2 2013 COLLEGE AND CAREER EXPO We are excited that you are participating in this year s College & Career Expo! This is our 17 th annual event and, as in years past, the response from the business and education communities has been enthusiastic. We acknowledge and appreciate our Presenting Sponsor, Samsung Austin Semiconductor and out Title Sponsor, The Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce for their continued support. 100 exhibitors and 3,000 high school juniors and seniors from Central Texas area school districts and partner organizations will participate. Since 1997, approximately 34,000 students and more than 1,000 representatives from businesses, organizations, intuitions of higher education and the public sector have participated. 3 COLLEGE AND CAREER AWARENESS Career awareness activities help students investigate a variety of industries and allow companies to showcase opportunities. Think about how you can educate students about your industry with demonstrations, videos, displays, and interactive models. Get the students interested and keep them engaged. Colleges, Universities, trade schools and associations participating in the College and Career Expo make good partners for these activities. EXHIBITORS Exhibitors will be grouped by industry cluster with related educational institutions and associations. The Palmer Events Center exhibit hall is large. We therefore encourage exhibitors to display items that represent their industry and that will add appeal to photographs and video. BE CREATIVE! Your display area needs to attract today s 17 year old. For example, Austin EMS will bring an ambulance, and EMT s will talk with students about career opportunities in emergency medicine. Austin-area chefs and cooking instructors will provide demonstrations and talk about our local culinary schools where aspiring chefs learn tricks of the trades. Samsung has hosted a Bunny Suit relay race to demonstrate the difficulties of carrying wafers on a fabrication floor, and don t be surprised if you see robots cruising the center aisles. MANAGING THE CROWD Due to varied high school schedules, approximately 1,500 students will attend the Expo between 9:00am - 11:00am, and another 1,500 students will attend from 11:00am 1:00pm. Please try to have at least two (2) people from your organization to handle the rush! EXHIBITOR SET- UP Move-In the day before Wednesday, October 9th 1:30 AM 4:30 PM Move-In the day of Thursday, October 10 th 7:00 AM 8:30 AM The Palmer Events Center service yard closes at 8:45 AM The loading dock and service yard entrance is located just EAST of the South Lobby of Palmer Events Center at 900 Barton Springs Road; Austin, TX PLEASE NOTE: There are 80 parking spaces in the service yard for the first arrivers. It will be to your advantage to arrive in ample time to unload before the service yard closes. Once the service yard is full, the attendant will direct you to the Palmer Events Center garage. The cost to park in the garage is $7.00; those who pay in advance will receive a pass.

4 BOOTH SIZE All booths at the College and Career Expo are 10 x 10 ft. standard draped exhibit booths equipped with one (1) 6 ft. table and two (2) chairs. Booths are constructed with sturdy aluminum tubing with 8 ft. tall side divider. A 7 x 44 in. exhibitor sign will be provided. For additional booth space, tables and/or chairs contact Esther Johnson prior to the event day at or ejohnson@skillpointalliance.org. ELECTRICAL, TELEPHONE and INTERNET Place your order today! Day of charges will be CASH ONLY at the event center! Convention Center Utilities Services Information Packets are attached. DISCOUNT DEADLINE for electrical connections is Wednesday, September 25 th ; our office will provide your booth number to the Utility Coordinator. REFRESHMENTS Coffee, tea, and muffins will be provided between 8:00 AM 10:00 AM in the Exhibitor Lounge, located near the back exit of the Exhibit Hall. Iced tea will be available at 11:00am. Due to the increased costs of box lunches from the Convention Center Departments, and because our event ends at 1:00 PM, Skillpoint Alliance will not provide lunch for exhibitors. The Palmer Events Center provides an extensive concession area. Please feel free to bring your own water bottles and snacks. OUR APPRECIATION Students in classrooms today in the Austin area are our workforce of tomorrow. Successfully addressing our workforce challenge is important both for employers and for those who aspire to participate in the region s growing economy.

5 JOB OPENINGS Many of our young people have to work to help their families. If you have job openings that a high school junior or senior might apply for we encourage you to feature those at your booth. Suggestions: 1. Post a sign with large print on the drape behind your table. CURRENT JOB OPENINGS FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS 2. List the type of job openings and the qualifications. Full time, part time, temporary, internships, etc. Types of skills needed to apply for jobs at your company and/or organization. Types of short term training courses and/or certifications needed. 3. List the type of person you are seeking: Need a part time person will good customer service skills.
