1 ST VINCENT HOSPITAL INDIANAPOLIS PODIATRY STUDENT CLERKSHIP MANUAL
2 St. Vincent Hospital Indianapolis Christopher Winters, DPM Residency Director Shelly Bowers, DPM Clerkship Director 2001 West 86 th Street Indianapolis, IN Phone (317) Dear Student Doctor, We would like to take this time to give our deepest congratulations and warmest welcome for being selected to the clerkship program at St.Vincent Hospital Indianapolis. The Podiatric Clerkship program at Saint Vincent is an integral part of the medical education program that includes the podiatric medicine and surgery residency. The normal rotation is four weeks. In the event of a 5-week rotation month, you will not be required to stay. We encourage you to utilize that 5 th week to study or travel and visit other programs. You will find that your month here will be challenging and that you will have a diverse opportunity to directly participate in medical and surgical care of our patients under the direct supervision of the podiatric residents and podiatric attending physicians. We understand the hard work and dedication you have put into your education thus far and hope to continue to guide you on your path into residency. This manual is designed to give you the most up-to-date information about your program goals, hospital and practice locations, hospital protocols and clerkship protocols. It is important that you read the manual and become familiar with these protocols before you start your clerkship. Included in this manual are the following: 1. Program Overview, Clerkship rules and responsibilities 2. Medical Information Resources 3. List of Clerkship Teaching Faculty 4. Directions/Map/Parking 5. Other Important Information Our program coordinator, Darlenia Thomas, will contact you within 2 months prior to the start of your clerkship as will the student coordinator, Beth Dragoo. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Darlenia at dfthomas@stvincent.org or Beth at bvdragoo@stvincent.org. We wish you the best of luck with your clerkship month! Sincerely, Christopher L. Winters, DPM Shelly F. Bowers, DPM
3 1) PROGRAM OVERVIEW/ INSTRUCTIONS Required materials: white lab coat, bandage scissors, nail nippers, pen with note pad, and pen light. During your rotation the podiatry residents will assign you to a variety of both clinics and surgical cases. You are expected to arrive 30 minutes prior to every surgical case to which you are assigned. During this time you will have ample opportunity to evaluate the patient preoperatively, perform the appropriate history and physical, and familiarize yourself with the case. There are a number of locations for clinics as well as hospitals that you may be assigned. We have attached the addresses of the hospitals, surgery centers and clinics you may visit during the rotation. If you do not have a GPS system, we recommend you map and print these locations prior to arriving. It is not acceptable to be late to assignments because of lack of preparation. Your clerkship rotation will begin in accordance with the AACPM National Clerkship Calendar (included with this manual). On the first day of your clerkship, you will meet in the Graduate Medical Education (Med Ed) office located on the 1st floor promptly at The hospital is located at 2001 W. 86 th Street, sandwiched between Naab Road on the West and Harcourt Road on the East. Turn in on either Harcourt or Naab and park in the NE hospital parking lot in the spaces marked for associates (white lined spaces).
