Taught criminal law, criminology and a seminar on community legal work. Community workshops were also conducted in the field of community safety, as part of the outreach programme of the school. INSTITUTE OF CRIMINOLOGY January to University of Cape Town December 1995 Research Associate. Responsible for the Institute's component on popular justice. Duties included teaching in the Honours and Master of Law programmes in the sphere of popular justice and supervision of student dissertations. I was also involved in research and writing in this field and in the provision of outreach programmes designed to train and empower communities engaged in regulating their own organs of popular justice. Also advised the Constitutional Assembly of the National Parliament and the Ministry of Justice of South Africa in conceptualising the idea of establishing a model of community courts in order to regulate popular justice mechanisms in the country. INSTITUTE OF CRIMINOLOGY January to University of Cape Town December 1994 Research Associate. Research associateship with the Institute of Criminology to conduct further research and training in the area of popular justice in the Eastern and Western Cape. Also worked on publications on popular justice. Other responsibilities included teaching in the honours programme of the department and occasional lectures at the law faculty. In addition, advice was provided to policy makers in the area of access to justice and regulation of organs of popular justice. INSTITUTE OF CRIMINOLOGY June to University of Cape Town December 1993 Visiting Research Fellow. Involvement in research projects on community conflict resolution in Guguletu and Langa. Organised a series of in-house seminars at the Institute of Criminology, tabled as "Winter Talks" and "Summer Talks", in the area of community policing and conflict resolution. COMMUNITY PEACE FOUNDATION March 1996 to Cape Town, South Africa December 1998 Academic Manager. Responsible for the consolidation and development of the academic programme of the Foundation. INDEPENDENT MEDIATION SERVICE OF SOUTH AFRICA August 1995 Cape Town, South Africa March to Consultant. Responsibilities included advising on and assisting with the coordination of the community policing training programme in the Western Cape. The process also involved designing a training package and developing a policy for promoting the programme. NICRO January to Cape Town September 1995 National Manager. Responsible for the research department of the organisation (formerly known as the National Institute for Crime and Inmates Rehabilitation) with special focus on developing policy on the issues of penal reform, alternatives to incarceration, community -police relations, and developmental welfare. Also coordinated the research policy and training of the organisation and assisted the staff (of approximately 200) in conducting research in the area of criminal justice. The role also required giving special briefings and advice to the National Director and Deputy Directors of the organisation. Other responsibilities included assisting in developing a policy on community safety/crime prevention for the organisation; and providing support and logistics in the processes of staff training and programme implementation. INDEPENDENT ELECTORAL COMMISSION April 1994 Cape Town, South Africa 9

10 Mediator. Member of the panel of mediatiors of the Department of Conflict Resolution of the Commission. Involved during the election period in solving conflicts in different communities arising out of the electoral process in South Africa's first democratic elections. WESTERN CAPE PEACE COMMITTEE March to Cape Town September 1994 Radio Producer. Responsible for producing two radio programmes: "Lets talk about peace" (on conflict resolution) and "Wake up civics!" (on the civic movement in the country). Both programmes were broadcast nationally on a weekly basis. COMMUNITY PEACE FOUNDATION February 1994 Cape Town to January 1995 Consultant. Advisor to the Community Empowerment Programme of the organisation, in the areas of training in community safety and community policing and policy development. Also assisted in drafting legislation and policy documents for a new police bill. NICRO February to Cape Town December 1994 National Consultant. Responsible for co-developing a national policy on research and publications for the organisation (formerly known as the National Institute for Crime and Inmates Rehabilitation). Also responsible for co-developing a policy on community safety and implementing a pilot programme in the communities of Mitchells Plain, Cape Town, and Stanger, KwaZulu/Natal. INDEPENDENT MEDIATION SERVICE November to OF SOUTH AFRICA (IMSSA) December 1993 Cape Town Project Consultant. Responsible for coordination of a training programme on community safety in a middle class community, Mandalay, in Mitchells Plain. The programme lasted two months. This included establishing a process of consultation with the community and designing a training programme for a community-based crime prevention strategy. WESTERN CAPE PEACE COMMITTEE September to Cape Town October 1993 Radio Producer. Responsible for the production of ten radio programmes focused on providing conflict resolution skills, broadcast on radio "Peace 91.3" during October

11 COMMUNITY PEACE FOUNDATION July to Cape Town December 1993 Project Coordinator. Responsible for the coordination of a six-month project to train delegates of the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) from the community of Guguletu in community policing. The project was divided into two parts: 1) the Community Policing Workshop Series, from August to September 1993; and 2) a three-month period session on implementation of ideas developed in the workshop series and for organising a broad forum between the community civic organisation and external institutions such as the South African Police. The work included supervision and mentoring of an additional facilitator in the area of community policing. INSTITUTE FOR A DEMOCRATIC March to ALTERNATIVE FOR SOUTH AFRICA (IDASA) August 1993 Port Elizabeth Facilitator and Advisor. Organised and facilitated the Community Courts Workshop Series for delegates of the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO), Eastern Cape Region, during March and April Organised a regional conference on community courts on May 1993, where SANCO launched its proposal on community courts and anti-crime committees. Also assisted on two additional projects on economic development policy for the Eastern Cape and on affirmative action. Workshops and conferences on these two projects were organised successfully. SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL CIVIC ORGANISTAION February 1993 (SANCO) Eastern Cape Region To May 1995 Advisor and Trainer. Assisted the civic body of the Eastern Cape in establishing a process of selfregulation of its organs of popular justice. This included multiple sessions of training and of drafting codes of conducts. The project evolved into a financial trust to assist in the process of establishing community structures and job creation. Most recently the position involved assisting the leadership of the organisation in making submissions to the Constitutional Assembly. BANDUNG PRODUCTIONS June 1989 to Channel Four, London July 1989 Researcher. Conducted research for a TV documentary entitled: "Puerto Rico, hidden colony, hidden struggle" which addressed contemporary political issues between Puerto Rico and the United States government. Provided assistance to the Training Department in developing and expanding the syllabus for the two-year paralegal training course. Organised and facilitated in-house workshops in the area of affirmative action, cross-cultural cooperation, mutual understanding and staff development. Provided assistance to the Community Relations Department in the area of community mediation and negotiation, including teaching in the paralegal training course and developing a manual for a model of mediation and negotiation specific to rural KwaZulu/Natal.
