3 Introduction The main purpose of this directory is to help individuals find services such as dental, vision and podiatry that have been lost because of cuts due to the ongoing State budget crisis. Secondly, we also looked at finding other resources that will help people get through emergencies or crises in their life such as food banks, emergency loans or low cost services. Lastly, we wanted to help people find social and recreation programs that will enhance their life and well being. We understand that there are agencies and/or programs missing from this directory; if you have something that you believe would be beneficial for people needing assistance in these hard times please forward it to We have not included agencies and/or program that are vendored by the regional centers as we wanted to find generic services that are accessible to everyone in the community. We organized the listings by Regional Center so that readers can find resources that are geographically nearby. Individual entries are placed in a particular Regional Center area by zip codes using If you do not have access to a computer in your home, most local libraries have computers available for internet access free of charge. Look here You will notice places within this directory where it will say for PDF file click here, this is for the electronic version that you will be able to download from the State Council on Developmental Disabilities, Area Board X website at A very good resource is the 211 of County resources or if you have access to the Rainbow Resource Directory, this will be beneficial also. It is hoped that this directory will be useful for individuals with and without disabilities and as well as professionals who help others. Please note that with the continuing budget crisis at the municipal, county and state levels more services and/or hours of services may be cut. The services and hours listed in this directory were correct at the time of publishing. When accessing any of these services call or go online to confirm their availability. 3

4 Community Supports Financial Services Credit unions can be an economical way of doing banking. Most credit unions have free or low cost checking or saving accounts. Some credit unions have restrictions on who is eligible to be a member and others allow almost everyone. One drawback to credit unions is that they have very few branches if you have to do in-person business. They have fewer ATMs than the major banks, but if your credit union is part of the CO-OP System, you can use other credit union ATMs and not be charged a fee. Credit unions are financial institutions formed by an organized group of people with a common bond. Members of credit unions pool their assets to provide loans and other financial services to each other. Credit unions differ from other banks in several ways: Credit Unions Other Financial Institutions Not-for-profit cooperatives Owned by outside stockholders Owned by members Owned by outside stockholders Operated by mostly volunteer boards Controlled by paid boards These factors allow credit unions to pay dividends to their members (not shareholders) and offer them lower loan rates, higher savings rates and fewer service fees. 28 Social/Recreational Services Tips for finding things to do Pick a search engine that you like (Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc) and start there. Enter key words such as Free Art Show Los Angeles County. Here are some other ideas: City Websites. These websites hold a wealth of information and most cities host some free and/or low cost events and classes. Most city sites have a community calendar or event calendar. Check it for events. Also check the city website s Parks and Recreation page for events and classes. For a good example of a city website go to Library Websites. There are often links to the library websites on the city pages. Or just use your search engine (ie Google Whittier Library ) to find the site. As with the city pages, there is usually an event calendar you can view. Free Event Websites. There are several websites that list free/low cost events in geographical areas. One example is LA Free Bee at Another is LA Okay at You can find others by using your search engine (ie Google Free Temple City events ) Ethnic/Cultural Websites: There are many websites devoted to specific cultures in the Los Angeles area. For instance there is Latino LA! at These sites usually include an event calendar or list activities/classes. Once again, use your search engine with key words (ie Google Vietnamese events San Marino ) to begin. Local Points of Interest: Los Angeles County s website has an Arts and Rec page It is a good place to start, again use their search box to explore with key words like museum dance or swimming Also check out websites for know landmarks, theme parks, etc for free offers (Los Angeles County Museum of Art has Family Free Days with free art classes for kids, Huntington Gardens have Free Tuesdays, etc) Local Newspaper/TV News Websites: Los Angeles Times, Pasadena Star News, KNBC 4, etc all have community event pages Subscribe to a RSS : (most commonly translated as "Really Simple Syndication" but sometimes "Rich Site Summary") for updates to your website readers who want to subscribe to timely updates from favored websites. Most websites have the option to sign up for RSS. Then the website contacts you with info via your . Use a Search Engine Alert: Like a RSS. For example Google has Google Alerts, you can enter horseback riding los angeles and you will get alerts ed to you. 28
