By the end of this chapter you will understand : Windows Security Windows fire wall Open a port in windows firewall Turn off or on windows firewall Inbound traffic Outbound traffic 2
Windows Seven Security Windows 7 improved security technologies. Exist threads are as follows: o Viruses o Worms o Trojan horses These threads can spread from computer to computer unwanted software spread via these Users can install an application, unaware of the undesired functionality of the program or of a program that is bundled with the application. 3
Windows Firewall A firewall is a software or hardware-based network security system that controls the incoming and outgoing network traffic by analyzing the data packets and determining whether they should be allowed through or not, based on a rule set. Many personal computer operating systems include softwarefirewalls to protect against threats from the public Internet. 4
Continue 5
Continue Windows 7 has an enhanced version of the Windows Firewall that was first included in Windows XP SP2. The Windows 7 provides local protection from network attacks that might pass through your network or originate inside your organization. It also provides computer-to-computer connection security that allows you to require authentication and data protection for all communications. 6
continue When you add a program to the list of allowed programs in a firewall, or when you open a firewall port, you allow a particular program to send information to or from your computer through the firewall. Allowing a program to communicate through a firewall (sometimes called unblocking) is like punching a hole in the firewall. Each time you open a port or allow a program to communicate through a firewall, your computer becomes a bit less secure. The more allowed programs or open ports your firewall has, the more opportunities there are for hackers or malicious software to use one of those openings to spread a worm, access your files, or use your computer to spread malicious software to others. 7
Open a port in Windows Firewall If Windows Firewall is blocking a program and you want to allow that program to communicate through the firewall, you can usually do that by selecting the program in the list of allowed programs in Windows Firewall. It's generally safer to add a program to the list of allowed programs than to open a port. If you open a port, it stays open until you close it, whether or not a program is using it. If you add a program to the list of allowed programs, the "hole" is open only when needed for a particular communication. 8
Continue Open Windows Firewall by clicking the Start button then clicking Control Panel. type firewall, and then click Windows Firewall. In the left pane, click Advanced settings. click New Rule. Follow the instructions in the New Inbound Rule wizard. If you re having trouble allowing other computers to communicate with your computer through Windows Firewall, you can try using the Incoming Connections troubleshooter to automatically find and fix some common problems. Open the Incoming Connections troubleshooter. In the search box, type troubleshooter. Click View all, and then click Incoming Connections. 9
Continue there is a option for Windows Firewall to be on or off with o o Private networks Public networks. If you have Inactive showing on a network location, this means that you do not have a network connection for that type of network location. Active means that you do. 10
Continue 11
Turn Off Windows Firewall Select Turn off Windows Firewall. Click on Yes. 12
Inbound Traffic If a program wants to receive incoming connections from the Internet, the Windows firewall will block incoming connections and ask you whether you want to allow them. 13
Continue.. To control the programs that are allowed to access the Internet, click the Allow a program or feature through Windows Firewall link at the left side of the window. 14
Outbound Traffic The Windows 7 firewall allows all programs to establish outgoing connections to the Internet with no user confirmation. Third-party firewalls, such as Comodo, can also prompt you when a program wants to access the Internet. Some firewalls even have databases of known safe applications, which they can automatically allow. 15
Continue you can actually control outbound traffic in the Windows 7 firewall,. click the Advanced Settings 16
Continue In the Advanced Settings window, select Outbound Rules and click the New Rule link. 17
Continue specify a specific program s.exe file and select the Block this connection option. 18
