1 Town of Gordonsville, Virginia Agenda Item Summary June 2011 AGENDA ITEM 12 Town Manager s Report AGENDA TITLE: Town Manager s Report PRESENTER: Town Manager DISPOSITION: [ ] Action Required [ ] For Discussion [ ] Consent Agenda [ ] Closed Session [X] Informational ATTACHMENTS: [ X ] yes [ ] no Baker Street Sidewalk Project: Public Works has crossed Cadmus Drive and has poured a section of sidewalk from the Cadmus/Baker intersection towards Main Street. We are in the process of evaluating the section between East Street and Cadmus that has not been poured. Staff feels that we may be able to install the sidewalk within existing right of way. Code Codification: Staff was unable to review the draft Code last month. We anticipate completing our review by the end of July. Council must adopt the codified code by ordinance after holding a public hearing. A public hearing will be scheduled after staff receives the corrections from Municipal Code. Dix Memorial Pool: Dix Memorial Pool Committee: The Dix Memorial Pool Committee is in the process of acquiring a preliminary site plan for a possible pool renovation. They are also pursuing the idea of applying for 501(c)(3) status. Learn to Swim Program: Fifty-four children have registered for swimming lessons for the 2011 season. The first session has been completed. The Town has awarded 19 BH-JSL learn to swim scholarships. Dix Memorial Pool Committee has received $250 towards funding for the Learn to Swim Punch Pass Program. The money is being used to purchase 12-visit punch passes for scholarship recipients. World s Largest Swimming Lesson: Dix Memorial Pool participated in the June 14 world s largest swimming lesson that was promoted by the USA Swimming Make a Splash initiative. The purpose of the event was to set a new Guinness World Record to draw attention to the vital importance of teaching children to swim to prevent childhood drowning. Gordonsville swim team: Staff has contacted the Jefferson Swim League (JSL) about starting another swim team at Dix Memorial Pool. Teams wishing to join the JSL must have an anticipated roster of at least 40 swimmers. A request in writing must be submitted to JSL by January 15 th. Upon acceptance the new team will be required to deposit $500 which will be refunded at the end of their June, 2011 Town Manager s Report Page 1 of 3

2 second consecutive season of active participation. Staff has posted a petition at the pool for individuals to sign if they are interested in participating in a Gordonsville swim team. Gordonsville Visitor Information Center (GVIC): We anticipate that renovations of the building will be completed by early July. Internet, phone, and cable are available to the facility. The sign for the new visitor center has been completed. Staff will hang the sign once the opening date has been determined. Greater Gordonsville is still seeking donations to help off-set the cost of the interior improvements to the building and they are soliciting volunteers to work at the center. Orange County Tourism has provided the visitor center with some starter brochures. Staff is developing an area in Town Hall where visitors can obtain information in the event that the visitor center is closed. JTHG Certified Tourism Ambassador Class: The Town hosted a Certified Tourism Ambassador Class here at Town Hall on Wednesday, June 1 st. Sister City International Program: Staff is in the process of preparing the documents (in English and French) needed to formalize the Town of Gordonsville s sister city relationship with Thore -la- Rochette through the Sister City International Program. We anticipate having information for presentation to Town Council in September. TEA-21 projects: Depot Phase III: The Historic Gordonsville, Inc. (HGI) Depot committee recently visited another similar TEA-21 project. The Committee is in the process of scheduling a meeting with the Department of Historic Resources. HGI has covered the Depot roof with a tarp to prevent further water damage. Downtown Streetscape Project: Staff is in the process of arranging a Streetscape Committee meeting. 100% complete plans will be submitted to VDOT sometime after the Committee meeting. Announcements of awards for the FY11-12 funding cycle are due out in June. Staff learned that there was additional funding available with this cycle and we submitted an amended grant request for $896,740. This should be enough funding to complete phase II of construction. TOOT ridership: The May 2011 TOOT ridership numbers are attached to the end of this report. June, 2011 Town Manager s Report Page 2 of 3
