3 A Brief (very brief) History There are over 130+ Data Centres in UK Central Government No aggregation of application or infrastructure $25 Bn approximate ICT spend per annum. 90,000 servers within central government running at <10% utilisation Less than 10% of servers are fully virtualised. Phase 1 (2009) of the G-Cloud Programme focussed on Data Centre and proposed significant reduction. Phase 2 ( ) detailed the Cloud, Data Centre Consolidation and Application Store for Government Strategy. 3 Phase 2 identified potential G-Cloud savings up to 30% of annual costs.

4 Phase 2 G-Cloud Programme Engaged wider group of Civil Servants, Industry Volunteers, and Small consultant group total 100 staff. Produced detail reports in 8 Areas which were published in February G-Cloud Vision G-Cloud Commercial Strategy G-Cloud Strategic Outline Business Case G-Cloud Implementation Strategy G-Cloud Service Management, Organisational Structure and Governance G-Cloud Service Specification G-Cloud Technical Architecture G-Cloud Foundation Principles 4

5 At the end of Phase 2 of the G-Cloud Programme ICT has reached possibly the greatest inflection point in the previous 20 years, as the traditional independent silo approach for ICT is cast aside and is replaced by the pooled utility computing resources of the future Martin Bellamy 5

7 So Where is the Programme Today? Principles Confirmed in the March 2011 ICT Strategy Programme Re-energised Delivery moved out to Ministry of Justice, Foundation Delivery Partners on the cusp of realisation Updated Government Cloud Strategy published in Oct Expected saving in the region of 200m p.a. by 2015 Cloud Procurement Framework Launched Oct companies expressed interest. 7

11 The CloudStore The CloudStore is the first iteration of the Application Store for Government. Launched in February Created as the Shopfront to the successful Cloud Framework which closed in December Contains 1700 services, from just under 300 suppliers. All suppliers signed up to standard T & C s based upon the principles of utility. All prices exposed. Unique Visits: 20,167 Pageviews: 273,126 Returning Visitors: 26.07% Visitors originating from 96 countries First Purchase made by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. 11

12 The CloudStore - Version 2 Version 2 of the CloudStore is likely to be launched in the April/ May time frame. Will be created on Open Source More sophisticated navigation, separated backend and web front end and a comparison capability. The backend will drive the frame work procurement, not the other way around. Suppliers submission will go directly into the backend staging area and will then be published. Suppliers will be able to directly update content on the site. Moving towards a dynamic framework, but maintaining compliance with EU procurement law remains complex 12

13 The Roadmap to Public Sector Cloud Driving the Agenda G-Cloud Implementation team created. Cloud First becomes the Mantra Creating Cloud Friendly Commercials Government Procurement Service address commercial constructs approaching Dynamic Frameworks. Key generic frameworks to meet needs of IaaS, PaaS and SaaS and services. Information Assurance CESG produce wide ranging guidelines that enable SIRO s to approached shared virtualised platforms and full cloud deployments with a consistent approach. Multi-Impact level Virtualised clusters are approved. 13

14 The Roadmap to Cloud (2) Virtualization Public Sector Bodies fully implement virtualization within their existing environments, Deploying Multi-level security platforms Extending the life of existing infrastructure Creating a stepping stone to future hybrid cloud. Utility Compute Power Standardized cloud Test and Development environments, such as Vmware Foundry, Vcloud Partners, become the norm for IL1-3. Utility Applications 14 Public sector utility services become widely available: Huddle, Zimbra (both open source) within secure boundaries.
