Page 1 of 6 University of Alberta and the University of Colorado Joint LL.B./JD Program A. Overview The University of Colorado Law School ( Colorado ) and the University of Alberta Faculty of Law ( Alberta ) shall be delivering a dual degree program, commencing in September 2008 (the Dual Degree Program ). Students who successfully complete the program shall receive a JD degree from Colorado and an LLB degree from Alberta. [NOTE: The name of the Alberta degree may be changed to JD by This name-change will have no impact on the program or on graduates qualifications.] The Dual Degree Program involves four years of full-time study. Two years (consecutive) are spent at Colorado and Alberta. Students may begin the program at either law school. Students must complete the compulsory course requirements for each program, subject to any exemptions granted by the relevant Dean. Optional courses must be formally approved by program authorities to count for credit toward both programs. To earn both degrees, students must complete [120] credit hours of course work, or the equivalent of forty 3-credit courses. This will involve the equivalent of eight terms with a normal load of five courses per term. For students commencing the program in Alberta, Colorado will recognize for its JD program up to [30] credits for Alberta courses successfully completed. This will leave approximately 60 credit hours of course work to be completed at Colorado. For students commencing the program in Colorado, Alberta will recognize for its LLB program up to [32] credits for Colorado courses successfully completed. This will leave approximately 60 credit hours of course work to be completed at Alberta. B. Eligibility Admission to the program is open to the following students: (a) students applying for admission to Colorado or Alberta; (b) students who have been admitted to Colorado or Alberta and are in the first year program at either law school. C. Application Procedure The application procedure has two components: (1) Students must complete all of the application procedures and pay all requisite fees for students applying to the law degree programs at both Colorado and Alberta. That is, students must apply to and be admitted by BOTH law schools to participate in the Dual Degree Program. (2) Students must complete and submit the Election to Participate in the Dual Degree Program form. This form must be submitted along with other application documents to each law school.
Page 2 of 6 That is, students must apply to and be admitted by BOTH law schools to participate in the Dual Degree Program. There are no special application procedures for the Dual Degree Program other than the submission of the Election to Participate form, besides the application procedures that apply to all applicants to either law school. Students who have been admitted to either Colorado or Alberta (current first year students) are required to apply only to the law school to which they have not been admitted. They must complete and submit the Election to Participate in the Dual Degree Program form to both law schools. Students applying to enter the Dual Degree Program do not have any privileged admissions status. They must meet the applicable admissions standards for each law degree program, and must be granted offers of admission through the ordinary admission processes by the ordinary admissions authorities. D. Deadlines Students applying for admission to both Colorado and Alberta must comply with the admissions deadlines set by each institution. The Election to Participate in the Dual Degree Program form must be submitted with other admissions material. For information concerning the Colorado admissions procedure and deadlines, see: For information concerning the Alberta admissions procedure and deadlines, see: E. Election of Starting Location Students will be advised whether they have been accepted into the Dual Degree Program. Students who have not yet commenced first year studies at either law school may elect to commence studies at either Colorado or Alberta. Students must advise the designated individual at both law schools of this election by the date specified in the notice of admission to the Dual Degree Program. Students who have commenced first year studies at either law school must continue their programs at that law school, until second year studies are completed. F. Program Residence Dual Degree students are required to take their first two years exclusively and continuously at either Colorado or Alberta, and their second two years exclusively and continuously at the other law school. Length of Program Students must complete the entire course of study within 5 years of enrolling in the Dual Degree Program, unless, because of extraordinary circumstances, an extension is granted.
Page 3 of 6 Requirements for Each Degree A total of 89 credit hours is required for the JD degree from Colorado. A total of 92 credit hours is required for the LLB degree from Alberta. Students must complete the following Colorado requirements: the entire First Year Curriculum (Contracts, Civil Procedure I and II, Property I and II, Torts, Legal Writing, Appellate Advocacy, Constitutional Law and Criminal Law), Evidence, Legal Ethics, at least one seminar, and satisfy a Practice Course Requirement and Professionalism. Students must complete the following Alberta requirements: the entire First Year Curriculum (Contracts, Torts, Criminal, Property, Constitutional Law, Legal Research and Writing, Foundations), Civil Procedure, Evidence, Professional Responsibility, Administrative Law, Corporations, Conflicts of Law, and either Jurisprudence or Legal History; they must also complete the written work requirement. The Dean of either law school may waive specific requirements if it is determined that students have completed the equivalent of those requirements at the other law school. Only courses that have been specially designated by Colorado and Alberta may be taken for credit for Dual Degree Program purposes. A list of designated courses shall be published. Colorado shall grant credit towards the JD degree for up to [30] credit hours for successfully completed designated courses at Alberta. Alberta shall grant credit toward the LLB degree for up to [32] credit hours for successfully completed designated courses at Colorado. Minimum Grade Level for Credit Recognition For an Alberta course to be credited toward completion of the Colorado JD program, a student must have achieved a grade of at least C in the course. For a Colorado course to be credited toward completion of the Alberta LLB program, a student must have achieved a grade of at least C in the course. Academic Evaluation Each law school shall be governed by its own laws, policies and procedures governing the award of grades and degrees and the determination of academic deficiencies. Courses taken at Colorado shall be governed by the academic evaluation rules applicable in Colorado. Courses taken at Alberta shall be governed by the academic evaluation rules applicable in Alberta. Recognition and Grade Point Averages Colorado shall grant credit for Alberta courses on a pass basis. Alberta courses grades shall not be counted in the computation of class rank or in the computation of the cumulative 72 grade point average graduation requirement for the JD degree. Alberta shall grant credit for Colorado courses on a pass basis. Alberta courses grades shall not be counted in the computation of students grade point averages. G. Course Load Requirements
Page 4 of 6 A student in the Degree Program shall be required to inform each law school each term of all courses being taken. No student in the Dual Degree Program may take fewer than 10 credit hours or more than 15 credit hours during any term without consent. Registration in fewer than 10 credit hours in a term may result in the student being terminated from the Dual Degree Program. H. Student Status A student who has elected the Dual Degree program and who has been admitted by both schools shall be deemed to be enrolled in each law school unless the student's enrollment status in the Double Degree program is terminated. A student in the Dual Degree Program shall be entitled to the privileges of an enrolled student at each school consistent with his or her status as a participant in the Dual Degree Program, whether or not the student is at that time taking courses at that school. While the student is taking any courses at the Colorado, privileges include: access to the Colorado Law School library on the same basis as other law students, including check-out privileges and carrel assignment privileges; student locker privileges; student notice box privileges; access to support from all Offices of Career Services, including Student Affairs, Office of International Education, and Office of the Registrar, membership in the Student Bar Association and in other student organizations for which the student is qualified for membership; access to the student bookstore, lounge and other student facilities of the school; and access to parking in the Colorado Law School preference lots on the same basis as other law students. Whether or not the student is taking courses at the Colorado during any particular term, the student has the same right to course sign-ups, preferences and lotteries for the next term as if the student were taking courses at Colorado as a full time law student; provided, however, that the student shall be responsible for contacting the Registrar or observing Colorado administrative bulletin boards for notices concerning such course and registration information. While the student is taking any courses at Alberta, privileges include: access to the Alberta Law School library on the same basis as other law students; student locker privileges; membership in the Law Students Association and in other student organizations for which the student is qualified for membership; access to the Common Room and other student facilities of the school; and access to parking on the University of Alberta campus on the same basis as other law students. Whether or not the student is taking courses at Alberta during any particular term, the student has the same right to course registration participation as if the student were taking courses at Alberta as a full time law student; provided, however, that the student shall be responsible for contacting the Admissions Coordinator, observing Alberta Law School electronic bulletin boards, and reviewing messages to the student's University of Alberta account for notices concerning course and registration information. I. Fees While Attending Courses in Colorado Dual Degree Program students who are attending Colorado must pay to Colorado full tuition and other mandatory and required fees established for Colorado students for the periods that they are attending Colorado Law School. These fees include Instruction,
Page 5 of 6 Registration and Transcript, Student Services, Athletics and Recreation, Health Services, and Student's Union fees. Dual Degree Program students attending Colorado must purchase the medical/health insurance as required by Colorado. Medical and health costs not covered by insurance must be paid by the student. For information concerning Colorado fees, see: While Attending Courses in Alberta Dual Degree Program students who are attending Alberta must pay to the University of Alberta full tuition and other mandatory and required fees established for students of Alberta for the periods that they are attending Alberta. These fees include Instruction, Registration and Transcript, Student Services, Athletics and Recreation, Health Services, and Student's Union fees. All students attending the University of Alberta for less than 12 months who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents and who therefore do not have Alberta Health Care Insurance are required to participate in the University of Alberta Health Insurance Program and to pay the required premiums to the University of Alberta for this health insurance. For information concerning Alberta fees, see Responsibility for Expenses All expenses incurred by students in the Dual Degree Program shall be borne by them, including but not limited to charges for tuition and required fees, non-required fees, health insurance and medical expenses, housing accommodations, food, round trip transportation, in-country travel, books and supplies, vacation and other personal expenses. J. Housing Each institution shall provide information to assist students from the other university to obtain housing by allowing students full access to the resources made available to all other students at each respective law school. The cost and responsibility for securing such housing shall be the student's. K. Financial Assistance At this point, no specialized financial assistance is available. Check the Alberta and Colorado Prizes and Awards websites for possible funding mechanisms. L. Codes of Conduct and Discipline In matters involving academic ethics each law school shall have jurisdiction to determine under its own procedures whether misconduct has occurred, and the consequences thereof, with respect to credit to be given towards the degree offered by that school and the standing of the student at that school. However, if a student is expelled, suspended, or placed on academic probation or is otherwise not continued in good standing at either of the schools, each school may determine whether or not the student shall be permitted to continue in the Dual Degree Program. Each school shall have the authority to discipline a student taking courses at the other school, should that student violate any law or regulation of each institution or be found by a court of law to have violated any law of the host country.
Page 6 of 6 Disciplinary sanctions may include expulsion. Dual Degree Program students shall be subject to the laws, regulations, policies and procedures applicable to each law school. M. Disclosure of Information To participate in the Dual Degree Program, each student must consent to the disclosure of the following information by one law school to the other: (a) Confirmation of admission; (b) Other information relating to admissions, for the purposes of coordinating admissions for students in this Program; (c) Whether a student has been expelled or suspended for academic or non-academic reasons, or is subject to disciplinary action, or if the student has been placed on probation or is otherwise not in good standing; (d) Whether the student is subject to disciplinary proceedings and the results of any such proceedings.
