3 nabse Higher Education Tour Institutional Profile November 14, 2012 Fisk University President: The Honorable Hazel O Leary Barely six months after the end of the Civil War, and just two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, three men John Ogden, the Reverend Erastus Milo Cravath, and the Reverend Edward P. Smith established the Fisk School in Nashville, named in honor of General Clinton B. Fisk of the Tennessee Freedmen s Bureau, who provided the new institution with facilities in former Union Army barracks near the present site of Nashville s Union Station. In these facilities Fisk convened its first classes on January 9, The first students ranged in age from seven to seventy, but shared common experiences of slavery and poverty and an extraordinary thirst for learning. The work of Fisk s founders was sponsored by the American Missionary Association later part of the United Church of Christ, with which Fisk retains an affiliation today. Ogden, Cravath, and Smith, along with others in their movement, shared a dream of an educational institution that would be open to all, regardless of race, and that would measure itself by the highest standards, not of Negro education, but of American education at its best. Their dream was incorporated as Fisk University on August 22, Meharry Medical College President: Dr. Wayne J. Riley Meharry Medical College was founded in 1876 as the Medical Department of Central Tennessee College of Nashville, under the auspices of the Freedman's Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1900, Central Tennessee College became Walden University, and by 1915 the College gained a separate corporate existence from the university. Meharry Medical College exists to improve the health and health care of minority and underserved communities by offering excellent education and training programs in the health sciences; placing special emphasis on providing opportunities to people of color and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, regardless of race or ethnicity; delivering high quality health services; and conducting research that foster the elimination of health disparities.

Doctoral degrees are offered in seven areas: biological sciences, psychology, public administration, curriculum and instruction, administration and supervision, and computer information systems engineering and physical therapy. Founded in 1912, the university has been listed for the past thirteen years in the U.S. News & World Report Guide to America's Best Colleges. Zeppos Originally founded in 1875 as the Peabody Normal School, the Peabody College is today a part of the Vanderbilt University after a series of merging and splitting from other institutions. However, despite the quite unstable management, it still managed to be the top graduate school of education in the US, as according to the US News & World Report Rankings in Also known as the Peabody College of Education and Human Development, the Peabody College is also a historic site. In fact, its 50-acre campus, along with the 22 main buildings, was declared as a National Historic Landmark in Peabody College has produced a considerable amount of notable alumni. It includes former Senator Theodore Bilbo, pop culture icon Bettie Page, authors Christine Sadler and Laura Vernon Hamner, and educators George Doherty and ES Richardson to name a few.
