2 Printed Documentation These codes for the Principal Agricultural Activity classify farms by the type of activity they are engaged in to facilitate the administration of the Internal Revenue Code. These six-digit codes are based on the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). Select one of the following codes and enter the six-digit number on page 1, line B. Crop Production Oilseed and grain farming Vegetable and melon farming Fruit and tree nut farming Greenhouse, nursery, and floriculture production Other crop farming Animal Production Beef cattle ranching and farming Cattle feedlots Dairy cattle and milk production Hog and pig farming Poultry and egg production Sheep and goat farming Animal aquaculture Other animal production Forestry and Logging Forestry and logging (including forest nurseries and timber tracts) Codes for Principal Business Activity This list of principal business activities and their associated codes is designed to classify an enterprise by the type of activity in which it is engaged to facilitate the administration of the Internal Revenue Code. These principal business activity codes are based on the North American Industry Classification System. Using the list of activities and codes below, determine from which activity the company derives the largest percentage of its total receipts. Total receipts is defined as the sum of gross receipts or sales plus all other income. If the company purchases raw materials and supplies them to a subcontractor to produce the finished product, but retains title to the product, the company is considered a manufacturer and must use one of the manufacturing codes ( ). List first the largest in terms of gross unrelated income, then the next largest. Be sure to classify your unrelated activities, rather than your related activities. Amortize all such expenditures ratably over the 120-month period beginning with the month the building is placed in service. Organizational expenditures for a corporations (section 248) or partnership (section 709). Optional write-off of certain tax preferences over the period specified in section 59(e). Certain section 197 intangibles, which generally include the following: 1. Goodwill. 2. Going concern value. 3. Workforce in place. 4. Business books and records, operating systems, or any other information base. 5. A patent, copyright, formula, process, design, pattern, know-how, format, or similar item. 6. A customer-based intangible (e.g., composition of market or market share). 7. A supplier-based intangible. 8. A license, permit, or other right granted by a government unit. 9. A covenant not to compete entered into in connection with the acquisition of a business. 10. A franchise (including a sports franchise acquired after October 22, 2004)), trademark, or trade name. Section 197 intangibles must be amortized over 15 years starting with the month the intangible was acquired. Business start-up expenditures (section 195). To elect to amortize start-up expenditures, attach a statement to your income tax return containing: 1. A detailed description of the trade or business, 2. The month in which the active trade or business began (or was acquired), 3. The number of months in the amortization period you are selecting (cannot be less than 60), and 4. A description of each start-up expenditure incurred (whether or not paid). The statement must be filed by the due date, including extension, of your return for the year in which the active trade or business begins. If you timely filed that without making the election, you can still make the election on an amended return filed within 6 months of the due date, excluding extensions, of that return. Write "Filed pursuant to section " on the amended return and file it at the same place you filed the original return. See Regulations section for more details. Creative property costs incurred to acquire and develop screenplays, scripts, story outlines, motion picture production rights to books and plays, and other similar properties for purposes of potential future film development, production, and exploitation. SIC Codes These codes may be required on certain forms in the Miscellaneous package. 8
