3 Definition: HL7 International Health Level Seven International (HL7) is the global authority on standards for interoperability of health information technology with members in over 55 countries. HL7 is a Standard Developing Organization accredited by the ANSI to create consensus-based standards.

4 HL7 International History Founded in 1987, HL7 is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing a comprehensive standards for the exchange, integration and sharing of electronic health information. HL7's 2,300+ members include approximately 500 corporate members who represent more than 90% of the information systems vendors serving healthcare.

6 What is Working Group? Members of Health Level Seven International are known collectively as the Working Group, which is organized into individual work groups. The work groups are directly responsible for the content of our Products. Work groups can also serve as a source for exploring new areas that need to be covered by HL7 International s published standards.

9 HL7 International Meetings Working Group Meetings occur three times a year. January, May and September September meeting is designated as plenary meeting. Most (if not all) of the HL7 International work groups have face-to-face meetings during a working group meeting.

10 HL7 International Meetings Work Groups set agendas for the next meeting at the end of the last meeting. Work Groups have defined decision making processes that specify; how they run meetings, debate and vote on issues discussed in a meetings. Every Work Group has a Co-chair.

17 Standard Localization To refine existing or define new messages fulfilling local requirements. Examples: Incorporating CNIC in HL7 messages. Restricting more refined Lab Result message. Development local implementation guide for discharge summary Clinical Document Architecture (CDA).

18 HL7 Pakistan: Work Groups Establishing WGs to localize messages and participate internationally in HL7 standards. In current requirements we need; HL7 Training and Education WG. HL7 Certification WG. HL7 V3 Messaging WG HL7 RIMBAA WG HL7 EHR/PHR WG

19 HL7 RIMBAA WG RIMBAA look into RIM base application NUST SEECS has already developed RIM based middleware. As HL7 is emerging in Pakistan, so future implementation can be RIM based and can be discussed in this group.

20 Conclusion Healthcare like other industries needs integration For integration we need standardization HL7 is the leading standard for healthcare information exchange and integration We need a nation-wide policy to adopt standards HL7 Pakistan is already in placed Participation and contribution in local WGs will uplift our local health industry to international level.

21 HL7 EHR/PHR WG Nation wide EHR initiative is the need of the day. This group will look into the implementation of EHR based on HL7 EHR Functional model. It will also look into PHR in international prospective. NUST SEECS has planning PHR for Smart Cards.
