Programme Overview Supporting the development of Ireland as an international centre of green finance, DCU Business School in association with the Summit Finuas Network and the Green IFSC initiative has developed this unique programme for finance and related professionals. The Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Energy Finance is a one-year part-time programme leading to an award which is gaining increasing recognition across the sector. The underlying philosophy of the Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Energy Finance is that the development of the human capital required to meet the needs of the emerging global green economy can best be harnessed through the integration of skills, knowledge and professional practice. The programme is delivered by leading academics and industry experts. The objective of the programme is to provide a broad and comprehensive overview of sustainable energy finance to support new business streams within investment banks, professional firms working in the broader green economy and companies which are developing renewable products and technologies. The programme prepares participants for advanced management and leadership in all areas of sustainable Irish green asset management and green enterprise firms are active all over the globe from China to Chile and Ireland to Africa and, with $10 billion in green assets managed or serviced, Ireland is already emerging as a world leader in green finance. 4 Programme Outline Programme Structure SEMESTER 1 Climate Change, Sustainability and Policy Climate Change and Markets Finance for Sustainability The programme is delivered on a part-time modular basis with attendance at Dublin City University on two-day blocks (Fridays and Saturdays, generally once a month) ensuring minimal disruption to work schedules while also respecting the personal time of participants. The programme has six taught modules. Assessment is a mixture of continuous assessment, action learning, presentations and exams. SEMESTER 2 Accounting and Taxation for Sustainability Legal Issues for Sustainability Sustainable Energy Finance Project Please note: for further details on all modules, visit or The programme incorporates a high level of input from senior executives from the IFSC. Students complete a practical project in the area of sustainable energy finance, directly related to their current role, where appropriate. The integration of high quality academic rigour and practical industry application is a unique feature of the learning approach, allowing both the individual student and host companies to benefit from the programme. Steve Falci, Head of Strategy Development in Sustainable Investments, Kleinwort Benson Investors Progression from the Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Energy Finance Participants who complete the Graduate Certificate and later wish to undertake the MSc in Sustainable Energy Finance will be required to complete the following two requisite modules in the first year of the MSc before entry into the second year, (i) Management for Sustainability and (ii) Finance and Derivatives. In the second year, participants will complete five modules and a dissertation. They will be exempt from the Legal Issues for Sustainability module. 3

5 The Classroom learning Experience The Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Energy Finance is delivered in the new purpose-built executive education facility housed in DCU Business School. This facility has been customised to meet the needs of post experience students. It is bright and spacious with classrooms that facilitate maximum participation and class interaction. Within DCU Business School, students have access to small study rooms for group assignments and for collaborative study; computer rooms; a coffee shop and restaurant; a large open space that facilitates networking and social interaction; and full wireless internet access. Support Services The Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Energy Finance is a significant commitment for part-time students. During the programme, students will be supported by the administrative team in DCU s Centre for Executive Programmes. This team is very experienced in dealing with the needs of executives who are working full-time and undertaking their programmes on a part-time basis. Green IFSC The Green IFSC initiative is an integral part of Ireland s response to the challenges of climate change and sustainable development, where finance, trade, products and services are developed and exchanged in support of the global transition to a low-carbon economy. 6 Entry Requirements Applicants should hold a minimum of a second class honours, grade two primary degree (Level 8) in a cognate discipline or equivalent professional qualification. Consideration will be given to applicants on the basis of their work experience (with a minimum requirement of three years relevant experience) and/or other relevant professional and/or educational achievements. Fees and Grant Aid The fee for the Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Energy Finance is 4,500 and is payable in a number of instalments. Eligible organisations can also avail of grant-aid for fees through the Summit Finuas Network, reducing the cost of the programme to 2,800. A small number of places, which are 100% funded by the Summit Finuas Network, will be available to job-seekers. This course includes the key elements required to gain a comprehensive understanding of green finance. Because it is expert practitioner led, students are assured of exposure to the latest trends, thinking and techniques in what is a very dynamic subject area. Paul J.
