2 Master of Science in Education Secondary Education (6-12) Graduate Programs Overview The Master of Science in Secondary Education, Traditional and Alternative 5 th Year Programs are offered on the Troy and Dothan Campuses. Traditional 5 th Year Program students must possess a current teaching certificate. Students enrolled in the Alternative program are working toward an initial certification in Secondary Education. The programs included in this area are (including Fall 2007 Headcount): - Biology Troy: 2; Phenix City: 2; Dothan: 1 -History Troy: 5; Dothan: 4 - Social Science Troy: 1; Phenix City: 2; Dothan: 3 - English/Language Arts Troy: 6; Phenix City: 2; Dothan: 13 -Mathematics Troy: 3; Phenix City: 7; Dothan: 12

3 Program Overview, con t The primary purpose of the Master of Science in the Secondary Teacher Program at Troy University is to broaden knowledge in psychological, sociological, and philosophical theory as it relates to classroom instruction and applied research, thereby providing a strong framework for accommodating diversity in both the graduate student and societal need. This knowledge is enhanced through the analysis of research in the various educational disciplines. The program is designed help teachers serve, more effectively, the purposes developed through the knowledge, values, and skills acquired at the Class B level. The focus of the Master of Science Program is to enhance the graduate student s perspective of sound educational judgments, to facilitate critical thinking, and to encourage graduates to become agents of change. The intent of the program is to develop higher levels of competence as a teacher than is possible at the Class B level.

4 Recent Improvements Curriculum groups have worked since the merger to implement critical assignments in every course that meets state standards. The curriculum committee (which consists of faculty members in this area) have identified strengths of the program and feel that Critical Assignments and Field experiences and critical assignments are strongly connected and aligned

5 SLO1: Upon completion of the Master of Science degree program, 80 percent of all candidates will demonstrate their preparation for teaching ( ) as measured by a written and/or oral comprehensive examination administered by the appropriate academic department.

6 Annual Analysis of SLO1 indicated the following results: Dothan candidates took comprehensive exam and 100% successfully passed it Dothan candidates took comprehensive exam and 100% successfully passed it. Therefore, we exceeded our goal of 80 percent.

7 SLO2: Upon completion of the Master of Science degree program, (80) percent of all candidates will demonstrate knowledge of strategies and methods for incorporating technology into curriculum, instruction, assessment, and classroom management (4) (a-d) 1) Successfully completed (made B or better)technology Course EDU 6611 Critical Assignments --WebQuest and Website.

8 Annual Analysis of SLO2 indicated the following results: N=11 100% of the candidates demonstrated knowledge of strategies and methods for incorporating technology into curriculum, instruction, assessment, and classroom management N=5 100% of the candidates demonstrated knowledge of strategies and methods for incorporating technology into curriculum, instruction, assessment, and classroom management. Therefore, our goal was exceeded in the and academic years.

9 SLO3: Upon completion of the Master of Science degree program, (80) percent of all candidates will demonstrate knowledge of all students development and their learning needs and capabilities (4)(e) 1)Successful completion of PSY 6631, SPE 6630 (made B or better).

10 Annual analysis of this student learning outcome indicated the following results: N=6 90% of the candidates demonstrated knowledge of all students development and their learning needs and capabilities. 100% successfully completed PSY 6631 and SPE Therefore, the goal was exceeded.

11 SLO4: Upon completion of the Master of Science degree program, (80) percent of all candidates will demonstrate knowledge of Monitoring Student Learning (4)(e) 1) Successful completion of EDU 6653 (made B and better).

12 Analysis of SLO4 indicated the following results: 100% of the candidates demonstrated knowledge of Monitoring Student Learning. 100% successful completed EDU Therefore, this goal was exceeded.

13 Plans for Further Improvements According to the curriculum committee group, the following areas were identified as areas for further improvements: Regarding Standardized Assessments: 1. Revise AQT grading rubric make available to students beforehand 2. Study guide for AQT Faculty are having to spend time teaching students how to use Livetext.

14 Plans for Further Improvements Regarding Survey Reports: 1. Surveys need to be identified 2. Surveys need to be given (mandatory) at a specific time (i.e., class) 3. Survey information needs to be distributed to all teaching disciplines so each discipline may report on PER Surveys need an area for students to identify their specific discipline

16 Alternative 5 th Year, Secondary Program Overview, con t Two tracks for the master s level are available: a traditional track for students certified in the field at the undergraduate level and a nontraditional track for students who hold a bachelor s degree but are pursuing initial teacher certification at the master s level. For students who hold a bachelor s degree in a discipline other than teacher education, and who do not hold Alabama Class B certification or its equivalent, the nontraditional, Alternative-A track is available. The intent of both tracks is to develop higher levels of competence as a teacher than is possible at the Class B level.

17 Alternative 5 th Year, Secondary Recent Improvements Since the merger of the four Alabama campuses in Fall 2005 the College has implemented the use of LiveText to gather data measuring student success of required state standards as evidenced through critical assignments. As with other programs, a curriculum committee consisting of faculty members meet regularly to review program progress and suggest improvements.

18 Alternative 5 th Year, Secondary SLO1: Upon completion of the Master of Science degree program, at least eighty(80) percent of all candidates will achieve a passing (3 or 4) grade on each competency articulated on the internship evaluation. Assessment: Internship Rating Forms will reflect scores of 3 or 4 on each competency from university supervisors and cooperating teachers.

19 Alternative 5 th Year, Secondary Results of Analysis indicated that this goal was exceeded in both the and academic years N=17 90% of the candidates achieved a passing grade (3 or 4) on each of the competency areas on the final internship evaluations N=12 90% of the candidates achieved a passing grade (3 or 4) on each of the competency areas on the final internship evaluations.

N=4 took EDU 6611 and successfully completed the critical assignments.
