Classes AT A GLANCE LAEF s Course Descriptions: Career Exploration: SUMMER 2016 This course is designed to expose students to a wide array of options in different, yet intriguing careers. Everyday students will be exposed to a new and different career path. They have a no choice but to be motivated and inspired by the four professionals! The 10 careers that will be covered during the 10 days are Health Fitness, Sports Medicine, Respiratory Therapy, Medical Assisting Skills, Pathology, Criminal and Civil Law, Forensics, EMT, Paramedics and Firefighting. Ceramics (For Credit): This class is designed to fulfill part 1 or 2 of the Fine Art section for the A through G requirements for transfering to a UC or Cal State school. Students earn 5 units of high school elective credit as they investigate a variety of hand building and wheel throwing pottery techniques. Functional and aesthetics based projects will be created using electric, high fire gas and alternative firing methods not offered during the regular school year. Competitive Improv: In this class, students will learn the basic techniques of improv comedy. Basic performing techniques as well as keys of improv will be taught. Students will participate in improv games that will assist them in thinking on their feet. Driver s Education: This in-class teen Driver's Education program is approved by the DMV to comply with California requirements to earn an instructional permit. *This class does not cover behind-the-wheel training. Health For-Credit On Campus: **See HSFC Registration Form** This course covers the major issues in physical, mental and social health for adolescents. It satisfies the Health requirement for a high school diploma. Topics covered include nutrition and exercise, mental and emotional health, safe and healthy relationships, growth and development, sexual health, substance abuse issues, and injury prevention. Health (Online)- For Credit: **Mandatory Orientation June 12 or June 15 at 9am or 1pm** Summer Online Health is an internet-based survey course covering the major issues in physical, mental and social health for adolescents. It satisfies the Health requirement for a high school diploma. Topics covered include nutrition and exercise, mental and emotional health, safe and healthy relationships, growth and development, sexual health, substance abuse issues, and injury prevention. The course comprises a text, video presentations, news articles and scientific studies, interactive discussion groups and special projects to demonstrate learning. The course can be completed on an accelerated schedule of three weeks with an on-campus final exam, or on the regular five-week schedule with an oncampus final exam. Government (Online)- For Credit: **Mandatory Orientation June 17 at 1pm** American Political Tradition is a one-semester required course that covers the California Content Standards in American Government. As such, it covers features of our United States political systems- national, state, and local. The intent has been to provide a course that is conceptual and interdisciplinary in approach. While emphasizing political science, it includes insights from psychology, anthropology, sociology, history, and economics. Preparing for the College Essay: This is an ideal course for students who will be applying to colleges and universities. This 2-week course will guide students to writing an effective college essay. Students will gain tips, be guided through revisions and have a polished essay ready to submit to colleges. All students will receive a book titled, Conquering the College Admissions Essay in 10 Steps by Alan Gelb. 3
4 THE LOREM IPSUMS High School For Credit and H.S. Classes SUMMER AT A GLANCE 2016 Meet our highly qualified H.S. Teachers! David Barker (Competitive Improv)- David has a Bachelor s Degree in Mathematics from CSULB and a Masters in Educational Administration from CSULB. He is currently the math Department chair and Los Al Live Improv Advisor. He has been running the competitive improv team for the past 5 years and has been a teacher for twenty years. Jeff Carthew (Ceramics- for Credit)- Jeff has completed his education locally with a B.A. in Art Education through Cal State University Long Beach. After completing his teacher credential program, he student taught at Los Alamitos High School for ceramics and threedimensional design. Since that time he has taught ceramic GATE classes through Cypress School District, ceramics and AP studio art for OCHSA, drawing/painting/ AP studio art at Loara High School, and three-dimensional design and ceramics at Los Alamitos High School. Jeff is currently the Head of the Visual Arts Department for Los Alamitos High School and teaches beginning through advanced ceramics for 9 th through 12 th grade. Jeff Heeren (Online Government)- Mr. Heeren has been teaching social studies at Los Alamitos High School for almost a decade, and helped to pioneer the on-line government course. Before teaching at LAHS, he earned a BA in History from Whitman College, and an MA in History from the University of California, Irvine. He earned his teaching credential from CSULB, and when not teaching high school, Mr. Heeren is an instructor at Cerritos College. Nathan Howard (Health- for Credit)- Nathan currently teaches Spanish and is the Head Coach for Track and Field at Los Al High. Nathan has taught health for 5 summers and one semester at the high school and he is very excited to teach LAEF s for Credit Health Class. Nathan received a BA in Spanish Education and a minor in physical education/coaching from BYU. He earned his master s degree in athletic administration and coaching from Concordia University. Nathan has been the LAHS Track and Field head coach for the last 15 years. NOCROP Instructors (Career Exploration)- Seana Brief - She is teaching the career paths of Criminal & Civil Law and Forensics. Lupe Rodriguez - Lupe will be teaching the career paths of Medical Assisting Skills and Pathology. Scott Semer - Scott will be teaching the career paths of Firefighting, EMT and Paramedics. Courtney Shaw - Courtney will be teaching the career paths of Health Fitness, Sports Medicine and Respiratory Therapy. Bob Ostmann (Online Health)- Robert Ostmann has been a Los Alamitos teacher for 24 years. He has taught elementary school and in high school a variety of subjects including health, biology, English, applied science and video production. Ostmann came to teaching from journalism where he worked as a reporter and editor for newspapers in Detroit, Minneapolis and Orange County. He is the author of a book, Acid Rain: A Plague Upon the Waters. Arnold Weintraub (Preparing for the College Essay)- Dr. Weintraub has been teaching since He received his BA degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a double major in English and Speech Communication. He received his MA and PHD degrees in Speech Communication from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. He taught English at every level, ranging from remedial through AP Honors. He coached Debate for 11 years at Omaha Central High School. He has also taught several courses in Speech Communication at El Camino College and Golden West College. Dr. Weintraub is an enthusiastic teacher and served as a walk-on coach at Los Alamitos High School, coaching the Debate team and the Mock Trial team. 4

Classes AT A GLANCE THE LOREM IPSUMS SUMMER 2016 Additional Information about High School Classes and For Credit Classes: Session One: June 29- July 10 (No Classes: 7/3) Session Two: July 13- July 24 HSFC: June 17-July 21 (No Classes: 7/3) Both sessions of High School Summer classes and High School For Credit Classes will be at Los Alamitos High School located at: 3591 Cerritos Ave., Los Alamitos, CA Registration: All registration will be completed on-line. Registration will be on a first come, first served basis. A minimum enrollment of 8 students is required to be able to run classes. Please visit to register for SEI classes. * Early Bird Registration: 3/20-5/26 (Don t miss out on the best deal!) *Regular registration: Session 1; 5/27-6/23 and Session 2; 5/27-7/7 *Late In-Person registration: Session 1- June 29 th and Session 2- July 13 th **Please note there will be a $25 late fee per class.** Register early! Summer class sizes are limited to 17 students per class. See the bottom of page #2 for HSFC registration information. Behavior Expectations: It is the goal of the Los Alamitos Education Foundation (LAEF) to provide a positive, safe, and secure learning environment for all students. To ensure that all students have equal access to success and a sense of well-being during the LAEF Summer Enrichment Institute, we expect that students behave appropriately. Participating in SEI is a privilege and if a student has to be removed from a SEI classroom on more than one occasion, the course fee will be forfeited and the child will no longer be able to participate in 2015 SEI courses. Refund Policy: Tuition is non-refundable unless LAEF cancels the class due to the minimum enrollment not being met. If your child registers late, misses classes, or withdraws before the end of the session, you are still responsible for the full fees of the session. Refunds/Cancelations for FOR CREDIT classes: Only the parent or guardian may request a refund. A $25.00 fee will be charged for each refund granted. NO Refunds after June 18, Scholarships: Limited partial scholarships are available on a first come, first served basis.
