COURSE DESCRIPTION This course will focus on addressing sports medicine and health care issues surrounding women across their lifespan from adolescence into adulthood and retirement. The course will address concepts surrounding musculoskeletal gender differences in rehabilitation and progressive changes during pregnancy and postpartum that may affect participation in activity and exercise. Lastly, health care issues throughout the female lifespan will be discussed, such as psychological considerations, pelvic floor dysfunction/ prolapse, immunology, and bone health. Interactive workshops will cover key areas to address the examination and treatment of injuries in female athletes, hip/spine connection, peripartum pelvic girdle dysfunction and diastasis recti abdominus, and musculoskeletal considerations during labor and delivery. WHO SHOULD ATTEND Physiatrists, Family Practice physicians, General Medicine internists, Obstetricians/ Gynecologists, Sports Medicine physicians, and Gastroenterologists; Nurse practitioners, Nurses; Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants; Athletic Trainers, Chiropractors, Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants, and Occupational Therapists. COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of the conference, participants will be able to: Identify anatomical and biomechanical risk factors for knee injury in the female athlete. Outline critical sex differences in the mechanism and treatment of injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Discuss the hip-spine syndrome; provide an update on the current research in this area, and how its relationship plays a role in the treatment of the active female. Recognize the interrelationship between nutrition, reproductive function, and bone health (The Female Athlete Triad) in the active female.
3 Review up-to-date research related to activity during pregnancy as well as pregnancy-related pelvic pain. Discuss the impact of biomechanical changes related to pregnancy and postpartum on maternal activity and function. Describe current trends in the surgical and non-surgical management for pelvic floor dysfunction and pelvic organ prolapse. Recognize issues impacting the participation of disabled women in activity and sports. Discuss rehabilitation management of special populations in women s health rehabilitation, including bone health. Outline psychological issues facing women across the lifespan with regards to musculoskeletal or women s health conditions. POST CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of the post-conference workshops, participants will be able to: Track 1 Women s Health Describe clinical anatomy of the female external bony pelvis, pelvic floor musculature, and abdominal musculature. Review the biomechanical changes that occur in the trunk and pelvis musculoskeletal system during pregnancy and postpartum. Perform an external and internal physical examination of the pelvic floor muscles. Assess and measure Diastasis Recti Abdominus. Review and visualize the action of the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles with realtime musculoskeletal ultrasound. Track 2 Musculoskeletal Discuss a variety of musculoskeletal patient cases and apply principles of musculoskeletal practice for optimal evidence based care Review concepts surrounding return to running and bone health in the premenopausal female Describe appropriate exercise prescription and participation in the pregnant female Differentiate discipline specific concepts for energy and nutrition management, imaging and rehabilitation in separate interdisciplinary patient cases FACULTY FROM THE REHABILITATION INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO AND NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY Suzanne Aceron Badillo, PT, WCS Clinical Program Director, RIC, Women s Health Rehabilitation Program. 12 POST-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP TRACK 1 Physical Examination of the Pelvis and Pelvic Floor/Musculoskeletal Ultrasound for Physicians, Nurse Practitioners and Allied Health Professionals The core muscles are key in providing functional trunk stability, continence, and proper respiratory function. During pregnancy and postpartum, the core undergoes dramatic changes and trauma that can affect a woman s function. This workshop will explore the anatomical and biomechanical changes that occur in these core muscles in women during the peripartum period. Interactive labs will include instruction on the basic abdominal and internal/external pelvic floor muscle examination with live female models and an introduction to the use of musculoskeletal real-time ultrasound to visualize these key core muscle groups.
