Rocket Man by Doug Smith Nuts Nuts turns it up a notch for Desiderio s Dinner-Theater. Impresario Jay Desiderio has tapped the Buffalo Theater Alliance for two of its most celebrated actors to stage what Rocket Man assesses as its frankest show ever. Hold the winks and nudges, Nuts is not for saplings. Diva Lisa Ludwig and stalwart Paul Palmisano, both making their Desiderio s debuts, co-star as a woman accused of manslaughter and the defender she chose over her parents personal preference. There s no doubt that she did it but the question is, is she sufficiently sane to stand trial? It s not a matter of beating the rap. Sane and convicted, she d do a dozen years. If found incompetent, she might never walk free again. Desiderio has integrated his superstars into his roundup of usual suspects, plus newcomer Lisa Hinca as the accused s mother. With all deference to the others, she about steals the show, although Ludwig certainly abets her with an early-on wail of Mama. First-rate work in any surroundings. Rose has had the misfortune to marry Arthur, whose dark nature is first hinted at ( people are really no different from dogs ), then specified by playwright Tom Topor and actor Brendan Cunningham, another Rembrandt of the slow revelation. David Marciniak plays the prosecutor, MarcJon Filippone the shrink with the axe to grind and the behind to cover, Dan Walker the imposing but casual judge. Jay Wollin stays in tune as the bailiff (not as much fun as Night Court s Bull, but he ll do) and Jacob Marciniak stays right on the game as the court stenographer, and gets a little encore as a reward. Ludwig s role is one to die for, full of twists and hidden agendas. Tears flow. Palmisano succeeds as the reluctant defender, with hardly a friend in the court. Rocket Man could almost smell the varnish in the imposing set and the costuming, emphasis on dark, is nearly flawless. The production, both performance and technical, is much better than the play itself. A vehicle for vital monologues, marvelously delivered, it strains credulity almost to the breaking point. Sure the defendant acts bizarrely from time to time, but there s not a shred of incompetence in the script. She shouldn t be here (the point, the playwright would insist). And any judge in any court would have gaveled these rants into the ether. So leave logic in your car, enjoy a terrific meal (soup to Nuts, so to speak) and consume some heavy, if implausible, drama for dessert. As dimming lights heralded the end on Opening Night, many rose with no prodding whatsoever from the bailiff. Nuts continues through mid-november at Desiderio s, 5827 Broadway, Lancaster. 3 Northwest Buffaloz Beat by Joe Bort Electric Bill Received my first ever $100 electric bill. To some that may not be much and to some it is so what. With all you are able to do with electric, it is a small price to pay for the convenience of flipping a switch for immediate power. All one has to do is be without power for even a couple of hours to realize all that it means to everyday life. And the power company knows that. Yes, it is a small price to pay for what it does, but is the price right? Here is Western New York we live less than 20 minutes from the largest natural power producing plant in the world, Niagara Falls. WNY was one of the first areas in the country to be exposed to electric back at the turn of the twentieth century. So do we benefit from that geography? The answer is no. If we did our electric bills would be about $20 a month as there would be no generating cost. As I understand it our power here is generated at the coal burning Huntley plant on River Road. That is on the way to Niagara Falls if you take the river route. Coal is expensive and burning it is a pollutant to the atmosphere. So why do we NOT get our electric from the huge, gigantic, power plant 20 miles away? My guess is that the first reason is money, and the second is politics. Being that they can get more money shipping the electric downstate to New York City than here, that is what is done. The demand is so great there that I imagine even as huge as the plant is in the Falls is at capacity. Hence we had to build a plant here to generate our own power. Make sense? Not to me. The second is politics. Unless you do not read the papers or watch the news, New York State is ruled by New York City politicians. Now that makes sense as population dictates the number of representatives. So it is only natural that the control is mostly downstate, unless the rest of the politicians from other areas unite. That does not happen so we live in a state that must abide by the fact we must cater to the whims of downstate New York. What we would need is someone who was willing to turn their back on the large power plant contributions, and be able to win in this area. One who would fight for our end of the State. That also is not going to happen. LOTS OF EARTHS Watched with interest on my favorite American Hero s channel some facts we do not think about. It was about aliens and before you go I do not believe in them, just listen to the facts. First, it started by saying there are billions of galaxies in the Universe. Each galaxy has millions of stars. Each star has planets revolving around them. So scientists estimate that with all those planets there are at least 100 million similar to earth in the Universe. That is a lot. Think about how technology on earth has changes in the last 100 years, 1,000 years, and 5,000 years. What if on one of the hundred million planets life as we know it advanced at a more accelerated pace? Not impossible and in all likelyhood may have happened. The ability to travel through space! This is the part I got a kick out of. If they were that advanced and could travel at the speed of light, why would they want to come here? What is there to gain on this earth that someone with that capacity and knowledge would want? We do not even get along with each other and almost constantly are at war somewhere in the world. Wars are fought on this globe for power, human and natural resources. Someone with those capabilities could go anywhere in space for whatever natural resources they need. They would not find it necessary to kill as many people as they can to gain power as we feel we must do here on earth. Human resources, why would they need them, they probably have robots or live on such a nice planet or planets if you knew about them you would want to go there. Maybe that is where we go when we pass on. Their life style could be Utopia. Bottom line is we do not have to worry about an alien invasion. There is nothing here that they would want. In fact some scientist feel they may have visited us and seen what was here and took off. Too many other planets to go to that are not so hostile. Not so defensive and ready to fight whoever. Hey they could come to my house for dinner. I am not hostile and my wife makes good lasagna. I would not mind and it to be fun to chat with them. Eight would be the limit, though. Dorothy would not be happy with a house full of aliens. com or find him on Facebook.com/joe.bortz.3

5 Columbus Day Celebrates Spirit of Discovery From page 1 observed in New York City, mainly due to the city s numerous ItalianAmerican residents, to celebrate the 300-year anniversary of the voyage. Although it is widely disputed by historians the world over, the general belief is that Columbus discovered the Americas. We all remember the saying from school, In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue. No one is certain exactly which island in the Caribbean he really discovered. And while it is still debated exactly where the explorer docked the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria, his three flagships, it is agreed that Christopher Columbus was at least here. Although it is a federally observed holiday, many states have given way to popular opinion and changed the mean- Happy Columbus Day ing behind the observance. In South Dakota, they celebrate Native American Day instead of Columbus Day. Hawaii calls their holiday Discoverer s Day, instead. Colorado, the first state to have a state-wide celebration for Columbus Day back in 1905, has protesters every year at their Denver Columbus Day parade. In spite of all the criticism and controversy, there is a deeper meaning behind this holiday. It really doesn t matter when people knew America existed. We already have a holiday for that. It s the Fourth of July. It doesn t matter who set foot here first. The Native Americans did, no question about that. Columbus Day is more about discovery. It s an idea that rings true even today, just as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, ring true for every American. Discovery is the belief that the unknown is still out there. That kind of imagination and determination created a country where everyone is entitled to selfexpression, freedom of religion and the right to vote.
