1 INSTITUTE OF CLINICAL PHARMACY TEL: ext. 568 FAX: BRIEF INTRODUCTION Many departments and institutes have been established since 984, when National Cheng Kung University College of Medicine was founded. Due to the concern on over supply of pharmacy graduates, pharmacy school had never been considered during the planning of the College. When the affiliated Medical Center was started in 988, pharmaceutical service required not only the product delivery but also a patient-oriented process of drug therapy. However, no clinically oriented pharmacy program was available nationwide at that time, and all the pharmacy graduates were trained under traditional programs. Therefore, the faculty of the Department of Pharmacology advocated the implementation of a master program on clinical pharmacy, which led to the establishment of the Institute of Clinical Pharmacy in 99. Before its approval by the Ministry of Education, a consultative conference was held to integrate the comments and suggestions from academy of pharmaceutical sciences, health administrations, as well as pharmacy practitioners from hospitals. The first class of graduate students was admitted in August 993, and Professor Ming-Liang Lai was appointed as Founding Chair. Since 996, the programs in the Institute of Clinical Pharmacy were expanded to incorporate the pharmacokinetics division in addition to the clinical pharmacy division. A fellowship program, designed as one to two years of full-time training, was started in 00. The Institute of Biopharmaceutical Sciences was proposed in association with the Institute of Clinical Medicine, the Department of Biochemistry and the Department of Pharmacology, and the first Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) student will be admitted during academic year. Past & Present Chairperson: Lai, Ming-Liang (August 993-July 994) Huang, Jin-Ding (August 994-July 997) Lai, Ming-Liang (August 997-April 998) Lai, Ming-Derg (August 998-July 00) Tsai, Jui-Chen (August 00-present) 8-99
2 TEACHING OBJECTIVES The major goal of this Institute is to educate the pharmacy graduates into competent and contemporary practitioners, who share responsibility with other health care providers to promote health through the provision of pharmaceutical care. Our Institute has been involved actively in teaching and research on clinical pharmacy and pharmacokinetics. The program of clinical pharmacy is designed to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and an empathy and appreciation for the patient in a professional manner. Through clinical clerkship in collaboration with the National Cheng Kung Medical Center, students are able to apply all the knowledge and attitudes to refine their professional practice in a patient care setting. Moreover, the course of pharmacy administration and management offers the opportunities for students to apprehend the state-of-the-art health care system and pharmaceutical reimbursement from diverse perspectives. Upon completion of the program, students can cope with the complex problems in the delivery of comprehensive health care; possess both the knowledge and skill that enable them to function as experts in the clinical use of drugs; can apply pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences to the practical problems of drug therapy; and can function as easily accessible health care information providers and educators. In the pharmacokinetics program, students are trained to be basic pharmaceutical researchers, and have logistical thinking and problem-solving abilities through strengthening their knowledge in pharmacotherapy, physical pharmacy, biopharmaceutics, drug delivery systems, and clinical pharmacokinetics. Furthermore, they dedicate themselves to researches in pharmacokinetic mechanisms and principles of drug absorption and metabolism, and to promote pharmaceutical researches and quality of health care. They are high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), dissolution system, TDX for therapeutic drug monitoring, and UV scanner...etc. The College of Medicine also provides facilities for research in different areas, such as ultra-speed centrifuge, gamma scintillation counter, and beta scintillation counter. In addition to the rich collection of books and journals in the main library and the medical library, the Institute possesses different sources of drug information systems, including Lexi-Comp Online, Iowa Drug Information Service (IDIS). Word/data processing, printing, and presentation aids are available in the Institute. FUTURE DEVELOPMENT () To develop the models of pharmaceutical care among various settings. () To advance critical care pharmacy services. (3) To advance researches on drug utilization by using the data warehouse from the National Health Insurance, which will explore the quantity and quality of medical prescriptions. (4) To develop researches in pharmacoepidemiology, which will establish the domestic evidence on drug effectiveness and safety. (5) To promote the researches in the pharmacokinetic and biopharmaceutical mechanisms associated with pharmacotherapy, and application in the development of new drug delivery systems to improve clinical efficacy and safety. 8-0
