1 Who He Is and What He Did: What Jesus Person Says about His Mission (a sermon series on the letter to the Hebrews) The Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost Sunday, October 4, 2015 Announcements WORSHIP INSERTS - The green folder in today s bulletin contains everything you need in order to participate in today s worship service. LARGE PRINT - Two large print hymnals are available in the entrance. Large print copies of the bulletin and worship folders are also available there. 1
2 HOLY COMMUNION - will be served in this week s service. Please note your intention to receive communion by checking the Communed box on the friendship register. Because the Bible has convinced us that receiving the sacrament together is a public statement of oneness in beliefs and commitments, guests who are not members of St. Paul s should speak with the pastor before communing. We don t want to put you in a position of stating your agreement with our beliefs without having the opportunity to explain them to you. SUNDAY SCHOOL will meet today. These classes provide a good introduction to Bible History for students from age three through grade six and will meet in the church basement after the worship service. Please contact Pastor Carter or Kim Wiepking if you have any questions about Sunday School. BIBLE STUDY - Our Sunday morning Bible Study has begun a study entitled, Living Like the Church in Challenging Times. This course is based on the Apostle Paul s letters to the Christians in Galatia and Ephesus. Each of these congregations faced incredible challenges from the religious and secular movements and trends of their day. We ll learn much from what Paul taught them for our lives in similarly challenging times. Bible Study meets in Room 3 after the worship services. Today: Living like the Church: When a Friend Is Slipping Away from the Truth. Next Sunday: Living Like the Church: Recognizing the Difference Between True Doctrine and False Doctrine. FAMILY OF THE WEEK - Each week, we highlight a family in our bulletin as our Family of the Week. That family also serves as greeters that week. While most of the folks we re asking to serve are on the second time around, we re still working to catch a few folks who haven t served yet. If you haven t been able to serve yet, please contact Jane Bergman to schedule a time when you can. We re really hoping that everyone will be able to participate. This week: Pastor and Claudine Carter have been members of St. Paul s since he became our pastor in They came here from Trinity Lutheran in Coleman, where he had served for ten years. Pastor was born in Appleton and spent his childhood in Milwaukee and three other places in Michigan where his father served as a pastor. Claudine was born and raised in Watertown, which is where they met while Pastor was attending Northwestern College. They were married in 1985 at Claudine s home church in Watertown. Claudine has been serving meals and making chocolate treats at Confections for Any Occasion in Theresa for twelve years. She has also been active in St. Paul s Choir and Handbells. She currently serves on the Flower Committee and helps with some tutoring in the school and directing the school s two handbell choirs. Pastor has also served the church-at-large in several ways during his ministry, including several terms as a circuit pastor. He is currently serving as the secretary of the Southeastern Wisconsin District of the WELS. Pastor and Claudine have five children. Sarah teaches pre-school at Good Shepherd Lutheran School in Omaha, Nebraska. Laura and her husband Kendall live in Norfolk, Nebraska, where he serves as the pastor of Shepherd of Peace Lutheran Church. She spends her days taking care of their son Logan (Pastor & Claudine s first grandchild), who was born at the end of July. Rachel lives in Mankato, Minnesota and will graduate from nursing school in June. She is also engaged to be married. Her wedding will be in Mankato on June 24. Maria is in her third year at Wisconsin Lutheran College pursuing a degree in English. Andrew is a senior at WLA, is active in music and drama, and is seriously considering attending Martin Luther College to study to be a pastor. 2
3 PARKING - Because we now have the off-street parking the village has been asking us to install for many years, the village has tarred over the lines for the diagonal parking on Clark Street. All parking on Clark Street should now be parallel parking, just like all the other streets in Brownsville. MEN S BIBLE STUDY and BREAKFAST - meets every other Friday at 7:00 a.m. at Bublitz s Restaurant. We enjoy breakfast and a discussion of articles in the current Forward in Christ. We ll meet next on Friday, October 23 (Please note that this is one week later than usual.) JOINT LADIES BIBLE STUDY - meets every other Monday evening at 7:00 at Bublitz s Restaurant in Lomira. The topic: Heirs Together, a look at what Scripture teaches about the roles of man and woman. The next meeting will be Monday, October 12. The course will be led by Mrs. Naomi Schmidt. She has copies of the book for anyone who needs one. The cost is $10.00 per book. JOINT PASTORAL CONFERENCE - Pastor Carter will be in Mishicot this Tuesday and Wednesday to attend a pastoral conference. This conference will include pastors from the Winnebago Conference of the Northern Wisconsin District and the Kettle Moraine Conference of the Southeastern Wisconsin District. Conferences like this give our pastors the opportunity to gather for worship and Bible study and to discuss other topics about the work they do together in God s kingdom. The main topic of this conference will be a study of the theological and practical aspects of worship, presented by Pastor Aaron Christie, a member of the WELS Commission on Worship and a member of the New Hymnal Committee. We pray that the Lord would bless this conference. LWMS FALL RALLY - The Dodge-Washington Circuit of the Lutheran Women s Missionary Society will hold its fall rally this Saturday, October 10 at St. Paul, Town Lomira. (Emanuel, Town Herman and Zion, Theresa will co-host.) The guest speaker will be Pastor Paul Prange, the administrator for WELS Ministerial Education and coordinator for Global Cross-Cultural Outreach. He ll speak about the way Martin Luther College is training future workers who will be able to connect with students and families in cross-cultural ministries. The rally will begin with an opening devotion at 9:00. Registration will begin at 8:30. The speaker s presentation will begin at 9:30. A lunch will be served at 12:00 noon. An offering of non-perishable food items to support our Seminary students will also be gathered. There is a sign-up sheet in the church entrance. NEWS from ST. PAUL S SCHOOL Hot Lunch Help - One of the challenges of operating a smaller school is that there is a smaller pool of parents available to help with projects and activities. We re especially noticing that this year trying to find helpers for the Hot Lunch program. There is a calendar/sign-up sheet on the small bulletin board in the school hallway next to Room 2. Helping involves serving the meal that was prepared by the hot lunch committee, providing a dessert, and washing dishes and cleaning up after. You can plan on being here from about 11:00 till 1:00. If you have any questions, please speak to Tanya Wells or Kayla Steger. Chapel Services - The school invites everyone to join them for the weekly chapel services, normally held Wednesday mornings at 8:10. The theme for this year s chapel services is: Songs from the Bible. Each devotion focuses on several 3
4 verses from one of the psalms or one of the other songs in Scripture. A mission offering is gathered each week. Offerings for the first quarter have been designated for the WELS mission to the Apache nation in Arizona. Note: Because Pastor Carter will be at the conference on Wednesday, this week s chapel service has been moved to Thursday morning at 8:10. Make a Difference Day - We d like to help a number of folks with their leaf raking this fall. If you, or someone you know, would benefit from this kind of help, contact any of the school parents or faculty. Discontinuing After School Care - So far this school year, one or two students have been in the after school care program each day. This is not enough for the program to be able to support itself. We re not sure whether this happened because several families have outgrown the need for after school care or because the Lomira School District has now begun its own after school care program. Announcements have gone out to the families that have been using the program. The last day will be this Friday, October 9. Hearing the Word of the Lord Sep 27 YTD Avg. Pct.
