1 Nagoya University International Programs for 2014 Intake Admission Requirements for Undergraduate Students (October Admission) Nagoya University invites students (international students and Japanese returnees) to apply for its International Programs (English-based degree programs) for 2014 intake, according to the terms and conditions below. Admission Policy Please refer to the University's General Admission Policy on the Nagoya University website at: I. Eligibility for Application The applicant must satisfy one of the requirements below to be eligible to apply for Nagoya University's International Programs. 1. International student: The applicant is a non-japanese citizen and not a permanent resident of Japan, and falls under one of the classifications (i to iii) below: i. The applicant must have received education primarily in a language other than Japanese for at least two years during the last three years of his/her secondary education, and must fall under one of the classifications (a - e) below: a. The applicant has completed a 12-year curriculum in an education institution based on a foreign country s education system *1 (including any period spent in education in a regular course of study in Japan), is expected to complete the curriculum before September 30, 2014, or has completed an equivalent education program that has been designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. *2 b. The applicant has acquired the International Baccalaureate qualification awarded by the International Baccalaureate Organization, a non-profit foundation established in accordance with the Civil Code of Switzerland, and will be at least 18 years old on September 30, c. The applicant has an Abitur, recognized as a qualification for enrolling in a university in the states of the Federal Republic of Germany, and will be at least 18 years old on September 30, d. The applicant has a Baccalauréat, recognized as a qualification for enrolling in a university in the Republic of France, and will be at least 18 years old on September 30, e. The applicant has completed, or is expected to complete, a 12-year education curriculum by September 30, 2014 in a school certified by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) headquartered in California, USA, the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) headquartered in Colorado, USA, or the European Council of International Schools (CIS) headquartered in Hampshire, UK, and will be at least 18 years old by September 30, 2014 (Appendix 1). 1

The applicant must have passed a recognized test/examination to determine whether he/she possesses academic ability equivalent or superior to that obtained from a 12-year curriculum in a foreign country s education system, and will be at least 18 years old on September 30, * The applicant who falls under category ii of eligibility must submit scores from one of the standardized or national examinations (Appendix 3), in addition to meeting all the application requirements in section II. iii. The applicant who does not fall under any of the provisions of eligibility in i to ii must have attained a level of academic ability equivalent to or higher than that of a high school graduate, which is recognized in an individual eligibility review process conducted by Nagoya University, and will be at least 18 years old by September 30, *3 (The applicant must have received education primarily in a language other than Japanese for at least two years during the last three years of his/her secondary education.) Notes: 1 The 12-year curriculum refers to the 12-year system of elementary and secondary education prior to university admission, the completion of which is recognized as a qualification for admission to a university in that country. Notes: 2 The phrase "designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology" includes the following individuals: a. Those who have attained a high school qualification or equivalent in another country or have completed a preparatory education course for university entrance in Japan as prescribed by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and who will be at least 18 years old by September 30, 2014 b. Individuals who have completed a foreign education equivalent to a Japanese high school education (with 12 years of formal education completed in a foreign country) at an institution located in Japan and recognized under the educational system of that country, and who will be at least 18 years old by September 30, 2014 (For details, please see X. Inquiries below) Notes: 3 Any applicant who wishes to apply under the provision of eligibility iii above must contact the Admissions Office, International Programs at the Nagoya University International Exchange and Cooperation Headquarters, preferably one month prior to the respective application deadline of each round, and he/she must complete the required application procedures. 2. Returnees: The applicant is a Japanese citizen or has Permanent Residence status and fulfills the same eligibility requirements as those for international students outlined in 1 above. 2

3 II. Application Requirements In addition to the Eligibility for Application mentioned in section I above, the applicant must meet all the following requirements: 1. The applicant must have demonstrated excellent academic achievement in high school. Recommended score: Higher than B grade average (A-F scale) / 3.0 GPA (1-4 scale) / 82% / total score of 30 points in IB If the applicant s high school uses a different grading system to those above, he/she must have earned a satisfactory academic result according to the system used. In such cases, the applicant must also submit a grading scale reference. 2. Any applicant who graduated from a high school where classes are provided in a primary language other than English must satisfy one of the requirements outlined in Appendix 2. However, an applicant who has received 4 years of education in a junior or senior high school in which English is the primary language of instruction is exempted from this requirement. (Applicants seeking this exemption must show proof of their English language proficiency by indicating their educational background on the Application Form.) Examples of major English Language certifications in Appendix 2: a. TOEFL: minimum score of 80 on the ibt; 213 on the CBT; or 550 on the PBT b. IELTS: minimum band score of 6 or above 3

Selection Criteria In order to nurture future global leaders by enabling learning in a diverse environment, Nagoya University employs a comprehensive selection approach that considers the following academic and non-academic criteria: 1. Academic performance in high school 2. Test Scores of national exams or other standardized tests (see Appendix 4) 3. Outstanding performance in academic subject areas 4. Outstanding work on a special project in a field related to an academic subject 5. List of subjects and grades for courses taken related to Japanese language and culture 6. Special talents, achievements, and awards 7. Content of essays 8. Evaluation on interview performance V. Application Procedure 1. (1) At Nagoya University, the additional selection of applicants that may occur if quotas were not filled during early admission and the first and second rounds of admission is called "Rolling Admission."

7 (2) Each applicant may only apply once for the same intake, regardless of program and admission round. Multiple applications are not allowed. (3) There will be no Early Admission or Second Round for the Social Sciences Program and the Japan-in-Asia Cultural Studies Program. (4) Programs offering Rolling Admission will be announced on the website ( (5) If the application fee or necessary documents are not submitted by the respective deadline, the application will be processed under the admission round, which is still available at the time of the fees being paid or documents submitted. (6) In the case of the situation mentioned in (5), an notification will be sent to the applicant. 2. Application fee payment and submission of the documents required Please submit all required documents and pay the application fee according to the respective deadlines and methods prescribed. Please follow the instructions listed in the table below when preparing your documents. 8 iii Academic transcript Academic transcripts must include the school s official seal or signature and should be mailed directly by the school. Please contact us if it will be difficult to have certificates mailed. iv Certified Scores from national or standardized exams Applicants are recommended to submit scores from a standardized examination or a national examination. Official scores should be sent directly from the testing institution by the deadline. (The institutional codes for Nagoya University International Programs are 6535 for the SAT and 5480 for ACT.) * The applicant who falls under category ii of eligibility must submit his/ her result from one of the standardized or national examinations. * Please see Appendix 3 for examples of national examinations. * Please see Appendix 4 to confirm each program s recommended subjects on the various tests. v English Proficiency Test Scores Please submit scores/proof satisfying the English proficiency requirement (see Appendix 2). Official scores should be sent directly from the testing institution by the deadline. (The institutional code for Nagoya University International Programs is 7256 for TOEFL.) *Please note that in all cases, only the results of tests taken after January 2012 will be considered as valid for application. vi Essays Write an essay based on each of the two topics. Be sure that each essay is in MS Word format and in the range of 400 to 600 words in English. Please upload your essays to the Online Admissions System. * The Topics can be found on the final page of the admission requirements under the heading Essay Questions. * If you cannot submit by Word file, please contact the Admissions Office. 8

9 vii 2 Letters of Reference Letters of Reference must be obtained from two persons who meet the requirements stated below. The letter must be submitted online or mailed directly by the Referees themselves. Requirements for Referees One reference must come from a teacher (Referee A) in the field (subject area) the applicant wishes to major in, and the other reference must come from a teacher who is able to evaluate personal and general abilities such as leadership and teamwork skills (Referee B). The referees will be asked to input the required information on the online form and upload a Letter of Reference file to our online system, according to the instructions in the system If you would prefer to have your Referees mail the Letters of Reference instead of uploading them to the online system, please download the Letter of Reference form Confidential Academic Reference for 2014 Admissions from the homepage, complete the applicant section, and give one to each of your Referees. Each Referee must follow the instructions for completing the form, sign and mail it together with the Letter of Reference, preferably on school letterhead, to the Admissions Office. viii Documents showing other strengths If any documents listed in IV. 3 to 6 are applicable to your application, please upload them to the Online Admission System or submit them by mail. ix A document that can be used to verify your nationality and status of residence Please upload this document to the Online Admission System or submit it by mail. This document may be, for example, a copy of your passport, or a certificate issued by your country s embassy in Japan (prepared in English. Please attach a translation if it is issued in another language). If you possess Japanese nationality, you are required to submit a copy of your Japanese passport. 9

10 Notes: (1) Applications will only be accepted if all required documents and the application fee are received by the deadline. It is recommended that you send the documents by registered express mail or an equivalent air courier (e.g. Federal Express, DHL, UPS, etc.). Incomplete applications will not be considered for the selection process. No changes in any of the documents will be allowed after submission. (2) The issuing school or authority should provide English translations of all documents written in other languages and certify that the translations are equivalent to the original. If the school or authority does not provide such a service, the documents must be translated and verified by an outside translation organization and certified to be the same as those issued by the school or authority. Be sure to submit both the original documents and the certified translations. (3) If any abbreviation or code is used in the documents, e.g. Subjects and Grades, an explanation note must be attached. (4) Avoid stapling any application documents if possible. (5) Application documents submitted cannot be returned under any circumstances. (6) If, after admission, it is discovered that any of the documents have been falsified or that necessary details or documents have been omitted, the admission will be cancelled, even in the event that the candidate has already been admitted to the University. 11 VI. Selection Method 1. There will be a primary screening of applicants followed by a secondary screening. In the primary screening, candidates will be shortlisted based on submitted application documents. Only shortlisted applicants will be invited for secondary screening (i.e. an interview in their home country, at Nagoya University or via Skype). Admission offers will subsequently be given to successful candidates. For a holistic evaluation of the applicants, academic questions related to the program applied for may be asked during the interview. 2. The results of the primary screening will be announced on our website (URL: on the dates indicated in the table below. In addition, applicants who pass the primary screening will receive the Primary Screening Results via personal . If you have trouble locating screening results on the website or have not received a personal by the designated date, please contact the Admissions Office, International Programs (see X. Inquiries below). 3. The date, time and location of the secondary screening, as well as the screening method, will be announced by along with the primary screening results. 12 VIII. Admission Procedure Pre-arrival information will be sent to successful applicants together with the announcement of admission results. Please note that a payment must be made as indicated below: 1. Payment of the registration fee To pay the registration fee (JPY 282,000), please refer to the guidelines sent with the admission letter. Note that the payment deadline for applicants who were selected as Nagoya University Global 30 Undergraduate Scholars is set earlier than those shown below. The scholars will be informed of the deadline together with the admission results. For applicants who have not yet completed their high school education at the time of application and fall under application eligibility b, c or d of category i: At the time of application, applicants who have not yet achieved a qualification equivalent to high school graduation must ensure that their certificate of graduation and academic transcripts are sent from their school to the Admissions Office, International Programs of Nagoya University by August 1, Applicants who fall under application eligibility b, c or d of category i must ensure that their International Baccalaureate Diploma, Abitur or Baccalauréat (from the Republic of France), together with their final academic transcripts, are sent from their school to the Admissions Office, International Programs of Nagoya University by August 1, Your admission offer will be revoked if these documents are not received by the Admissions Office, International Programs. All personal information submitted to Nagoya University is managed in compliance with the Act on the Protection of Personal Information Held by Independent Administrative Agencies and the Nagoya University Rules on the Protection of Personal Information. 2. Personal information related to the applicant, such as name, address, date of birth, etc., will be used only for the purposes of admissions, announcement of results, and enrollment procedures. 3. Personal information related to the applicant and admission evaluation results will be used to improve future selection procedures. Furthermore, the personal details of applicants admitted to Nagoya University will be used for i) academic affairs (student registration, academic advising, etc.), ii) student welfare services (health care, career services, tuition exemption, scholarship applications, etc.), and iii) tuition fee payment. 4.
