4 Bridgette Roman General Counsel, Senior Vice President and Secretary Community Choice Financial Inc. Education Undergraduate: The Ohio State University School: Duquesne University School of Associations American Bar Association; Ohio State Bar Association; Columbus Bar Association, co-chair of Bench-Bar Retreat (1995, 1997, 1999) and co-chair of Common Pleas Court Committee ( ); Association of Corporate Counsel Practice areas Prior to assuming my first in-house role, my practice was focused on commercial litigation. In my current role, I am involved in a broad variety of legal issues; everything from corporate governance to regulatory compliance to intellectual property protection. Types of clients represented Just one: Community Choice Financial Inc. and its subsidiaries Previous jobs Schottenstein Zox and Dunn (now Ice Miller) Cooper Tire & Rubber Company Family Husband, Michael Schwind (married 17 years) and stepson Brandon Schwind, head lacrosse coach at Michigan State University Two notable cases If I m good at my job, I resolve disputes before they turn into notable cases. A-V rated Since mid 1990s Q&A Why did you become an attorney? I have always had profound respect for American Constitutional history. The study of law seemed a natural next step given my interest in the Constitution. Once in law school, I was entirely bitten by the litigation bug and have never lost interest in the strategy and procedural elements that initially piqued my interest in litigation. What s your biggest challenge? I see change management as not only my biggest challenge, but a challenge for all organizations. Both the pace of change and its frequency seem to be growing exponentially year over year. How do you measure success? I ve embraced in-house practice because of the opportunity it presents to support a business whose mission I believe in, and to become intimately involved in the business and its future direction. This company provides needed services to its customers and we know customers like and appreciate those services. I consider it a privilege to advocate for the company and its customers continued access to those services. What trends do you see in your area of law? In the in-house world, a trend that I both see and embrace is the early involvement of the legal team in both long-term and even project planning. There is increasing recognition that lawyers bring a unique perspective and analysis to business issues, not just legal issues. If not law, what would be your dream job? I cannot imagine more of a dream job than the one I have but if I had to walk away from it, I would have to find something as equally challenging and exciting that would give me an opportunity to use my problemsolving and analytic skills. A-V rated More than 15 years Q&A Why did you become an attorney? The first reason: Watching Perry Mason reruns when I was seven years old and thinking it looked like fun. The second reason: I love competition and thinking on my feet, both of which are qualities you need to be a good trial lawyer. What s your biggest challenge? Dealing with high-conflict cases and very emotional people, and helping clients to make decisions in their own best interest. How do you measure success? My favorite definition comes from Emerson (paraphrasing here): To leave at least one life a little bit better because I was here. What trends do you see in your area of law? There will be more forms of alternative dispute resolution, as well as outsourcing of some legal services. If not law, what would be your dream job? I dreamed of being a trial lawyer, and here I am. Other dream jobs: Starring in a Broadway musical or owning a charming and successful bookstore. As a kid, I saw my dad practicing law and decided I wanted to follow in his footsteps. Being able to assist clients with important issues that impact their success was something that I thought would be very rewarding. What s your biggest challenge? The biggest challenge in my practice is adapting to ever changing tax law. Staying current with these changes and understanding the impact on clients requires a lot of time and effort, but it is an essential component of being able to deliver the highest quality tax advice. How do you measure success? Success is measured by the satisfaction of our clients and the growing demand for our services. Essentially, our success is measured by the success of our clients. If we help them to be successful, and do so in an effective and efficient manner, clients will reward us with more opportunities to help them meet their interests. What trends do you see in your area of law? In a tough economic climate, greater importance is being placed on tax planning for businesses, whether with respect to operations or transactions, in order to maximize net profits and gains. Tax lawyers are serving an increasing role for companies and are becoming more involved in all aspects of their planning. If not law, what would be your dream job? A-V rated since 2006 Q&A Why did you become an attorney? Out of a genuine interest in the various aspects that law intertwines with the business world, and a desire to fulfill the key role as an attorneyadvisor and advocate for the needs of business clients. What s your biggest challenge? It s the ever elusive work-life balance that afflicts all of us (attorneys and business professionals alike). How do you build and manage a successful legal practice, attend to internal and business/management issues of the firm, participate in outside endeavors and try to be a good spouse and father? How do you measure success? Professionally, it is measured by the successes of our clients, by providing or contributing to that successful result of a transaction or finding a solution to a challenging issue. Personally, it s enjoying time spent with family and being a part of their accomplishments. What trends do you see in your area of law? Locally, it will be a continuing focus on Downtown development and seeking further solutions to mesh/intertwine living and lifestyle issues with workplace settings and the challenge of transportation infrastructure (both mass and individual transportation). More broadly, I see challenges for the commercial retail development sector, and possibly office/work space. If not law, what would be your dream job? Probably something involving education, teaching possibly. But, medicine and health, exercise and wellness issues have always been issues that I m passionate about, and I could as easily see myself involved in something promoting better quality of life through a mix of those. Obtained the dismissal of a multi-million dollar product liability claim against a manufacturer of guardrails that service hundreds of thousands of miles of highway in various states. A-V rated since 2002 Q&A Why did you become an attorney? As far back as I can remember, my family has viewed service to others as the strongest calling for an individual. I knew I wanted a career that focused on helping others and in making a difference. What s your biggest challenge? We tend to be problem solvers. As is the case with most problems, if you get to it early, you have a much better chance to control it, limiting its potential impact and ultimate damage. How do you measure success? Personally, it s about my wife, Susie, and I being great parents to our children and providing a home that is not only protective, but also a source of strong learning so that they are prepared to make good decisions. For my business, I measure success in our ability to obtain the results for our clients that they deserve and providing a supportive atmosphere for our team of professionals at Hahn Loeser. What trends do you see in your area of law? Because of the information now available on the Internet, every business executive has to be aware constantly of all facets of their business. From a litigation perspective, my clients are much more aggressive about taking a case to trial where they have not done anything wrong. I m more than willing to help a client pursue every recourse available to find the right resolution. If not law, what would be your dream job? Tell Urban Meyer not to worry, but, like a lot of us, I d love to be head football coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes. A more genuine and realistic dream job is to be a high school football coach. I truly enjoy helping young people maximize their talents and helping them grow and mature during their formative years. K. 14 William A. Nolan Columbus Office Managing Partner Barnes & Thornburg LLP Education Undergraduate: Cornell University (1984) School: Harvard University (1989) Associations Ohio Management yers Association (immediate past chair); Ohio State Bar Association; Columbus Bar Association Practice areas Labor and employment; litigation Types of clients represented Businesses of all sizes, and executives needing employment and other agreements. Industries I have worked with most include manufacturing, education, nonprofits, construction, and health care. Previous jobs Squire Sanders & Dempsey, (partner ); Associate, Jones Day, ; Project Manager, Harvard Business School library, Family Married to Alicia Nolan since Twin sons Chris (University of Miami) and Thomas (Case Western) are college freshmen. Two notable cases: Getting my first injunction in a non-compete case as a senior associate. A particular investigation of alleged highlevel wrongdoing which I can t say much else about! Both were critical to the client, had a good result, were fast paced, and involved great colleagues. They are memorable not only as individual matters, but in retrospect they were foundations for two kinds of work I have done a lot of since. A-V rated since 2010 Q&A Why did you become an attorney? After college I considered law school and graduate study in political science. A poli sci professor arguing for the latter said that in law school they say, Here are the rules, now go play the game, and in graduate study they say, What is the game? I guess it backfired because law school sounded better when he put it that way! What s your biggest challenge? Whether representing a client or building an office, finding the perfect balance between aggressive and creative on the one hand, and time-tested nuts and bolts on the other. When we are able to meet that challenge, great things can happen. How do you measure success? Minute by minute: Is everything we do calculated to help us continue to build a vibrant and highly coordinated law office and firm? Longer term: When we stop and reflect at the end of each year, are we doing it? Medium-term goals of some metric by some date are needed for budgeting, but can be limiting if they are your primary focus. What trends do you see in your area of law? More and more employees who are protected by discrimination and other laws, an expanding range of working arrangements (compared to the traditional full time/fixed location model), and technology make the compliance environment more challenging every year for virtually all employers. If not law, what would be your dream job? Coaching 8- and 9-year-olds in soccer and basketball. So many kids drop out of sports shortly after this age, mainly because of adults who aren t thinking clearly. Many don t return and lose the lifetime benefits, to themselves and the organizations they are part of, of sports for fun. Frank A. Ray 89 E. Nationwide Boulevard, Suite 200 Frank A. I had made arrangements to photograph pilots preparing for the Vectren Dayton Air Show. Strapped in with a safety harness, I found myself nearly 41 South High St., Suite 3600 Thomas Mark Zaino State Taxation hanging out of an open-sided airplane photographing straight down as Sean D. Tucker flew the Oracle Challenger III acrobatic biplane over the control tower at Dayton International Airport. Military flight teams were grounded at the time because of federal budget cuts, so civilian pilots performed at the event. I was fortunate to capture the seasoned professionals as they practiced for the show. Cairns has been with The Dispatch for 16 months. ADAM CAIRNS The Zawaly Firm 6238 Inverurie Dr. W. When I arrived, Daniel Faltermaier was testing a mixture for making giant soap-film bubbles in a parking lot near the Columbus Metropolitan Library. The fact that Faltermaier was working in front of a black-and-white mural of silent-film actors Greta Garbo and John Gilbert added an artistic flair to the image. love the surreal quality of the photo of Parish Weatherspoon, 5, of Columbus, running through the mist from the fountain at Bicentennial Park at sunset. Parish and his family were enjoying the park on a warm spring day. Using a telephoto lens to compress the scene, I shot into the sunset to illuminate the water and mist and capture the silhouette. The photo embodies childlike wonder and playfulness, which appeals to me. F 41 South High Street 3500 Huntington Center John W. Zeiger Russell has been with The Dispatch for 25 years. The path to the football field, however, hasn t been an easy one. The Vetters once feared that Murphy, who is autistic and has Down syndrome, might have to be institutionalized because of cuts ERIC ALBRECHT in funding for Medicaid benefits. The Vetters and other parents sued the Ohio Department of Mental Health and the Department of Job and Family Services in federal court, arguing that the state was violating their right to obtain such benefits. The Parents League for Effective Autism Services won the case, and the state settled in late 2011, providing coverage to 123 children, including Murphy. Still, nothing comes easy for the young man including football. Official Don Alexander, however, lent a helping hand to Murphy a free safety for the Liberty Bulldogs as he set up on defense. It was uplifting to see others interact with Murphy, and I think this photograph helped capture that. Albrecht has been with The Dispatch for 28 years. Experience. Discover. Pursue.
