2 Welcome from the Course Directors Harold A. Kaftan, M.D., FAAP Pediatrics is an ever-changing field requiring continual educational updates to best care for the pediatric population. The 2014 Chartrand Memorial Practical Pediatrics Conference involves updates in several areas of care including vaccines, autism, evaluation and treatment of concussions, and the implementation of the medical home in a clinical setting. Conference attendees will learn best practice approaches to pediatric care. Stephen A. Chartrand, M.D. Before passing away on April 18, 2001, Stephen A. Chartrand, M.D. was chair of the Department of Pediatrics, and professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Medical Microbiology at Creighton University School of Medicine. He was also director of the combined Division of Pediatric Infectious Disease at Creighton University and the University of Nebraska School of Medicine. Dr. Chartrand conducted groundbreaking work in the clinical evaluation of new antibiotics for otitis media; in vitro, experimental and clinical evaluation of antimicrobials; the epidemiology and therapy of infections caused by penicillinresistant Streptococcus pneumoniae; and the clinical safety and efficacy of various new vaccines. Chartrand was a person who runs, rather than walks; who creates, rather than criticizes; who digs for answers, rather than cursing the questions. He was a person with boundless energy, a fastidious work ethic, an unpretentious intellect, a ready wit and an undying enthusiasm for teaching others so they may teach still others. Dr. Chartrand s impact as a teacher, doctor and scholar will live on in the generations of pediatricians he trained and patients he treated. It is impossible to describe the impact of his loss to the community, but his legacy of advocacy for children will continue for many years. Purpose and Objectives Purpose: To provide attendees with a review of recent advances and new developments in the field of pediatrics. Objectives At the end of the program, the participant should be able to: Discuss current trends in parent requests to delay or refuse vaccines and the benefits of immunization in the prevention of disease, disability and death Discuss the symptomatology of autism and current assessment and evaluation methods for healthcare professionals in its diagnosis and management Recognize the signs, symptoms, and common misconceptions of pediatric concussion and the treatment and management for recovery Discuss current practice, local levels, and national recommendations regarding appropriate vitamin D intake in newborn infants and the role it plays in bone and immunity health Illustrate current research initiatives and projects in pediatrics Describe and discuss a family-centered medical home as a central resource for comprehensive and evidence-based quality care for a child s needs, including medical, behavior and social needs Discuss why the medical home model of health care delivery is optimum Outline an integrated plan and services based on child-specific guidelines and standards for providing palliative care for a child living with a life-threatening or terminal condition Schedule 7:00 a.m. Registration, Continental Breakfast, & Visit Exhibits 7:30 a.m. Welcome & Program Overview 8:00 a.m. Keynote: Immunization Update The Dangers of Vaccine Hesitancy and Refusal Joseph A.
