6 A 100 word essay describing career goals and benefits of receiving a scholarship. 7 Scholarships are nontransferable. 8 Students can receive only one scholarship award per academic year. 9 Scholarships are applied to the academic year awarded. 10 Thank you notes must be received before award is posted for payment. SCHOLARSHIP PROCESS The Santa Fe College Foundation offers a variety of scholarships to students graduating from Alachua and Bradford counties and all other students entering SFC. Eligibility requirements vary depending on the degree of study and the scholarships selected. Foundation scholarships are based on scholastic achievement, special talent or financial aid, depending on the specific scholarship criteria. Scholarships are considered part of the student s financial aid package and must be reported to the Financial Aid office. Students may apply for a maximum of three (3) scholarships as long as they meet the established criteria. Scholarship applicants must have a minimum 2.0 GPA unless otherwise noted on the scholarship announcement. An academic transcript must be attached to the application form. If college GPA is unavailable, high school transcripts must be provided. Completed applications may either be mailed, hand delivered to one of the campus locations, or submitted from the college Web site INCOMPLETE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION PACKETS WILL NOT BE PROCESSED. Applications are available on Santa Fe s Web site and at Alachua and Bradford county high schools. Scholarship awards vary from $1,000 to $1,600 per academic year payable during the fall and spring terms. Scholarship recipients must meet all scholarship requirements to receive the scholarship award. Student must be enrolled as a full-time student (minimum 12 credit hours each semester), successfully complete 24 credit hours per academic year, and maintain the appropriate grade point average (see individual scholarship announcement). Part-time students may be eligible for specific awards. A student who is chosen to receive a scholarship award from the Foundation will receive an award letter announcing the type and amount of award offered, as well as specific scholarship information, responsibilities, and the criteria for that scholarship award. The Santa Fe College Foundation Scholarship Committee reserves the right to make final scholarship decisions. PROCEDURE FOR OBTAINING A SCHOLARSHIP 1. Students must apply for admission to the college. Any student new to SFC should begin at the Welcome Center in R-112. Upon acceptance, students receive an appointment for orientation and registration for the fall term. Students who fail to enroll in the fall 2009 term forfeit their scholarship award and it is automatically canceled. For questions or help, contact the Office for Development, RAB-207, or call Fees are automatically deducted from an award when a student registers for classes. Any balance owed must be paid at the cashier s window, RAB-52, by the published deadline; otherwise the courses will be dropped. If there is a balance remaining after fees are deducted, a balance check will be mailed to the address on file with the Records and Admissions office. Checks will not be mailed to students who owe an obligation to the college or have a financial aid hold on their records. Charles W. Satisfactory academic progress is required for the award to remain intact for the next term. Students who complete zero credits/hours will be denied further aid. 8 HOW AND WHEN TO APPLY SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS Step 1 Enroll at Santa Fe College. Step 2 Provide evidence of financial need, if applicable. Step 3 Read the scholarship criteria. Step 4 Complete the scholarship application. Step 5 Include a short essay. Complete application for enrollment at Santa Fe College. Scholarships that are based on financial need require that you submit a FAFSA prior to the scholarship application deadline. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid can be found at A printed copy of your EFC score or SAR is required. The funding for Federal Loans and Grants is limited and the date you apply could impact the amount of aid you might receive. You should submit your FAFSA as soon after January 1 as possible. Read all of the criteria listed for each scholarship to determine if you qualify, and review the scholarship(s) for any additional requirements. Fill out the enclosed application completely. You may also print the application from the Foundation Web page at Make sure your application is typed or neatly printed with black or blue ink. One application per year will be accepted and you may apply for a maximum of three (3) scholarships. A complete application contains the application form, FAFSA printout of EFC score or SAR transaction (if required), short essay, transcripts and letter of recommendation (if required). Include a short essay with your application. The essay is required and should be at least 100 words long. Please list your educational and career goals and tell how you have helped your family or made your community a better place to live in, and the benefits of receiving a scholarship. Step 6 Include two references. Provide the names of two individuals who are willing to be contacted as references for you. Academic or professional references are preferable. Please list phone numbers for each reference and identify their relationship to you. Step 7 Provide high school/college transcripts. A. If you are currently in high school or have graduated from high school, provide your high school transcript. B. If you have completed a GED or received a high school diploma through an alternative program, please submit proof of this completion along with your scholarship application. C. If you have completed college work at Santa Fe or transferred to Santa Fe from another institution, please provide your college transcripts. Step 8 Return the scholarship application by the deadline. Return the completed application packet to the Santa Fe College Foundation office by 4:30 p.m. on March 6, Applications received by the Foundation after the deadline will be disqualified. Postmarks will not be accepted. Step 9 Mail required materials. 11 I APPLIED FOR A SCHOLARSHIP. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? Step 1 Results are posted Selection results for all scholarships will be posted outside the Foundation office after May 1. The Foundation office is located on the Northwest Campus in the Robertson Administration Building, room 207, 3000 NW 83rd Street, Gainesville, Florida. PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE FOUNDATION OFFICE FOR RESULTS! Step 2 Official notification Official notification letters will be mailed by May 1 along with confirmation requests. You must return the completed confirmation request with a thank you note to the donor of your scholarship no later than August 10 to the following address: Santa Fe College Foundation 3000 NW 83rd Street, RAB-207 Gainesville, FL Confirmation letters will only be mailed to students who have been awarded scholarships. If your name is not on the list posted outside the Foundation office, you have not been awarded a scholarship. All scholarship recipients will receive a confirmation letter by the end of May. We do not send results to students who have not received scholarships. The Foundation office has a separate database, so updating your contact information through the college does not update our records. I received a scholarship, but the money is not in my student account. Scholarship money will be applied to student accounts no later than August 10 provided the confirmation request and thank you letter have been received. I will be receiving a scholarship, but I have special circumstances that I would like to have considered. If you are requesting any exception to disbursement of your scholarship, please contact the Foundation office. All requests must be submitted in writing and are evaluated individually. How will I receive my scholarship award? Fees are automatically deducted from an award when a student registers for classes. Any balance owed must be paid at the cashier s window, RAB-52, by the published deadline; otherwise the courses will be dropped. If there is a balance remaining after fees are deducted, a balance check will be mailed to the address on file with the Records and Admissions office. Checks will not be mailed to students who owe an obligation to the college or have a financial aid hold on their records. STEPS REQUIRED TO FINALIZE A SCHOLARSHIP AWARD If you are selected as a scholarship recipient, these steps must be followed to receive your award. Step 1 Return confirmation letter and send thank you note. Step 2 Maintain your enrollment status! Return the confirmation letter along with required thank you note addressed to the donor no later than August 10 to the Foundation office. If you fail to do this, your scholarship will be forfeited. Maintain specific enrollment status as indicated by the criteria of the scholarship awarded, and make satisfactory academic progress in order for the award to remain intact for the next term. If you are selected for a scholarship and will not meet the required enrollment status for any term covered by the award, you must contact the Foundation office in a timely manner. 11
