2 Objectives Development of common terminology and definition of Energy Flexibility in buildings and energy grid interaction (STA) Investigation of the social and indoor environmental implication/constraints associated with the introduction of Energy Flexibility in buildings (STA) Development of ideas for labelling of buildings Energy Flexibility (STA) Analysis of load management, energy storage and generation possibilities in buildings including cost/benefit analysis (STB) Determination of the flexibility potential both at building and at aggregated level with respect to building type, location (urban/rural) and climate. Analysis of the impact of energy flexible buildings on the low voltage grid incl. integrations of renewable energies and change in electricity generation patterns (STB) Investigation and development of control strategies and algorithms, which can facilitate smart usage of the flexibility potential in different buildings (STB) Demonstration of Energy Flexibility through experimental studies (STC) Investigation of user motivation and acceptance associated with the introduction of Energy Flexibility in buildings (STC) IEA DSM Event 10/6/ Pagina 3 Scope Increasing knowledge on building Energy Flexibility and the services buildings can provide to energy grids Identification of critical aspects and possible solutions to manage the Energy Flexibility that buildings can provide IEA DSM Event 10/6/ Pagina 4 2

Activity A.2: Development of a methodology for characterization of Energy Flexibility in buildings. Development of ideas and recommendations concerning future work on Energy Flexibility labelling of buildings and components. Identification of opportunities and constraints of aggregation. Activity A.3: Literature review on user needs (thermal comfort, IAQ, ), motivation (save money, save energy, ) and barriers for application of Energy Flexibility. Investigation of the social and indoor environmental implication/constraints associated with the introduction of Energy Flexibility in different building types. IEA DSM Event 10/6/ Pagina 6 3

4 Subtask B Activity B.1: Investigation of load management, energy storage and generation possibilities in buildings, including quantification of the practical potential of different energy storage solutions in new and existing buildings. Investigation of the impact of different load profiles and user behaviour as well as cost benefit analysis. Activity B.2: Investigation and development of control strategies and algorithms for Energy Flexibility in buildings. Implementation in selected components/systems: home automation, Building Energy Management systems, low level controllers on the different devices, thermostats, etc. Both control capability and prices will be investigated. Activity B.3: Laboratory (including full scale) tests of components, systems and control strategies. Activity B.4: Simulation and documentation of example cases under different scenarios including varying energy prices, weather conditions, user behaviour, etc. and based on verified performance (from Subtask C). Determination of the Energy Flexibility potential both at building and at aggregated level the latter e.g. through simulations of an assumed number of energy flexible buildings using energy system models to determine their impact on the electricity grid.
