1 Guide to ABE in Graduate Programs A Publication of Building Professional Development Partnerships for Adult Educators Project PRO-NET September 1999 Arthur Evans Renee Sherman Pelavin Research Institute Sponsored by: Division of Adult Education U.S. Department of Education Ronald Pugsley, Division Director Jim Parker, Project Officer

2 Introduction The Guide to ABE in Graduate Programs was designed by the Pelavin Research Institute of the American Institutes for Research under a contract with the Department of Education s Division of Adult Education and Literacy. It is a part of the Building Professional Development Partnerships for Adult Educators Project (PRO-NET). The Guide is designed to assist individuals interested in pursuing graduate study in Adult Basic Education (ABE) or a related field. The guide was created from a database PRI is constructing of ABE-related graduate programs and is essentially a snap-shot of ABE in graduate programs existing in the United States in The ABE graduate program database was developed with the cooperation of Adult Education professors throughout the United States and members of the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE). Information was also gathered from Peterson s Graduate Programs in Business, Education, Health, Information Studies, Law & Social Work, 1999, Thirty-Third Edition. Institutions in the guide are organized by state. Readers will notice that not all of the 50 states are represented. To this extent, the Guide is a work in progress and not an exhaustive list of all ABE related graduate programs in the United States. Additional institutions (or more detailed information on those institutions already listed) will be added as information is made available. To include your program in PRI s database, please send information to: Jim Parker U.S. Department of Education Division of Adult Education and Literacy 330 C Street S.W. Washington, D.C Tel: (202) Fax: (202) james_parker@ed.gov Many thanks to those individuals who submitted information for this guide.
