1 Tutorial: How to share recorded videos on Moodle More and more courses are incorporating student videos as part of the course assignment. These videos range from short self-introduction to presentations. Because Moodle has limited file attachment capacity, the best way to share your video is to store it safely and privately on a cloud-based service, then sharing the link to the video with your class. This quick tutorial shows you how to do that. Overview of the process: Step 1: Record video and store it locally Use your computer's builtin camera Use your tablet device Use your smart phone Use digital camera or other recording devices Step 2: Publish it on YouTube Step 3: Share the video on Moodle Copy the video link and paste that on Moodle Step 1: Record video and store it locally There are too many different types of recording devices with their own ways of working. Some of you may be working with your computer s built-in camera for recording. Some may be using the tablet or smartphone to record the video. Some may even be using a digital camera or camcorder for the recording. Because it s realistically impossible to address each individual s recording environment, we highly recommend (and ask) that you do your individual research on how to record the video, and save that on your hard drive, unless you already know how to do this. Never estimate the power of a simple google search, or user s manual. If you ve misplaced your manual, you can also look it up online. Most of digital gadget manufacturers publish the user manual on their website, or you may even find the manual on the users online community. Whatever method you use, Step 1 is completely your responsibility. Before you publish it on YouTube, the recorded video must be stored somewhere on your hard drive.

2 If you want to save time doing all of the above research, one suggested way of completing step 1, especially if you re using a tablet or smartphone to do this, is: 1. Record the video 2. Send the video to yourself via 3. Open the on your computer, and download the attached video on your hard drive Step 2: Publish it on YouTube Once the recording file is on your hard drive, you re ready to publish it on YouTube. If you already have an existing Gmail account, you can use the credentials to log into YouTube (they re the same company). If not, you will need to create an account on YouTube and log in. After this ground work is done, let the uploading begin. 1. Go to the YouTube hompage ( and log in 2. Click the Upload button

3 3. Click the arrow icon and browse to the recording file that s stored on your hard drive 4. Once you select the recording file to upload, you will see a progress bar growing. While that s being done, use this drop-down menu and make sure that the video is UNLISTED. This option is the most secure and private sharing option. Public will make your video searchable to other YouTube users. Private will make the video only visible to you, but no one else. But selecting Unlisted, your video is not searchable on the YouTube site, but only those who you share the direct video link with will be able to see the video. While the uploading is being done, DO NOT close the internet browser. Otherwise you will need to start from scratch.

5 5. In the meantime, ignore these two messages. 6. When uploading is done, YouTube needs a few more minutes to Process the video. Only after this can you share the video link with others. So, wait for a few more minutes for the processing to be finished.

6 7. When processing is complete, click the video thumbnail that you like and click Done

7 Step 3: Share the video on Moodle 1. After you click Done as shown above, you will get a sharable link. Select the whole link and post that in the desired discussion forum on Moodle.

8 2. Go to your course Moodle site, and go to the desired discussion forum where video posting is assigned. Enter the title of your entry, and in the post area, right-click and paste the URL you ve copied in the earlier step. When done, click submit. If you need to revisit YouTube to look for your video(s) again in the future, log into YouTube, and click the Menu button, then click My channel This is the menu button
