2 Welcome! Welcome to the DMACC Nursing Programs! Adjunct faculty are an important part of the educational process for both our PN and AD Nursing students. We are so pleased that you have decided to join us and contribute to the quality educational experiences we offer to all of our students. There are several orientation requirements that must be completed prior to the time that you begin teaching with us: 1. Complete all HR and Nursing Program hiring requirements 2. On-line Adjunct Faculty Orientation Course: A preceptor will help you access this orientation program and will be available to answer questions. Your preceptor is an experienced faculty member in our Program and will serve as a mentor to you during the time that you are working with us. She will provide you with her contact information so that you will also have a resource person if needed during your clinical hours. You will find this to be an ongoing resource during your teaching time at DMACC. 3. Meet with the lead instructor for the course.: At this meeting you will be given specific course and clinical information. All clinical and course faculty may be involved in part of this meeting as faculty collaborate to ensure consistent course and clinical expectations for students. You will want to have ongoing contact with the lead instructor throughout the course with questions and updates regarding student clinical performance. The lead instructor will be contacting you to set up a time for this initial meeting. 4. Orient yourself to the clinical facility (and them to you) 5. Complete and return the Agency Minutes, Materials Agreement and the Certificate of Completion. 3 DMACC Adjunct Nursing Faculty Orientation Welcome! We re so glad that you are joining us! In order to help prepare you better for the role of nursing instructor, we have prepared an orientation for you to complete prior to the start of your teaching assignment. This orientation includes specific information about DMACC, faculty and student policies with which you need to be familiar, information specific to the Nursing program, as well as essential information for the nurse who is now adding the role of nurse educator. Please read this and complete the following in order to orient yourself to DMACC, the Nursing Program, and the teaching /learning environment. We ask that you complete the orientation prior to starting your teaching assignment. Feel free to call anyone of us if you have questions or concerns about your teaching assignment, evaluation of students, or any part of your clinical day or teaching assignment. Have a great semester with us! So let s get started! I. Complete all HR/Nursing hiring requirements including: Receive, complete and return HR hiring packet materials: Be sure all forms are filled out accurately and completely to expedite the arrival of your first paycheck. Transcripts on file: An original copy must be sent to Director, Nursing Education IA Nursing license: Copy of current, unencumbered license submitted to Director, Nursing Education CPR: Copy of current card turned in to Director, Nursing Education Faculty Health Form: completed and submitted Immunizations: completed and proof of same submitted Influenza vaccine: proof of vaccination required prior to each spring semester Mandatory Reporter of Child and Adult Abuse Training: current, proof of same submitted Bloodborne Pathogen Training: proof of completion within the past year submitted Right to Know training completed and proof submitted Receive and familiarize yourself with the Nursing Student Policy Manual : focus particularly on clinically oriented sections; be familiar with grading policies, attendance policies, etc. DMACC Instructor Name tag ordered: connect with Program Chair, Program Coordinator or Campus Coordinator to have name tag ordered with preferred name and credentials 3

4 II. Complete all sections of Adjunct Orientation Course. Once you have received a DMACC e- mail address, you may access the entire course via WebCT. Until then you will be able to access the first four units of the course on the DMACC Nursing website found at: We encourage you to continue to use both the website and the WebCT course as a resource when questions arise: To access WebCT: 1. Got to DMACC home page 2. Click on Login at the upper right hand corner of the page 3. Go to Faculty and click on WebCT 4. Click on Login and sign in using your DMACC and password 5. Click on Adjunct Nursing Orientation Course and begin course. 6. Note that you will need to access the Learning Modules tab on the left in order to complete the Learning Modules portion of the orientation. Once in WebCT you must read each of the following units: 1. Welcome 2. Introduction to DMACC 3. Essential Faculty/Student Policies 4. Nursing Program Overview 5. Learning Modules: a. Unit 1 - Overview for the Clinical Nurse Educator b. Unit 2 - Going to Clinical i. Instructor s Orientation to the Clinical Setting ii. Instructional Skills for Clinical Practice iii. The Clinical Day c. Unit 3 Understanding Why We Do What We Do i. Why we do what we do theoretical background ii. Facilitating Student Learning d. Unit 4 Evaluation Strategies e. Unit 5 Legal Considerations f. Unit 6 Concept mapping 6. Access the folder on the WebCT Homepage for the Campus at which you will be teaching: a. Find the course you will be teaching and click on that icon b. Under this folder you should find specific documents and forms that should be helpful to you as you interact with the unit, as well as teach and evaluate students. 4

5 III. Meet with lead course instructor for: Course Information and Teaching Assignment A. Course Syllabus, Handouts, Forms & Tools- adjunct given copies Course Overview and schedule need to review course and clinical objectives. Clinical Assignment students and unit B. Textbooks Needs/sources Sign out sheet (Materials Agreement found in Welcome packet) Return textbooks and other DMACC materials at end of semester C. Cooperating Agencies Physical facilities of unit to which faculty person is assigned Unit specific orientation Key personnel Policies/Routines Agency Minutes - Planning Meeting and Minutes use specific format and return to lead instructor preferably as attachment via . Agency Policy Manual D. Student Learning and Evaluation Testing Projects & assignments E. Student Clinical Orientation Parking Charting Computer access Medication systems F. Student clinical expectations Appropriate for level Attendance reporting Time frames Course specific forms G. Student Evaluation Practicum Evaluation Tool Summative evaluation dates/process Final Course Evaluation dates/process Final Program Evaluation dates/process Student Action Report (SAR) when is appropriate and what is the process Student class or clinical referrals o Nursing Resource Lab (for assist with skills, safety, concept mapping) o Course faculty, Program Chair/Coordinator, Counselor o Academic Achievement Center H. Faculty Illness or absence report to Lead Faculty/Program Chair/Campus Coordinator I. Communication with course lead faculty J. Department Meetings invited, but not required K. Incident Reporting Anytime that a facility incident report is completed, faculty and students must also complete a DMACC Incident Report. To submit a DMACC Incident Report: Go to the DMACC home page. In the top middle of the page, find the box DMACC Quick Links pull down. Click on the down arrow pull down, scroll down to the Incident Report form. You are not actually required to insert your birth date, age, etc. Complete the report, check the box at bottom, and click on the Submit report. You must print a copy before sending by right click within the form. If you need to make corrections after you ve sent the report on, you may call the phone number listed at the bottom. DO NOT INCLUDE PATIENT DATA; USE AN INITIAL/ROOM NUMBER, BUT NOT IDENTIFYING INFORMATION ON THE DMACC FORM! Please inform lead faculty person immediately A copy of the incident report must be submitted to the Program Chair/Coordinator within 5 days. 5

6 IV. Orient self to clinical area: Schedule a time to orient to the unit with the manager of the unit. Provide the manager with a clinical schedule which you can obtain from the theory instructor. Physical facilities Introduction to personnel Policies/routines/charting Cooperating Agency Manual Share student names/schedules/your contact information Schedule a time to meet with the manager of the unit and discuss any important things you should know about their unit. This is also a time to let them know anything special about how the clinical day will go. After this meeting, complete an Agency Minutes form and to lead instructor (see Agency Minutes). Arrange where Cooperating Agency Manual will be kept receive from lead instructor You may want to schedule some time to follow a staff nurse around so that you are familiar with this unit. V. Return Cooperating Agency Minutes by to lead faculty/designated contact person See attached VI. VII. Sign and return Materials Agreement for Clinical Faculty See attached Sign and return Certificate of Completion prior to start of assignment. See attached 6

8 DES MOINES AREA COMMUNITY COLLEGE NURSING PROGRAM Ankeny Campus SAMPLE ONLY Meeting: Cooperating Agency Minutes for Methodist Hospital N3 Date/Time/Location: Jan. 6, 2009 at 1330 on N3 Present: Kathy Quick, Manager, Diane VanGorp, Supervisor, Beth Warrick, Clinical Instructor Level of students and rotation dates and times Charting, documentation and paperwork assignments Physical plant: Lockers/security of belongings; parking; cafeteria usage, conference rooms; smoking restrictions Unit specific: Posting assignments; reporting on and off; handling concerns relating to students or staff; identifying skills, meds, treatments students will or will not do while on unit Unit specific skills and orientation for instructor Policies for instructor or student absence or illness DMACC Cooperating Agency Manual Discussion / Decisions A list of Students names was shared with the dates for rotations for January 16, 2009 through March 27, These students are in the last semester of the second year of the nursing program. Practicum times are from 7:00 a.m. 3 p.m. with a half-hour pre-conference and an hour post-conference on Thursdays and Fridays while in ADN551. Data collection time for the students will be on Wednesday s beginning at 1:30pm. Students are to wear nice street clothes, lab coats, and name tags. (Must have Methodist name tag on). Students will document on hard copy forms in the medical record and document on the computer their assessments, all flowsheets and medications. Students will be completing care plans and teaching plans on assigned patients in ADN551. In ADN551 students will also be completing a leadership component with assigned peers and clients. Students will have access to Pyxis and chart medications according to IHS policy. Students have IDs from previous rotations at IHS. Students will park in the lots south of the hospital. Students can use the cafeteria or other eating areas. Students have been educated on the smoke-free campus. The cardiac education room will be used for pre and post conferences as available. Belongings will be kept to a minimum and stored in the locker room. Students are to receive report from their co-assigned nurses and report off to the same. Students assignments will be posted at the nurses station. Students will give meds to assigned patients. Skills the students need are: SQ and IM injections, enemas, IV monitoring, IVPBs, IV pushes, tube feedings, catheterizations, NG insertions, central line cares, IV starts, and sterile trach care and suctioning. Students will not do glucometer check per request of diabetic nurse for quality control. Any concerns of the staff are to be shared by the staff as they occur. The instructor will share student concerns with the unit director or appropriate staff person. Instructor has previously been oriented to N3. Students will call in their absences to their clinical instructor by 6 a.m. Instructor illness will result in practicum being cancelled. The instructor will notify the staff. If the instructor is late because of weather, the staff will be notified. Students are not to give patient care until the instructor arrives. DMACC cancellation of classes will be announced on the radio and TV stations. The instructor will verify that staff are aware of the cancellation. Contents of manual, including DMACC Nursing Program philosophy, curriculum design, outcomes, student policies and current course syllabi and student evaluation tools will be kept on the nursing unit in a folder at the secretary s desk.
