We have a strong team of staff, volunteers, and student interns working with over 1500 patients per year. We have made major inroads with insurance companies, winning more than 80% of the insurance appeals we file. When insurance coverage fails, the organization will try other channels to get patients the care they require. An appointment is necessary in order to see a staff attorney except in cases of emergencies such as Marshal eviction notices, restrain of bank accounts, or emergency placement of a child. 30 Ali Forney Center Main Office: 224 West 35 th Street, Suite 1102 New York, NY (212) AFC is the nation's largest and most comprehensive organization dedicated to homeless LGBT youth. Our goal is to provide homeless LGBT youths, aged 16-24, with the support and services they need to escape the streets and begin to live healthy and independent lives. We offer an innovative continuum of services. Legal areas Housing Variety of Additional Support Services Services Ali Forney Day Center: The AFC Day Center in the Chelsea section of Manhattan is the entry point to our programs for homeless youths. There we offer street outreach, case management, primary medical care, HIV testing, mental health assessment and treatment, food and showers, an employment assistance program, and referral to our housing programs. 527 West 22nd Street, 1 st Floor New York, NY (212) AFC Emergency Housing Program: AFC offers a scattered-site emergency housing program with sites in Manhattan and Brooklyn. We offer temporary housing in safe, staff-supervised homelike apartments. LGBT youths are able to reside in our emergency housing program for up to six months while we assist them in moving on to more permanent housing. Currently AFC has 5 emergency housing apartments and a total of 30 beds. AFC Transitional Housing: The Transitional Housing Program currently offers housing to 20 youths in 4 scattered sites in Brooklyn and Manhattan. The residents are able to live in our transitional housing program for up to two years, while we assist them in maintaining employment and in continuing their education. We place a great deal of emphasis in helping our residents become prepared to live independently, and our goal is that our residents, upon graduation from this program, will move on to their own apartments. 31 American-Italian Coalition of Organizations, Inc. (AMICO) 138 Bay 20 th Street Brooklyn, New York (718) In 1982, AMICO applied for and received a contract to provide case assistance and information services in the Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Red Hook, Gowanus, Sunset Park, Windsor Terrace, Bensonhurst, Bath Beach, Borough Park, Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Fort Hamilton, Gravesend, Brighton Beach and Coney Island sections of Brooklyn. The AMICO Extended Services Program is one of 38 citywide programs that have been designated to assist individuals with the Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan. This assistance is available at both Bensonhurst & Carroll Gardens offices. AMICO caseworkers are deputized to assist with the Medicare Savings Program. AMICO is a non-sectarian organization that provides services free of charge to residents of New York City without regard to national origin, citizenship status, economic status, race, creed, religion, gender, sexual orientation or marital status. 32 Arab American Association of New York 7111 Fifth Avenue Brooklyn, NY (718) Our goal is to provide support for individuals and families to learn about and gain access to various public benefits and services that will assist new immigrants in navigating a new society and creating more stable families. Services are offered daily during our regular business hours, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. They are always free unless otherwise denoted. Our client base is generally from low-income families, and over 70% of those we serve are women or children. We serve the greater New York City community, with a focus on Arab immigrants living in Brooklyn. Recent estimates by the Arab American Institute put the population of recent Arab immigrants in New York State at over 405,000 individuals, including over 117,000 in Brooklyn alone. We are located in the Bay Ridge area - directly at the heart of this community. Services are available in English, Arabic, Spanish, French and Somali. Individuals and families receive advice and assistance on issues related to immigration, including citizenship, green card and visa applications, and authorization for securing employment. Clients may also receive advice and counsel on landlord-tenant disputes and access to public benefits. The program s staff members guide clients through the legal system and offer support services such as translation, interpretation, and attending proceedings with clients in court and other government offices. In the interest of outreach to both the community and to colleagues in law enforcement, the courts, and the legal profession, the Legal Services Program develops workshops with other advocates who work to protect the legal rights of immigrants. Atlas is an NGO open part time and operating in Brooklyn, NY. Offering legal, mental health, career, educational and life skills services, Atlas provides for the most vulnerable of NY s youth populations: immigrants. By utilizing a cooperative approach, members of Atlas sit on our board, take part in all decision-making processes, and are both the benefactors and beneficiaries of services offered at the center. You can file a complaint regardless of your age. You do not need to speak English; the CCRB is equipped to accept complaints in any language. You can file a complaint if you are currently incarcerated. You should come forward with your complaint as soon as possible. Officers who are subjects of substantiated CCRB investigations must be disciplined or served with disciplinary charges within 18 months of the date of the incident. The only exception to the statute of limitations occurs when the alleged misconduct committed by the officer constitutes a crime. The CCRB investigates complaints of excessive or unnecessary use of force, abuse of authority, discourtesy, and offensive language. The CCRB refers complaints about corruption or neglect of duty to the New York City Police Department.
