1 A fun and educational way to create communication between two worlds. Morven Muilwijk Jan This project connects pupils in the Northern-Uganda and Norway. Through the writing of letters pupils get a greater global understanding and at the same time the possibility to practice their English. This document contains goals, practical procedures, challenges, guidelines, ideas and contact information. Få unge inspirert til å ta del i, og engasjera seg i samfunnet og menneske på eit globalt nivå
2 Background Autumn 2010 I, Morven Muilwijk, traveled to Uganda to work as a volunteer. I taught mathematics and English for three months at a school in Gulu, the Northern-Uganda. I also visited and taught at several other schools in the area. The Northern-Uganda is an area that has been ravaged by a horrible insurgency war for over 20 years and has just recently, in 2005, become stabile. I had a fantastic trip; Uganda is a beautiful country, the people are extremely friendly and life was full of joy. You can read more about my travel and see pictures on my blog; (In Norwegian) There are major differences between Norway and Uganda, in the way of life, living conditions, wealth, educational system, etc. But there are also many similarities between these countries, and the fact that children are alike everywhere is one. The children s behavior and dreams are very much alike. For children it is very difficult to imagine a world or way living, completely different from their own. I launched the idea for a communication project when I was in Uganda, and the enthusiasm and interest among the children was so great that I expanded the number of classes participating. In the first classes the project was tried in, it was a great success, and the pupils were very happy, both in Norway and Uganda. Project description The project involves that each pupil gets a penpal in the other country. Through writing letters the pupils get to train their English and get a better global understanding. Classes in Gulu are linked to one or several classes in Norway, the reason for this is the difference in number of pupils in class. Teachers can if they want add up to several educational programs around the project. (movies, etc.) The letters are written in English, since this also is an official language in Uganda. Classes are linked together so that they are roughly on the same level, but there will be some age differences due to the differences in the school system, and the fact that some pupils in Uganda start late or must go over. The classes in Uganda range from primary 5 to 7, and the age of the pupils range between 10 and 16. The target group in Norway is from class 6 to 8. The English level of the pupils in Uganda is slightly higher than from those in Norway, because all teaching in Uganda is in English. Goals and success criteria - Over time, break prejudices and barriers - To create a mutual understanding and firsthand schooling about how things are other places in the world. - Show Africa s and the Western World s diversity by changing attitudes and xenophobia (fear for the strange) - Training English writing and reading skills.
3 The project s continuity and friendship schools My aim is that the project is sustainable and that it is maintained over time. It is easy that communication like this dies out after several months. My wish is that the schools become friendship schools and sustain contact. When the pupils leave school, the teacher can introduce the project to new pupils and continue the writing. The reason why I write this document is that the project easily can be passed on to other teachers and classes. Hopefully will the letter writing continue for many years and open a sea of possibilities for the schools. It is also fully possible that the project can expand gradually if there is interest among other teachers/schools. The teachers can communicate about this. Practical procedures The project will take place in the school s auspices and must not be taken home. A class receives letters from another class, and the pupils write their responses. Creativity has no boundaries, they can make drawings, etc. The teachers can help the pupils with language and interpretation. It is recommended that the teacher looks through the letters to check that they don t contain anything that may be offensive, provocative or any other negative attitude. It is important to remember that there are major developmental and economical differences between Norway and Uganda. It is therefore a part of the teacher s responsibility to ensure that the pupils don t begin to ask for any material goods or other services, because this is not the purpose of the project. Letters are then collected by the teacher and he or she sends them gathered in one envelope with the post. It may take long time for mail between Norway and Uganda. Some teachers in Uganda also use , so sometimes it can be possible for teachers to correspond online. Responsibility The project is entirely voluntary. I, Morven Muilwijk, who started the project, but I do not have the capacity to control it. Each school has a contact person who does the organization and keeps contact with other schools. Of course it is entirely voluntary, but I hope you are dedicated and do your best to ensure that the contact is maintained and the project will be great fun for the pupils. Finances/ budget The project is very cheap but there will be some small expenses associated with letter postage. It is my desire that Schools in Norway can take this, and also contribute slightly to the schools in Gulu who can not afford the postage. I ve thought of several ways of transferring money, but since the amounts are so small, I think it is best to send some US dollars in a small envelope among with the letters to pay for the return. We are talking about small amounts, but I hope we can find a solution. Guidelines - The project will take place in the school s auspices and must not be taken home, in order to avoid requests for material support and other services.
4 - Avoid personal information in the letters, such as phone numbers etc. - Avoid sending money to individuals. - Remember what can provoke jealousy - Avoid content that may be offensive, negative or scornfully Ideas for things to write about: -Person; name, age, family, home place, parents, jobs, the house (describe how things look like) - Country; nature, language, activities, solemn, facts, animals, weather, culture, geography - Leisure; hobbies, what you like, music, movies - Food - School; nr pupils, facts, subjects, favourites, games, sports, rules, everyday - Future and dreams - Experiences, trips, stories - Learn some of the local language - What you are going to do today - National history, differences and similarities between the countries - Pictures Contact information In Gulu, David Komakech can also be contacted for inquiries other than St. Jude.
