1 Building Nursing Leadership: A Story of Collaboration Judee Berg MS RN FACHE Deloras Jones MSN RN Katie Kessler MSN RN Carole Stacy MSN MA RN Objectives Utilization of a collaborative approach to develop a leadership program for nurse managers Implementation of a curriculum based on national leadership standards in diverse settings. Collaboration Definitions Two or more parties work jointly towards a common goal. The Action of working with someone to produce something. Collaboration is the active circling around common problems, identifying common issues and applying resources that individual collaborators bring to the table from their respective areas of experience and discipline. It is the problem identification, an exhaustive effort at alternative solutions from a variety of perspectives, and a working toward solutions that individuals could not have imagined on their own. 1

4 The Michigan Experience Michigan Center for Nursing (MCN) developed a PIN V grant proposal Leading Toward Tomorrow Foundation Partners Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation (BCBSM) and the Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan (CFSEM) Awarded PIN grant in 2010 Decision to build or buy content. The Process MCN contacted California Institute for Nursing and Health Care (CINHC) regarding purchasing Foundation for Leadership Excellence curriculum Discussions initiated Formal proposal sent and accepted MI Project Manager attended CA program All CA resources shared with MI Adaptation for MI 8 days total, 3 days, 3 days and 2 days spaced 6 weeks apart (5 6 months total) Plan was for 2 cohorts of 25; Cohort 1(35), Cohort 2 (43), Cohort 3 (20 and climbing) Increased content and time on finance Added a project, content on project management and presentation skills Plan to continue the 8 sessions with less time between sessions 4
5 The Collaboration The Forum of State Nursing Workforce Centers has as their Mission To provide a sustainable network for collaboration and communication among statewide nursing workforce entities.
