4 About Grace Bible College Grace is located on a beautiful campus in Wyoming, a suburb of Grand Rapids, MI. The attractive facilities, academic buildings, athletic center, offices, library, and dorms are surrounded by well-groomed lawns and manicured landscaping. The conveniences surrounding a large city are available but the peaceful surroundings of the campus give a relaxed atmosphere to the students and staff. Grace Bible College (GBC) began in It was founded as Milwaukee Bible Institute, a training center for laymen and Sunday school teachers of Milwaukee. The Institute was organized by Rev. Charles F. Baker, then pastor of the Fundamental Bible Church. The regular day school program began in In 1953, the curriculum was broadened: Milwaukee Bible Institute became Milwaukee Bible College. In 1961, the college was moved to suburban Grand Rapids, MI and renamed Grace Bible College. The school has grown from a three-year Bible Institute to a college that includes two year, four year, and five year programs. Alumni from the college are active in service and ministry around the world. Grace Bible College is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Universities. From The President, Ken Kemper I believe athletics have incredible parallels to life. While our society has made competitions and games into bigger issues than they ought to be, they are of great value. In athletics we can train and push ourselves, while at the same time learn to work as a team and excel. Participating in athletics also makes a player submit to coaching and public scrutiny. I play and have played all types of athletics and believe the dedication and discipline learned can and should be applied to all of life. I have hit the winning shot at the buzzer and struck out with the bases loaded in the last inning. Reflecting back upon these experiences, I continually see the parallels between athletics in life. 6 The NCCAA History & Philosophy The National Christian College Athletic Association was incorporated to provide a Christian-based organization that functions uniquely as a national and international agency for the promotion of outreach and ministry, and for the maintenance, enhancement, and promotion of intercollegiate athletic competition with a Christian perspective. The very existence of the NCCAA speaks to the need of a different game plan for college athletics in the midst of an era when the very foundations of our society are being eroded morally. The NCCAA wants to step into the gap and become a vehicle for implementing a positive and purposeful athletic experience in cooperation with member institutions and their student-athletes. The NCCAA game plan is to assist colleges in producing winners in the game of life. Its intent is to assist the colleges and coaches in producing a game plan that will influence the student-athlete immediately as well as for his/her entire life; a plan that will challenge the student-athlete through regional and national competition; a plan that expects academic credibility; a plan of maximum development through assisting college coaches with leadership, programs, and materials; a plan that encourages a mature functioning body of Christians able to serve family, school, church and society. The NCCAA is unique in its purpose, its constituency, and hopefully its outcome. It is not who wins the game on the athletic field that really counts, but rather who wins that all-important game being fought in the lives of our nation s young people. The NCCAA makes a difference in developing well balanced, visionary leaders of tomorrow. The ACCA History & Philosophy The ACCA was incorporated to provide an opportunity for smaller Christian college members to compete on an equal level of competition with schools of like size and athletic programs. The ACCA was established in 1983 as the National Bible College Athletic Association (NBCAA) to provide a national organization to hold championships, name All-Americans, scholar athletes and promote member colleges. The name was changed to the Association of Christian College Athletics (ACCA) in June A commissioner was hired and a plan for membership growth was established. The aim of the ACCA is to promote the education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member colleges, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to Jesus Christ and the principle that athletics serve as an opportunity to share one s faith. Athletics in a Christian college are unique experiences which prepare men and women for a life of meaningful work and service. The athletic experience provides a dynamic growth process for learning discipline, teamwork, leadership, and mutual respect where the student-athlete and his/her preparation for life is more important to the coaches and the athletic administration than win-loss records and championships. For the student-athlete who wants to be a part of a team that competes on a regional and national level but realizes the importance of his/her education, the ACCA is the right game plan. The ACCA is an organization bringing Christian colleges together not just for athletic competition; more importantly, it is an organization bringing colleges together who have a common goal and perspective as they serve Christ in higher education. 10 Coaching Staff John Bailey, Assistant Coach John Bailey, father of Head Coach Gary Bailey, brings years of coaching experience to the Tigers. Coach Bailey, Sr. has coached many young athletes in the last 50 years. From coaching pee-wee and rocket basketball to the 2006 & 2009 NCCAA national championship, John has contributed to the lives of many young basketball players. Coach Bailey Sr. stays in Michigan a large portion of the summer and helps in the development of each player. He attends the summer camps and open gyms and watches player development. "My father was the one who introduced me to basketball and coached me all the way to college. He wasn't always the one calling the shots from the sidelines but helped me with the other parts of the game at home and in the driveway. Even though he lives in Florida, it is great when he makes the games and can be a part of the team. The guys enjoy having him in the gym and he loves spending time with the team. He was an important part of the 2006 national championship. "It's fun to have Dad around helping out," said Coach Bailey. 11 Season Outlook The Tigers go into the season humbled by the success of last season but with a great deal of excitement about this season. With the Tigers returning almost all of their team from last year and four new, exciting, young players to the squad, it could prove to be another season to remember. Head Coach Gary Bailey has made sure this experienced group will be challenged early and often by putting together what many consider the most difficult schedule in school history. The schedule consists of five teams from the NCAA II, two teams from the NCAA III, ten NAIA squads, and two teams from the USCAA. Thirteen games will be played in the NCCAA II. New to the schedule will be two games in Hawaii against Pacific West Conference teams Hilo University and Hawaii Pacific University both in the NCAA II. GBC will also travel to Alaska to face the University of Alaska Fairbanks and University of Alaska Anchorage. GBC will also play St. Francis University and Indiana University-Northwest for the first time this year. Returning to the schedule this year is NCAA II, University of Wisconsin-Parkside, which will host the Tigers in their Thanksgiving Tournament. Hope College and Calvin College both from the NCAA III will host the Tigers in their respective tournaments again this year along with Davenport University in their first tournament in their new facility. The Tigers will play only nine home games this year. Great Lakes Christian College, Moody Bible Institute, Kuyper College, and Northland International University from the NCCAA II, Aquinas College and Cornerstone University from the NAIA II, and Andrews University and Indiana University Northwest from the USCAA will visit the Tigers in the Aldrich Center. The Tigers will travel to Kentucky to face three NCCAA II powers Wesley College, Kentucky Christian University and Valley Forge Christian College in a match-up of last year s national finals game. The Tigers will return four starters from last year s national championship team. All sixteen players on last year s squad are still attending Grace with three players not returning due to injury or early graduation. NCCAA II All American, junior Allen Durham returns with sophomore Ryan Krombeen on the inside. Senior Kyle Rothley will give the Tigers additional strength on the boards and on the defensive end. Junior Dan Dame has worked hard in the off-season and will help on the inside and at the small forward spot. Sophomore Carl Getty continues to show improvement and should push the post players for added minutes this season. Sophomore David Steenstra has shown much improvement over the summer and continues to add depth to the inside. The Tigers are experienced and deep at the guard spot with senior Brandon Herlein improving his offensive presence over the summer to go along with his strong defensive play. Senior Paul Nelson was second on the team in points and scoring average last year and has been working hard on the defensive end over the summer. Sophomore Cory Jamieson moved into the starting line-up at the point last year and the Tigers won 18 games in row. At 6 3, his added strength and offensive scoring should give other teams match-up problems. The coaches have watched sophomores Matt Kurtz, Bryce Stanhope, and Cameron Myers all make improvements in their games. All three players are playing with more confidence after getting good minutes during their freshman year. Senior Jerry McClearen will give more depth at the guard spot after joining the team after spending three years as the student assistant. The addition of four incoming freshman should keep the Tigers in the chase for another Midwest Region championship. At 6 4, Zachary Schutte and Justin Govan bring size and athleticism to the forward spots and Greg Salmon has a very nice shot and is a great rebounder at 6 2. At 6 7, Ryan Dame brings an inside/outside combination that will cause match-up problems for some teams. The Coaching staff has worked hard to put together a squad that understands the balance of academics and the game of basketball and the responsibilities that come with being on a Grace athletic team. This group seems to have already developed the chemistry that we look for at Grace each year. Our veteran players understand that the development of the younger player s is vital to the success of the team Team and the GBC Roster teams in the future. 12 A Season in review The season will be remembered as one of the greatest seasons in GBC basketball history. While shattering the old win record of 21 wins by winning 30 games, the Tigers won their second national championship in four years. The Tigers finished the season riding a nineteen game winning streak. The streak started on January 3 rd against NCAA II Ferris State University. It was Grace s first win over a D-II school. The team will try to extend the streak this season. On November 14 th, GBC took on The Citadel in Charleston, SC for their first taste of NCAA I action. The Tigers led late into the game before falling behind by three with two minutes to go. Two late threes by the Bulldogs put the game out of reach and the Tigers lost by nine. The Citadel turned in their finest season in school history going After the game, many of The Citadel s fans came to greet the team and express their appreciation for the sportsmanship of the Tigers. One fan expressed to Coach Gary Bailey that he felt that there were two teams in the United States that showed true character and sportsmanship while playing the game of basketball, The Citadel, and Grace Bible College. The gentleman was a 1965 graduate of The Citadel. One month later, the Tigers traveled to Michigan State to watch the Spartans play the Citadel. The Spartans won that game by fourteen. Grace lost only eight games during the season. None of those losses came after the new year as the Tigers went 19-0 in The losses came to Calvin College NCAA III (19-8), The Citadel NCAA I (21-13), two to Cornerstone NAIA II (21-12), Davenport University NAIA II (20-11), Hope College NCAA III (21-8), Spring Arbor University NAIA II (21-10), and William Penn University NAIA II (22-10). Every team was ranked in the top 25 of their respective polls at some point during the season except for The Citadel. The combined record of the teams that defeated the Tigers was Including the Midwest Regional and the National Tournament, the Tigers finished the season 19-0 against NCCAA II teams. During the course of the year there were many honors bestowed upon the Tigers players and coaches. Paul Nelson was named to the Hope College Holland Sentinel All Tournament Team. Allen Durham was named to the Calvin College All Tournament Team. Allen was also named to the NCCAA II All Tournament Team and was named tournament MVP. He also picked up ACCA All American honors. Brandon Herlein was named NCCAA II Midwest All Region. Brandon Clahassey was also named All Region and was also named Honorable Mention All American. Head Coach Gary Bailey was selected as the NCCAA II Midwest Region Coach of the Year. Later, he was selected as the NCCAA II National Coach of the Year. With the win in the NCAA II finals, Coach Bailey became the all time win leader at Grace in just his fourth season with 89 wins. The season also saw a few individual records fall. Paul Nelson hit seven threes against The University of Purdue-North Central (NAIA II) to break the existing record of six held by a number of Tigers. Allen Durham broke the season rebound record by hauling in 419 boards. Durham was also named the NCCAA II Student Athlete of the Week in January. At the Tiger Banquet in April, Allen Durham was named team MVP. Paul Nelson received the Most Improved Player Award and Brandon Clahassey took home the prestigious Tiger Award. The outpouring of support from the community and the school made the season complete. A parade was held in Wyoming, MI for the Tigers and a celebration in the Aldrich Center gymnasium. A championship banner was raised to the rafters and a new championship picture of the Tigers hangs beside the 2006 champions picture. The team worked extremely hard for everything they achieved this year. They are a special group. We forged a great bond this year through our sweat and time together. They understood that it took teamwork, chemistry and character to achieve all of this. My hope is that they take those lessons with them when they are finished at Grace. 15 Player Profiles #1 Dan Dame 6 4 Junior Wayland HS / Wayland, MI Dan returns to Grace after playing all last season with a nagging knee injury. Dan has worked hard in the off season taking off thirty pounds with extensive weight training. After a successful knee surgery he should be back to full potential. Dan recorded a high game of 17 points against Great Lakes Christian College and a high of 16 rebounds at Florida Christian in Dan is a heady player that the coaches like to have on the floor especially at the end of a game. He handles the ball and pressure well. Dan has been one of the best players on the floor all summer in open gyms. Dan has a great touch all the way out including the three and is an outstanding rebounder at both ends of the floor. We are excited to see Dan play this year. He is finally healthy and the turnaround in his play has been amazing. He could certainly be one of the top players in the region this year. Cory is probably the only natural point guard on the team and his 6 3 frame creates some match-up problems for opposing teams. His summer work is evident as he is getting to the basket often and has developed a nice three point shot if the defense plays off. Cory led the team in assists in Cory scored a career high of 22 points in a GBC win over NCAA II Ferris State University. Cory had numerous games of 5-8 assists, most notably a 7 assist performance in a narrow loss to NCAA I The Citadel. Cory has developed into one of the best point guards in the country in the NCCAA and he is just starting his 2 nd season. His court awareness and ball handling improve with every game and he has found a nice balance between scoring and distributing. 16 Player Profiles #3 Bryce Stanhope 6 1 Sophomore Hastings HS / Hastings, MI Bryce enters his sophomore year with a lot more confidence and in much better basketball form than his freshman year. He hopes to be a basketball personal trainer after graduation and has worked hard to learn new techniques for ball handling and basketball drills. Bryce had a high game of 10 points and 3 assists against Great Lakes Christian College and scored 8 points in numerous games. He had a high rebounding game of 4 against Nebraska Christian College. With a great shot from anywhere on the floor and an aggressive defensive style, Bryce should see extended minutes this season. Bryce has worked hard this summer and it shows. I think he will push all of our guards for playing time. It will be very important for Bryce to continue his development this year because we lose two outstanding guards next year and he will have to be ready to carry more of a load. Ryan sees the floor very well. He has developed a very nice mid-range jumper and can hit the three. Ryan has also worked on getting stronger this summer. Ryan scored 19 points and had 6 assists against D-III Baldwin Wallace and had a career high rebounding game against Silver Lake College and Maranatha College with 10 boards. He also pulled down 9 rebounds on a few occasions most notably in GBC s upset of NCAA II Ferris State University. Being left handed with excellent post and passing skills, Ryan can be a very dangerous post presence. Ryan was voted to serve as a captain this year by his teammates and it is a really good choice. He has been a leader for us from his very first day at school. 17 Player Profiles #10 Cameron Myers 5 10 Sophomore Enumclaw HS / Enumclaw, WA Cameron worked hard in the weight room during the off season. He comes back this season with more confidence and a year s experience under his belt. One of only two point guards on the team, Cameron saw action in 21 games as a freshman and averaged 7.5 minutes per game. His high game of six points came against Great Lakes Christian College. He played a season high 16 minutes against Clearwater Christian College in Florida. Cameron is just a little experience away from being a really good point guard. He plays very hard and is not afraid to go inside. I think we will see him really develop now that he has his freshman year out of the way. He received the Most Improved Player award last year from the coaching staff. During the regional semi-finals in Lincoln, IL last year, Paul hit seven three s to break the school record for three s made in a single game. Paul was selected as an All Tournament player in the Holland Sentinel Community Tournament after scoring 10 points against Hope College and 23 against Purdue University North Central. Paul started the first eighteen games of the season for us but we moved him to the first guard off the bench to improve our bench scoring. He handled this situation with dignity and class and was one of the biggest reasons we had such a successful season. My hope is that all of our players will follow his lead and put team needs first. 18 Player Profiles #13 Brandon Herlein 6 1 Senior Cadillac Heritage HS / Cadillac, MI Entering his senior season, the coaching staff is expecting big things from Brandon. Brandon is also expecting big things from himself. This season he did not play soccer to concentrate on pre-season basketball and it shows. Already one of the better defensive players on the Tiger squad, Brandon has worked hard on the offensive end to contribute more from the two guard. With a high game of 18 last season, Brandon sits at the 36 th position on the all time scoring list with 687 points. His 101 steals puts him at 8 th all time and his 40 charges drawn ranks him second. Brandon is looking to help us more on the offensive end with his scoring. He has a beautiful three point shot and he can penetrate and hit the jumper. He hasn t looked for his shot as well as we would have liked in the past but he has made huge strides over the summer. Carl is continually striving to get better and it is showing. With a high game of 8 points and 7 rebounds last year against Great Lakes Christian College in the Midwest Regionals, he showed just how much progress he made in his first season. He also had five rebounds in three other games in limited minutes. I don t think anyone on this team works harder than Carl. He is constantly striving to get better. He has a great basketball frame and jumps well. He plays hard every second in games and practice. He is an excellent rebounder and should give us more minutes this season. 19 Player Profiles #22 Matt Kurtz 6 1 Sophomore Lowell HS / Lowell, MI Matt has worked hard on his game and it shows. He is a great on ball defender and the fastest player on the team which translates into a lot of steals and fast break baskets. Matt is looking to score more now and the coaches have been impressed with his play over the summer. With high scoring games of 16 on two occasions against Silver Lake College and University of Michigan Dearborn he has shown that he can be a scorer. A 6 assist game against Great Lakes Christian College and a 4 assist game in a win over NCAA II Ferris State has the coaching staff excited about Matt s future at the guard spot. His excellent leaping ability helped Matt to a 6 rebound performance against Calvin College. Matt turned in an unbelievable freshman year with some really big statistical games in only 14 minutes a game. He plays really hardnosed defense along with his encouraging offensive output. We will need Matt to pick up more minutes this year. Averaging18 points per game at over 60% shooting and over 10 rebounds per game, he deserved the recognition he received last year. He was selected as 1 st team All Region, an ACCA All American selection, and was placed on the NCCAA National Tournament team and named tournament MVP. Allen had high games of 26 points against NCAA I The Citadel and 25 points and 18 rebounds in a win over NCAA II Ferris State University. His high game of 28 came in the National semi-final game against Southeastern University and his high rebound game of 22 against Cornerstone University. Allen understands the team concept as well as anyone I have coached. He has a tremendous work ethic and leads by example. Allen will serve his teammates as a captain this year. 20 Player Profiles #34 David Steenstra 6 4 Sophomore Fremont Home School / Fremont, MI David showed a great deal of improvement from the beginning of the season to the end and has stepped it up even more over the summer. He is playing with much more confidence. David s high game of 6 points came against Great Lakes Christian College and he had a high rebound game of 5 against Great Lakes and again at Nebraska Christian College. David s three point shot has improved along with his confidence on defense and with the ball. David is the type of player that every coach loves to have on his team. He is hungry for basketball knowledge and works hard. He is never in a bad mood and always has a smile on his face. It will be fun watching David continue to improve over this season. Kyle is an especially good defender on players much taller than he. Always willing to take a charge or give up an open shot to kick it to a teammate, he has endeared himself to the coaching staff for his team mentality. Kyle scored a season high 11 points against the University of Michigan Dearborn and a 10 point 7 rebound game against Great Lakes Christian College. Kyle has been a joy to have on the team these last three years. He works hard every second that he is on the floor and he gives us a good, tough defender in the post and always some hard fought rebounds. He is always willing to take a charge or dive on the floor. 21 New Player Profiles #42 Zach Schutte 6 4 Freshman Calvin Christian HS / Grandville, MI Zach is one of the players that the coaching staff went after very hard this year. He has good size, is very athletic, and has a great shot from anywhere. More than these things, he is a fine young man with a great attitude about life and athletics. In his senior season at Calvin Christian High School, Zach averaged 15 points per game to go along with 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 blocks per game. He was an All Conference, All Area and All State selection. He was also selected as a Burger King Athlete of the Week in the Grand Rapids area. If Zach plays four years for Grace, I predict that he will be one of those players that is among the leaders in every career statistical category. He has all the tools and the knowledge to be one of the all-time greats at GBC. Head Coach Gary Bailey #5 Jerry McClearen 5 11 Senior Cross Lex HS / Jeddo, MI Jerry joins the team after serving it for the last three years as a Student Assistant. He has been a loyal part of this team for the last three years and has helped with nearly every aspect, stepping in many times during practice to help with drills or in scrimmages. Jerry has developed a very nice three point shot and has improved his game a great deal. Jerry deserves this opportunity for all of the work he has done over the past three years. I am really happy to have him wearing number five this season. Head Coach - Gary Bailey #12 Greg Salmon 6 2 Freshman Wayland HS / Wayland, MI Greg continues the great group of players to come out of Wayland High School. He is a very hard worker on the boards and has a good nose for the ball. He has one of the better three point shots on this year s team. Averaging just over 10 points and 7 rebounds a game as a senior, Greg showed that he could contribute on a very talented high school team. He was selected as the Wayland Athlete of the Month in March and was selected to the All Conference and All County Teams. He is a member of The Fellowship of Christian Athletes. A 4.0 student in high school, Greg hopes to continue his academic goals at Grace. Greg is somewhat of an in-between player at 6 2. He likes to be around the basket and is a really nice rebounder. 22 New Player Profiles #21 Justin Govan 6 4 Freshman Plymouth Christian Academy / Detroit, MI At 6 4 and with a college-ready frame, the staff believes that Justin will be a very good college athlete. As he continues to adjust to the speed of the college game the staff has already seen much improvement in his confidence and aggressiveness. During his senior campaign at Plymouth Christian Academy, Justin averaged 18 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 assists while garnering All Conference, All Area, and All State honors. Justin has come in to Grace and fit in to the student body very well. Those adjustments will translate well onto the court. Justin will have the opportunity to go against Allen Durham in practice every day which will put him on the fast track to adjusting to college level play. Justin is going to be a good one! Head Coach Gary Bailey #23 Ryan Dame 6 7 Freshman Wayland HS / Wayland, MI Ryan Dame comes to us by way of Davenport University. Ryan was a red shirt freshman after injuring his knee. This year, Ryan decided to attend Grace and play with his brother, Dan, and high school teammate, Cory Jamieson. A forward at 6 7, Ryan will help us inside and create matchup problems for some teams because he can step out and play the perimeter. A two year All Conference, All Area, and All County player, he averaged 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 blocks per game his senior year. We were quite surprised and happy that Ryan made the decision to attend Grace this year. He is an unselfish player that finishes strong around the basket and has a very nice jumper. Coach VanderLaan was also a noted sports official in the Grand Rapids area for over 20 years. The Frank VanderLaan Award honors the junior or senior athlete who has exhibited excellence in athletics as well as academics and who displayed a Christian character within the College community during the academic year.
