2 In Ciências we teach, conduct research and give economic and social value to knowledge. Decision-making requires in-depth knowledge. This is the vision of Ciências. Ciências strives to achieve, at all levels, the highest possible quality of basic knowledge (in, Physics, Chemistry, Geology and Mathematics) applied to general areas of concern (Life and Health sciences, Earth sciences, sciences of the Universe and Materials science). Such applications are well supported by Mathematics, technologies and engineering: information technology, instrumentation, materials processing (at nano, micro, meso and macro scales, either biological, chemical or physicalbased), and the biogeochemistry of the Earth, energy and the environment. Post-graduate studies in Ciências encompass Masters, PhD programs and specialization studies. In general, training requires knowledge in several sciences. Ciências provides three general families of Masters. Continuity masters are designed to improve knowledge previously acquired in a corresponding 1 st cycle and can be the fastest way to train future researchers. The same applies to the 4 rd and 5 th year of the Integrated Masters. Complementary masters extend previous knowledge to interface areas, aiming to cope with the multidisciplinary nature of most of the job market. Finally, Specialization masters are designed for market niches and for specific economic or societal needs. The first contact that many students make with research occurs during their masters, because research units often take the best students into their research teams, enabling them to participate in R&D projects (in international, entrepreneurial or interchange programs). Students learn to invent the future, to question still unchallenged issues, to build and test hypotheses, to assess the value of their knowledge, and to understand that all decisions must be supported by the facts, duly interpreted with models and theories. PhD programs in Ciências are well supported by teaching and by the research of some 30 research units. Most of these units are funded by the Portuguese National Science Foundation (FCT) and are highly classified by international panels. Ciências is the most active school within the University of Lisbon in European programs of Research and Technological. Ciências is a partner in agreements between Portugal and US universities as well as universities from Portuguese-speaking countries. Ciências promotes bilateral and multilateral cooperation and all possible synergies between research and industry stemming from entrepreneurial partnerships and initiatives.

3 Postgraduate Studies at Ciências help students to develop the scientific and technical skills required for a challenging and dynamic professional activity, to cope with the needs of a demanding society, and to create opportunities for a flexible and sustained personal development according to the Ciências vision of the future.
