1 IxNetwork TM MPLS-TP Emulation Test the Functionality, Performance, and Scalability of an MPLS-TP Ingress, Egress, or Transit Node MPLS has come a long way since its original goal to allow core routers to switch packets faster using a simplified header. MPLS is now a foundation of IP-based networks providing value added services such as traffic engineering and VPN services. The success and familiarity of MPLS in the core is driving service providers to deploy MPLS beyond the core of the network into access, aggregation and backhaul networks supporting broadband, business and mobility services. The expansion of MPLS toward the edge also exposes some of the weakness of MPLS as a transport technology. MPLS-TP adapts MPLS to be more "transport like". The fundamentals of this new technology is to extend current MPLS with Operation, Administration and Maintenance (OAM) tools that are well known with traditional transport technologies such as SONET/SDH. Moreover, to inherit reliability and operational simplicity from SONET/SDH networks, MPLS-TP as a transport technology is connection oriented and works as point-to-point circuits with Automatic Protection Switching (APS). Both static provisioning and dynamic signaling of working and protect paths will be supported. Traffic Source Ingress PE Working Key Features Supports testing of DUT in various functional roles (Ingress, Egress, or Transit) with a comprehensive protocol wizard Allows static configuration of both working and protecting LSP and PW, and a mix of both Support protection switching either on LSP or PW. When on PW, nested protection logic applies. Supports CC only mode with Channel Type 0x07 (older implementation) or CC and Proactive CV with Channel Type 0x22 and 0x23 Supports G-Ach and GAL encapsulation for embedded control protocols such as Y.1731, BFD CC and CV, LSP Ping, LSP Traceroute, Alarm propagation and Loss and Delay Measurement functions Supports MPLS-TP Fault Management - Alarms supported in both Y.1731 format for AIS, RDI, LCK and in IETF format using BFD for RDI and a separate channel for AIS,LDI, LCK Ping and Traceroute supported either via IETF LSP Ping, Traceroute which includes the DDMAP/DSMAP TLV or Y.1731 formats Protecting Figure 1: Ixia ports emulate both traffic source and Egress nodes to test DUT as Ingress Node Agoura Road Calabasas, CA USA Tel Document No.: Rev B November Page 1

2 Figure 2: MPLS-TP OAM GUI In the test setup shown in figure 1, the DUT is the ingress PE for MPLS-TP working and protecting paths. IxNetwork emulates traffic source nodes and the MPLS-TP egress nodes. OAM CC and CV functions run on both DUT and the emulated PE nodes to monitor path condition, and should a failure occur, the traffic will be switched from the working path to the protecting path automatically. The switchover time can be measured based on traffic loss. The setup scales to many thousands of MPLS-TP tunnels for scalability tests. Similarly, the setup can be extended to test DUT in other roles, such as Transit or Egress node. IxNetwork emulated nodes will surround the DUT and complete the end to end test topology. Also supports Revertive functionality in APS. Supports traffic configuration over working/protecting path and measure the switchover time when fail-over occurs Supports real-time dynamic label changes from working path to protect path when failure occurs as this is critical to measure DUT sub-50ms switchover time Supports IETF PW status propagation User triggered actions include: LSP Ping, Traceroute, Alarms set/reset, PW Status, LM, DM, Manual APS Time based periodic actions include: LSP Ping, LM, DM Page 2
