3 The MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics the center Supply chain professionals look to the MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics as a vital resource that helps their companies to excel in more challenging markets and develop new strategies for growth. For more than two decades the MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics has been a world leader in supply chain management education and research. CTL has made major knowledge contributions to the supply chain field and helped numerous companies to gain competitive advantage from its cutting edge research. Graduates of CTL s programs occupy senior management positions in virtually every industry, and continue to use its resources to update their knowledge and skills. Today, the Center s mission is more important than ever. The rapidly evolving field of supply chain management has become more strategically important to companies, and CTL is expanding its portfolio of services to meet these new demands. Three Components CTL consists of three main components: Research, Outreach and Education. The Center s world-renowned research programs directly involve over 75 faculty and research staff from a wide range of academic disciplines, as well as researchers in various affiliate organizations around the world. The gateway to this work is the Center s Corporate Outreach Program. Through this multi-faceted program, industry and CTL collaborate to turn innovative research into market-winning commercial applications. In education MIT is consistently ranked first among business programs in logistics and supply chain management. 4 CTL Research The MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics is the world s leading center for research in supply chain management and logistics. The Center coordinates multiple research programs across MIT, ranging from projects led by a single faculty member to large-scale, multi-year initiatives involving affiliated facilities across the globe and a dedicated research staff. The work carried out by CTL spans every aspect of supply chain management. The following are some examples of this pioneering work. Supply Chain 2020 A multiyear research project to identify and analyze the factors that are critical to the success of future supply chains as far into the future as the year The Supply Chain Response to Disruption A study that looks at the resilience of supply chains when subject to major disruptions such as the impact of a terrorist attack. Outsourcing and Postponement Delaying the final configuration of a product as late as possible in the supply chain can cut inventory costs and improve customer service. CTL is studying the technique and the implications for employment patterns in manufacturing. Innovations in Transportation Procurement New methods such as combinatorial auctions are revolutionizing the procurement of transportation services. A CTL research program explores how these methods are being applied and what they achieve. We are working with MIT on supply chain flexibility and agility issues. 5 outreach Corporate Outreach The gateway for companies to work with CTL is the Corporate Outreach Program. The Center is unique in the way it fosters a collaborative community of corporate sponsors, where the exchange of knowledge, experience, and expertise accelerates the adoption of supply chain innovation into practice. Outreach builds and sustains relationships that drive leading edge ideas and competitiveness. In 2004, CTL redesigned and expanded its Corporate Outreach Program. The program offers three forms of engagement. I. Exchange Partner The Supply Chain Exchange is the platform for ongoing corporate engagement with the Center and MIT. The program serves as a common meeting ground where information, experiences, perspectives, and opinions are openly shared in a collaborative and collegial setting. Benefits of Exchange membership include placements at CTL s acclaimed symposia and executive courses, research briefings, and connections to graduate students for research and recruiting purposes. II. Research Partner Exchange sponsor organizations that want to engage in specific areas of research may elect to join one or more Research Groups. The groups bring together researchers and sponsors to probe deeply into specific supply chain issues and problems, giving members early access to groundbreaking research. Example areas being investigated include transportation procurement and the application of smart object technology. In many cases Research Groups grew out of the research work carried out in collaboration with a single sponsor company. III. Strategic Partner Strategic Partners enjoy the highest level of interaction and collaboration with CTL faculty, researchers and students as well as with other industry leading companies. Strategic Partners are part of the Center s Executive Board, helping to guide the Center and influence its future direction. They have complimentary participation in all Center events and Research Groups, and enjoy other benefits designed to promote a close and continuous relationship with CTL. 6 Education The MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics is the pre-eminent source of education programs for supply chain and logistics professionals. MIT is consistently ranked first among graduate programs in logistics and supply chain management. MLOG Leaders education CTL s flagship offering is the Master of Engineering in Logistics (MLOG) program, an intense, nine-month professional Masters degree program that teaches a unique mix of analytical and leadership skills. The program prepares students to become problem solvers capable of designing and operating complex systems. Students also develop the selling and negotiating competencies they will need to implement their ideas. Moreover, the MLOG program exposes students to MIT s influential alumni and industry network. Since its inception in 1999 the number of MLOG applicants has grown by over 35% annually, and its graduates have become leaders in major retailing, manufacturing, transportation, software and consulting firms. More Options In addition to the MLOG program, the Center runs a two-year research-oriented logistics and supply chain management Master of Science Program as well as a Ph.D. program in the MIT Engineering Systems Division. These programs benefit from MIT s world-renowned faculty, research resources and extensive industry contacts. Executive Excellence CTL maintains its reputation for excellence in education at the executive level. Companies can choose from a range of options including customized courses for single enterprises and consortia. Each summer CTL offers its five-day Supply Chain Thought Leadership course that features a fast-paced mix of management exercises, thought-provoking lecture/discussion sessions and distinguished speakers. A shorter annual executive course is held in January. I thoroughly enjoyed the MLOG program and having the chance to study Logistics Operations, and Supply Chain with some of the top minds in the field. 7 international International The 2003 launch of the MIT-Zaragoza International Logistics program expanded CTL s international portfolio in each of its three component areas, and added a new dimension to education and research in the supply chain field. The program, a partnership between CTL and the Government of Aragón in Spain, offers graduate and executive education in logistics, taught in English, to students from around the world. The options include a Masters in Logistics & Supply Chain Management degree (ZLOG), a doctorate degree, and education courses leading to certificates in various logistics-related disciplines. Researchers and faculty interact with academic, industry and government communities through conferences, lecture series, seminars, and a corporate sponsorship program. Also part of this effort is the annual Zaragoza Summit. Unique Setting A truly innovative feature of the program is that it embeds an advanced education and research center in a state-of-the-art logistics park in Zaragoza, Spain. Instead of putting a laboratory in a university the program puts the university within a largescale laboratory. This unique industrial setting enables researchers to experiment with new logistics processes, concepts and technologies, and to rapidly move academic research into the commercial world.
