3 Dear Readers, School doors closing, family and friends arriving from overseas, sizzling temperatures, and longer daylight hours all equate to Summer time and Fun, fun, fun. And yes, sounds of laughter, music and water sports fill all of our remarkable beaches, transforming them into never ending summer escapades. Summer this year will be even more magical as our slice of the world will host the most prominent cultural festival of the Caribbean: CAR- IFESTA. August is sure to be special as many carousers from diverse countries are expected to descend on the island to partake in the festivities. As you flip through this issue of Magic Haiti you will become acquainted with women who are excelling in a non-traditional setting and meet an author who emerged from a large family which has penned many books. In addition, you will get to know a candle maker, a painter, and a fast food eatery which offers delicious, fresh, and unique dishes in record time. The goal of the magazine is to share many different aspects of our culture so that you can delve into and experience the vibrancy of this remarkable island. 5 Mrs. Stephanie Balmir Villedrouin Minister of Tourism Dear Readers, This month, Haiti was host to a great event in the Caribbean tourism industry. By organizing the 58th statutory meeting of the Tourism Commission for the Americas, our country showed that it is well positioned to welcome tourists. Everyone was satisfied with the work done. This crowning moment between colleagues, who are tourism bureaucrats of different governments in the hemisphere and worldwide industry authorities, brought us a remarkable solidarity and recognition of our efforts in recent years. It was concluded by a statement from WTO member states of the Caribbean. It was a beautiful page of history in the resurgence of our tourism. Already, we can rejoice that in August, that CARIFESTA, a large festival which will bring together various Caribbean artists and craftsmen. The twelfth edition of CARIFESTA that we will host here at home, will offer us the opportunity, in an atmosphere of diversity and friendship between Caribbean brothers, to sell our destination. It will comprise welcoming more than a delegation of twenty, approximately 2,000 people throughout the cities of Port-au-Prince, Gonaïves, Les Cayes, and Jacmel. Music, theater, and dance performances as well as exhibitions of arts and craft and films from all the countries of the Caribbean, are the core of this festival. On the other hand, we are constantly promoting Haiti in the North American diaspora. After the launch of our campaign #ExperienceIT currently airing in the states of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut in the United States, then we had the great honor to travel to the metropolis this time for a "Road Show "of Haiti. All this in order to attract new visitors to our destination. Finally, this is also the time for the preparation of the high season. As in all countries with a tropical climate, summer is the best time to visit. We expect to receive more visitors throughout our waterfalls, our sunny beaches, our high-end hotels, our fêtes champêtres, and other major events that are organized during this period. Our visitors can expect to enjoy what is best in the soul of the Caribbean. Haiti is ready to receive you once again, do not hesitate to come and live the experience. Ayiti se la pouw la!!! La douzième édition de CARIFESTA que l on reçoit, ici au pays, va nous offrir l opportunité, dans une ambiance de diversité et de convivialité entre frères caribéens, de vendre notre destination. Il s agira d accueillir plus d une vingtaine de délégation d environ 2000 personnes à travers les villes de Port-au-Prince, Gonaïves, Cayes et Jacmel. Des performances dans la musique, le théâtre, la danse et des expositions d œuvres artisanales et cinématographiques de tous les pays de la Caraïbe, vont constituer le socle de ce festival. D un autre cote, nous promouvons sans cesse Haïti dans la diaspora nord-américaine. 6 Lamanjay Eatz A Fusion of Fresh, Yummy and Quick By Rachele Viard Photos by Junior Plesius Louis Foodie that I am, I m surprised it took me as long as it did to finally make the trek to Eatz, a fairly new spot on the culinary scene in Haiti and wow is it yummy! I had the chance to look around, get a bite to eat and I had a great experience. I heard a lot of people speak of Eatz, but I was pleasantly surprised upon my arrival. Business partners Jean-Marc Nouaisser, Stephanie Ganthier and Luisa Garcia have created a unique nest for themselves. As I read the menu it was as though I was watching a Food Network competition where simple dishes had to be taken up a notch and with time being of the essence fast, fast, fast. 7 Greek deli, and my sense of smell being bombarded by the fragrant aromas which inevitably lure you in to indulge. I digressed a little, but had to. Let s get back to the gyros, one can pick from beef, chicken, lamb, or even a grilled veggie gyro. They make fresh bread daily. Some I really have missed over the years since I have been here, my favorite the Tomato Parmesan. They also produce Rosemary and Garlic, Oregano, and Black Olives. When ordering a sandwich, you get to choose the bread of your choice. In addition, they are known for their smoothies. They have power smoothies, a slimming smoothie, a cold fighting one, or an energy blast, the best distinct menu fascinating. Imagine a menu which features timeless favorites such as hamburgers and hot dogs cooked so many diverse ways. Does one opt for the Brazilian burger or the Country burger or better yet the Eatz Juicy burger? By the way you can have any of them with chicken instead. As for the hot dog, you can have it the traditional way, or a Polish one which is loaded with a Polish sausage and shredded cheese. Other unusual menu items include a breakfast burrito, hot fresh New York style bagels, Chicken Parmesan sandwich, pastrami queen sandwich, and Eatz s very own beef pepito sandwich. As I enjoyed a brightly colored and delicious Mexican salad as well as a savory chicken parmesan sandwich, I had the chance to sit down with Stephanie who shared some insights into the concept behind the eatery. When opening Eatz in December 2014, they wanted to offer their patrons menu items that were out of the ordinary." It s clear from speaking with Stephanie that keeping an eye on the details is very important to them, and that customer satisfaction is key. With fresh made bread in house, as well as fruit and veggie options to create your own perfect super juice! Also available kids meals with toys and all for the younger diners to enjoy while they eat. With quick service, and a friendly wait staff they are doing things right at Eatz. And when you thinking of fast food, fresh or light might not come to mind, but rest assured that at Eatz it s all about using fresh ingredients, and from your first bite it will be evident. 9 AUG Port-au-Prince, Jacmel, Cap Haitien, Gonaives & Les Cayes The Region s Premier Cultural Event This year Haiti will host CARIFESTA beginning August 21 and culminating on August 30, 2015, the largest cultural and artistic event organized in the Caribbean. This remarkable festival whose theme this year is "Our roots, our culture, our common future", will include more than 20 countries and all forms of expression of the Caribbean and Latin America region. CARIFESTA is a multicultural and international large-scale event which is increasingly including more countries in other continents. Performances and shows will take place in Port-au- Prince, Jacmel, Cap-Haitien, Gonaïves, and Les Cayes. All disciplines will be showcased: dance, gastronomy, fashion, film, visual arts, literature, music, theater, crafts, and painting. The Committee is working tirelessly to finalize the program. Detailed plans for logistics, venues festival sites, and to welcome foreign participants have been developed. Requests for information from foreign countries wishing to participate are received daily. Everything is in place and we invite everyone to come and spend an unforgettable time in Haiti which will become a truly popular regional stage bubbling with artistic and cultural activities for all tastes, says Elsa Baussan, Committee Chair. Occide Jeanty Square, newly rebuilt, will host the opening and closing ceremonies with Haitian and Caribbean headliners, different types of dance shows and super concerts. The Grand Market in the heart of Champ de Mars at the Artists Place will be the main attraction with craft exhibitions, visual arts, demonstration and public workshops in situ pottery, drawings, jewelry making, basket weaving, etc. This space will also house a special area dedicated to Caribbean cuisine, presentation of Caribbean designers creations and ongoing entertainment on 2 stages. Literature and cinema will also be showcased: documentaries, feature films, comedies, and a book fair focusing on history and culture theme of the festival will also be on the program. For ethnography enthusiasts, the Bureau of Ethnology will be the place to visit. It will offer cultural presentations in its gardens, symposiums as well as exhibitions. 10 Words in Print Évelyne Trouillot Rediscovering Haiti's history through writing By Regine Theodat Photos by Ludmillo D. Pierre From a family stocked to the brim with writers, Évelyne Trouillot's talent is definitely instinctually borne. Her works are closely intertwined with her childhood, as her father always encouraged her and her siblings to communicate and express themselves orally and in writing. It is no coincidence that all her brothers and sister are also published writers. They include novelist Lyonel Trouillot; Michel-Rolph Trouillot, renowned anthropologist and historian; and Jocelyne Trouillot, political scientist, Creole scholar, and children s book author. Évelyne left Haiti at an early age to study in the United States, but returned home in the early 1980s and has been teaching and writing ever since. I have been writing for as long as I can remember, and my first work was published in I write romance, short stories, poems, essays, I even write for hire, says the mother of two daughters. "Many things inspire me, but one theme I ve noticed is that I particularly like to write about Haitian history, the everyday lives and the capabilities of human compassion. Her love for history comes from her childhood nurture by two historians, her father and her uncle. It also stems from her journey to better understand the social questions surrounding her and her native land. Her passion for history and the human spirit is evident in her first novel, Rosalie L'Infame, which takes place in Santo Domingo in the 1750s and provides the reader with a look at slaves as individuals with their strengths, weaknesses, courage, and distress. Her depiction of the courage and dignity of the human spirit facing an inhuman situation struck a chord in young and adult readers alike. Happy and painful memories from her childhood are present in her Parlez-moi d amour, stories written more than 30 years after the dictatorship. For the author, history is sometimes 8 MAGIC HAITI MAY / JUNE 2015

11 disconcerting, but always needs to be told. In her stories, she rediscovered herself while also facing truths that were not always positive. Her novel Bleu de l ile (Blue Island), was the recipient of the prestigious Beaumarchais Prize, a literary honor given to Caribbean playwrights. In 2013, she published Absences sans frontières, which was also wellreceived. In addition to being a writer and teacher, Évelyne is the president of the 2015 selection committee for a notable prize awarded by the largest Haitian book company (Deschamps). She also co-founded, with her siblings, a Cultural Center after the earthquake. It is no wonder that she would have been given the rare opportunity to be part of the Words Without Borders movement, an organization that takes works in print and translates them so that people around the world can enjoy them, I may never visit a country, but just from reading about it, I can learn so much about their culture." She has four translated works on the Words Without Borders website. As our interview comes to an end, she leaves me with this parting message. "Part of being in the art of writing is learning to appreciate all types of writers from different genres and different countries. You can learn so much about a culture from its arts in particular. I encourage Magic Haiti readers traveling to Haiti to read some of our authors. Their works can provide a context for the place you are visiting, beyond the stereotypes/clichés and problems, so that you may understand the complexity of our country." 12 Artmosphere Damas Porcena A few months ago, I visited a gallery in Pétion-Ville. Amongst the beautiful works of art that were displayed, very well-crafted frames caught my eye. I was amazed at how proportional and oddly artistic they were. I asked for more information and was lead to Damas Porcena. Damas s artistic name is Dams, and his precision for restoration work is only Figure Abstraction Article by Regine Theodat Photos by Ludmillo D. Pierre matched by his brilliance as a painter. I arrived at his workshop called Atelier Contraste in Tabarre and immediately fell in love with the framed intricate door at the entrance. What waited inside was more breathtaking art work. The artist describes his style as Figure Abstraction, which is an artistic description for combining abstract with figurative elements. As he explained, I began to understand. From afar, the work seems 10 MAGIC HAITI MAY / JUNE 2015

13 "The balance and equilibrium of the creation is one of the most important elements of a masterpiece," abstract, but a more inquisitive look will reveal clear figures. Dams, like many artists started out by doodling in his books while in school. He developed as an artist by studying at the national art school in Port-au-Prince. As he grew as a painter, Dams also explored other mediums including photography and restoration. These three mediums of art create the vision for Atelier Contraste, a name chosen because he believes that all art should seek to contrast. "The balance and equilibrium of the creation is one of the most important elements of a masterpiece," he explains to me. The artistic eye that balances figure abstraction and contrast together make Dams quite MAY / JUNE 2015 MAGIC HAITI 11

14 the artist to look out for in the next 10 years. The artistic diversity of his work is palpable, and he finds inspiration from anything, from an argument he overhears on the street to an interaction with a person. Art is second nature to me now, it is like driving the same route home. At first you have to guide yourself, but after a while you just drive. He paints about 8 paintings a month and has sold more than 1,000 pieces during his 14 year career. Pierre Rather than giving fish, I have always been a firm believer of teaching people how to fish. And Atelier 83 shares this same belief. This vocational center empowers women by teaching them not only how to create things using their hands, but 14 MAGIC HAITI MAY / JUNE 2015

17 and entrepreneurship. They are also afforded internship opportunities. Hands-on training in wood and iron carpentry; sewing; serigraphy; and painting also takes place. Atelier 83 has developed partnerships with Haifu who designs with the furniture they fabricate. Les Fréres Salesiens provides training, ENARTS conducts training sessions on papier mache, serigraphy and painting, and CAFEM business training. They learn a trade. For the staff at Atelier, this is not just a job, this is their life. Their passion is evident in the quality of every piece. I visited Atelier 83 to learn about the initiative, and walked away with lessons that will last a lifetime. As I arrived, I was greeted with warm smiles and kind words. While touring the atelier, I witnessed the care and attention given to each individual. I had the opportunity to sit down with its director, Dr. Marie Deschamps, and its administrator, Jean Sebastien Bayard, to discuss their mission and future plans. They repeatthe management skills they'll need to survive. Atelier 83 doesn't only give them a meal for the day, it provides them with tools to feed themselves for life. Atelier 83 started as a technical school pilot program in 2013 and has trained more than 500 women. The same year, Atelier 83 participated in the Salon du Cadeaux at Karibe Hotel and won Best Booth. The Atelier empowers economically disadvantaged women, mostly single mothers, by providing them with training in business, marketing "Some women were making beautiful bags. I felt like a kid in a candy store" edly mentioned, "The most important thing at Atelier 83 is quality and innovation." But it does not stop with woodwork. Some women were making beautiful bags. I felt like a kid in a candy store. They were preparing for an upcoming exposition and there were beautiful things everywhere. From the careful stitching on the beach bags to the detailed handpainted masks, it was fascinating to see the level of quality in every product. And even more extraordinary to know that just months or even weeks ago, these were battered women coming here for help. A label on each piece tells the story of the woman who created it. Currently funded by the French Embassy, Atelier 83 also takes special orders for furniture and other products. This vocational center is looking to empower more women to fish on their own and survive by building relationships in Haiti and around the world. 18 I mentioned the lessons I walked away with. One such lesson is oftentimes, I've associated woodwork as being the work of men. It was a conceptbreaker seeing the women at Atelier making beautiful wood pieces. When I asked Dr. Deschamps what she would like the world to know, with bright eyes and a wide smile, she said, I want them to know that we are here, that we are open for business and ready to compete." 20 Spotlight Gérard Fombrun A Multi-talented Creative Soul By Natalie Jolivert Photos courtesy of Moulin-sur-Mer I am the happiest man on earth. I am blessed and pampered by fate." These were sayings that Gérard Fombrun shared with one and all. Fombrun took his last breath on February 1, 2015 at the age of 88, a few hours after his beloved Ogier Fombrun Museum officially reopened to the public. This initiative so close to his heart was headed by his daughter, Mireille, who says that her father was her source of inspiration. The historical museum stands proudly on the sites of Moulinsur-Mer, a seaside resorts which he built while conserving its historical legacy. An authentic stone aqueduct continues to run water to a gigantic 20 feet wooden wheel which was used to extract the juice from the cane. «Moulin-sur-Mer, le moulin de nos coeurs. Moulin-Sur-Mer, le paradis» Those lyrics, sung by Joel Widmayer, are one of the longest running commercial jingles which over the years encouraged vacationers to reach the Côte des Arcadins and enjoy a piece of Haitian history, sun, and beach at Moulin-sur-Mer. A dream, a paradise, Moulin-sur-Mer is Fombrun s greatest accomplishment. The Haitian 18 MAGIC HAITI MAY / JUNE 2015

21 Habitation Ogier, he believed that it had potential. As a result he purchased the land in 1977, which he restored and built the Moulin-sur- Mer complex. The historical importance of the ruins and the time period they represent, were too great to disregard, prompting the patriarch and his family to embark on a generations-long mission to preserve the site while simultaneously educating the public about the history of Haiti and the plight of its slaves. The main building, which was used to process sugarcane, now houses a collection of authentic historical objects. Those objects recount the history of Haiti from the pre- Colombian era to colonial times of 1794, when Haiti used to be the largest producer of sugar in the Caribbean. The beach resort surrounded by colorful lush gardens and foliage offers a peaceful haven for families architect and sculptor had a prolific career and an insightful vision. Moulin-sur-Mer was his paradise. Built in 1760 by Frenchman Guillaume Ogier, the Habitation Ogier was abandoned during the Haitian revolution ( ). It is one of the very few sugar plantations to have survived the ravages of the Haitian revolution. When Fombrun stumbled across the ruins of and friends to enjoy. As part of its architecture, the rooms and the hotel's common areas are a mixture of Spanish hacienda style and vernacular Gingerbread house style. Born on January 21, 1927, Fombrun was the son of Senator Charles Fombrun and Maria Saint-Léger Perrier. He was the seventh in a family of eleven children. 22 which stands for Gérard Fombrun Construction upon his return from Puerto Rico where he worked for a few years. Inspired by Gingerbread houses, the architect developed a very personal style, which resulted in a new aesthetic and new approach among emerging young architects. He often tried to incorporate architectural elements from the Gingerbreads, which consists of colorful wood lattice details, high ceilings, multiple tall doors, openings and porches. His most important projects were the construction of the main naval port of Portau-Prince, the International Airport Toussaint Louverture in Port-au-Prince, the Ciné Impérial, a movie theater located in Delmas, the renovation of Habitation Ogier Fombrun, and the construction of Moulin-sur-Mer. Gérard Fombrun is also an accomplished sculptor. Many of his sculptures were cast in bronze and sold to collectors abroad and in Haiti. Some of his metal sculptures from his latest production are scattered throughout the gardens of Moulin-sur-Mer. In addition to being an innovative architect, accomplished sculptor, Fombrun was passionate about Haiti s history, literature and poetry, and through this passion he also penned some books, "And Haiti Came to the World", and "For the rebirth of Prestige and Hope." In his career, he has always aspired to make both ancient and modern-day Haiti come together in active learning ways. As a father and proud Haitian patriot, he inspired all his children to return to Haiti once they obtained their college degrees. Today, they are all involved in keeping Moulinsur-Mer as a historical site as well as a beach resort. They aim to keep their father s architectural legacy alive. What I learned from my father was to savor every second of life that you have the privilege to live. Always stay eternally young. He would say that a youthful spirit is not measured by age, but by the happiness that you bring to those around you. With his sharpened sense for modernity, a cultivated mind, a man of culture, and fervent patriot, Fombrun s love for his culture and country was evident in all of his works and the messages and life lessons that he passed on to his children and all the time he spent sharing his knowledge with all the youth who visited the museum.
